Thank you. I have a Polygroup Summer Waves pool with a chronic zero free chlorine issue. Problem solved by putting the hockey puck in the filter/strainer assembly. Genius. All levels are normal now
Just an FYI, pucks are typically what is called stabilized chlorine which will introduce cyanuric acid (CYA). The CYA level will continue to rise and if too high will cause your chlorine to be less effective. The only way to lower CYA is to drain some water and refill, so it is best to avoid.
My 900 gallon above ground pool reading ok total chlorine but free chlorine is white. Does this mean I need to add more chlorine to much chlorinemines ?
We are currently setting up our above ground pool....I'm wondering after initally shocking the pool, when can I add the chlorine tabs in the floater to the pool? Thanks!
You need to regularly check the free chlorine level of the pool, chlorine will get burned up by the sun so you'll also want to check stabilizer or CYA. Only add chlorine when it is needed. Also CYA in stabilized chlorine tablets hangs around in the pool after the chlorine is gone so if you use nothing but stabilized chlorine pucks over time your CYA level will get too high and will negate the overall effect of the chlorine as a sanitizer. Only real way to lower CYA is to drain and add new water so you really want to avoid that
For anyone wondering what to do if your chlorine levels are too high, I believe you just leave it exposed to the sun (no cover or heat blanket) as the sun will pull out chlorine at around 1ppm per hr if I'm not mistaken. Test later after a few hours of hot sun to see if it's gone done to 1-3ppm
I have a question about the beginning of pool treatment. We recently installed a 32’x16’x52” Intex (~ 15,000 gallons) and currently filling it. The filter and pump is a sand model and we would use chlorine for sanitizing. Now, Me just finding out from my wife that my son’s skin is very sensitive to chlorine, my wife and I decided to purchase a saltwater system. However the saltwater system will not be here for between 7-14 days. My question is about the water in the pool now. How can I keep it sanitized until I get my new filter and pump? Are there certain things I can put in it and not run a pump for a short time? Can I run the filter and pump and keep chlorine levels at maybe 1ppm (very low) and be ok? Will running the pool like this make it harder to switch to a saltwater system or is it ok? The pool has a lot of water in it now and I don’t want to waste and and start over. Lots of questions and I’m trying to figure it out so the family can have fun.

@@SwimUniversitythe Total is now 5 and free is 3 after shocking. What should we do to bring them in line. We also use the poolRx item in our DE filter. Help!
Jeremie Grund 3 PPM is the minimum chlorine level to prevent algae. You should aim for 5 PPM at 40 CYA. If you are using stabilized tablets your CYA will rise as will your chlorine demand so keep an eye on it.
My test strip for fci is at 10, i have a 500 gallon kid pool and I'm using a 3 inch chlorine tablet, any ideas? The sub doesn't hit it directly since it a uv canopy over it, any ideas
I have the 8 foot easy set and it’s about 600 gallon and I can tell you now a 3 inch puck is way too much. Break it in 4 chunks and use 1 per week in a floating dispenser is what I found easiest
My salt water pool levels are all good, according to the test strips, except chlorine. I just shocked my pool yesterday and the test is still reading zero. I checked the filter and the salt cell. Does anyone have any ideas of what’s going on?
It could be that your salt cell is bad. Get it checked out. If you super chlorinated the pool and it's all gone in one day, it may be that the pool is demanding a lot of chlorine because a lot of people are using it or you're heating it or just maybe because of warm weather. Hard to know without seeing all the details such as the size of the pool, condition of the water (TDS, cya) and how much you added
I have a salt water pool, the salt generator is very expensive and they only last 2-4 years on average. Do your research is what I recommend. I am considering switching my pool over to chlorine because of this.
My total chlorine is 10 but free chlorine is 5. I can't imagine adding more chlorine makes sense since the free chlorine is already super high, but Idk how else to get rid of the combined chlorine. What do I do next?
What when is my free chlorine level is higher than total chlorine? Free chlorine is around 4ppm and total chlorine is only 0.48ppm. I use Hayward salt chlorinator, vinyl pool, indoor, salt level 3.8, PH 7.3, CYA 4. Tested with PoolLab Test 1.0
Question : So I shocked my pool a few week's ago, and it appears that my FC level is still very low. Is the way to get that to come up is to add daily chlorine tab's?
I'm no expert on pool chemistry but i did have a similar experience in our saltwater pool. We opened our pool to find a green mess on our hands and shocked the pool back to clear water, however, my chlorine levels stayed low no matter what I did. It's called a chlorine lock and it happens for a few different reasons. The only way to break the lock is to over shock the pool by doubling (or more) the recommend shock dose for your pool.- Good luck!
Do you need to test for total chlorine in the pool or just free chlorine? because otherwise how can you determine if free is higher than CC, yet you only mention to test for FC... care to explain=?
Hi there - Many testing kits or testing strips will give you both Total and Free Chlorine readings. First, you want to make sure your Free Chlorine is between the recommended range of 1 - 3 PPM with 3 PPM being ideal. Then you can compare your Total and Free Chlorine levels. If they don't match up closely, there's Combined Chlorine in the water.
Thank you so much, I was writing a paper on water treatment process and couldn't understand what free chlorine meant. You guys saved my life!

Thankyou.

Total chlorine 3ppm

To raise free chlorine do I use chlorine or shock.?
How do U raise the free chlorine level?

I need some decently strong chlorine for killing yard moss. I would like say about 10%. How many gallons of 10% solution would a 3" tablet make?

My pool’s free chlorine (5) is always greater than the combined chlorine (2). Is that an issue? Do I need to add anything?
