- www.playbill.co... Winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play, Terrence NcNally's "Master Class" returns to Broadway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre starring
Tony winner Tyne Daly as the witty and caustic aging opera star Maria Callas, who is leading a master voice class for aspiring singers. With the affable Manny at the piano (Jeremy Cohen), Callas finds herself both impressed and disgusted by her students (Sierra Boggess, Alexandra Silber and Garrett Sorenson) as they remind her of her own triumphs onstage, her bitter rivals, the savage reviews and a love affair with magnate Aristotle Onassis.
Sierra is a gem and a powerhouse.
Sierra?
Tyne Daly is so versatile and a major talent. I'd love to have seen her on Broadway!
I am a huge fan but she is miscast. And her accent is so inconsistent. I saw Zoe Caldwell who was heartstopping.
She doesn't sound like Callas' Juilliard Master Class recordings sound. MC had a much lower speaking voice and didn't scream at all.
I saw the play with Tyne Daly. she was terrible in Master Class. That wasn't Callas. I've seen this play many times and some actresses scream. I think Zoe Caldwell and in Mexico Diana Bracho had the closest resemblance to Callas.
+niptucky I wish you could see it in Poland with Krystyna Janda. She is perfect in this role. And she has this low speaking voice.
+abelsincain It's not an imitation of the classes, it is a PLAY!
+swarze oz The woman doesn't reflect Callas personality at all, and the play is about her. Otherwise, they could just have said it's about a random screaming opera diva wannabe.
SO good. Love Tyne.
The always amazing Tyne Daly.
Tyne Daly is such a talent!!
No. This is not Callas at all....It's just an poor imagination. Just listen the recordings of 'real' juliard masterclass. She was really kind and gracious and also generous. Full of respect. That day. She was real diva with such a passion but not hysterical women at all.
Daly was nothing like Callas but she acted the shit out this role. The play was sort of a departure from how Callas was but the outlining message is there . Callas was funny slightly piercing and very critical but it was never outlandish . The play scripted that all in . And of course virtunonkne managed her vocal speaking timbre dialects accent. A mixture of British Received Pronunciation, Milanese Italian and New York American accents . Tough. But the play is very entertaining.
the multi talented TD
Divine looks great!
Brava!
This is totally wrong. Nothing about this rings Callas. Listen to her Julliard classes, you’ll notice the vast difference.
Mayve becuase this isn't Callas but an actress in a play inspired by her...
@@bigred8432 , I saw both Zoe Caldwell and Patti LuPone in this role, and they carried Callas onstage with their performances.
@@brendan-kailerlieb4347 Great
She captured Callas'voice and manners perfectly....when Faye Dunaway did the role it appeared as if she was playing well....Ms. Dunaway.
Callas was never this overtly angry in any of the master classes. This is ridiculous
It be a pretty boring play if it just adapted what was totally tru
@@bigred8432 Well, gosh, we can't have something that is true, huh? Problem is the majority of people don't know that it isn't true.
@@bmbutler2 If what is true is dramatic or interesting enough to hold an audience for a full play, then yes sure.
No. There is nothing of Callas here. LuPone.... WHERE IS LuPONE????
I saw both LuPone and Zoe Caldwell play this role and they were brilliant.
I really admire Tyne's characterization of Callas!
omg. reminds me why i changed my major lol!
Isn't there more footage from this play?
Callas s voice was lower and softer.I prefer Zoe Cadwell in the role
People who haven't lived as an opera singer.... Can never understand....
Way too angry a portrayal of Maria Callas... not even recognizable
Callas definitely had bite but she tried to cover it with charm. TD is utterly charmless.
I hear this play differently than it’s acted in this production. It’s too quick and flippant, and lacks intensity.
This is not like Callas. Lol.
But it's like a lot of master classes.
wow. That's the thinnest I've seen her in years!
Mannerisms and the hint of of a dialect
I don’t think she’s ever heard a Greek say po po po
After Zoe Caldwell, this is...pretty bad.
I love Tyne Daly, but her and the other actors are playing this like a sitcom. It doesn't feel lived in, it feels like they're setting up the next punchline.
@@misfittoys5873 THANK YOU for giving it words, that's exactly how it feels.
It's not wholeheartedly their fault, it's the writing as well. But I think the trick is transcending it. I wholly recommend watching Zoe Caldwell's women in theatre interview, she's fascinating!
@@misfittoys5873 The writing is fine. The fault lies with the director.
@@eirikastokes9652 - as someone else stated in another reply, it's the pace. They are going so fast, saying lines instead of having a real dialogue. What's the rush?
This ‘play’ is the worst misrepresentation of someone that I’ve ever seen. Pretty much slander. Terrence McNally should be ashamed.
It's not McNally's fault. I would blame this director. This looks nothing like the original. Zoe Caldwell played Callas with grandness and style.
NONSENSE
Tyne Daly was great in "Gypsy," but, considering how sensitive Callas was about once being fat, it's kind of in poor taste to have he play Callas.
