Honestly, even if it HAS been some time since they'd heard from the Phantom, they've got some nerve to throw a freaking MASQUERADE ball, of all things.
Yeah, you'd think at least Madame Giry would know better, since she knows Erik better than most. I'd imagine her being more against the ball and trying to get the managers to cancel it.
@@brunalevasier1893 I didn't make that connection until the second time seeing it when the Phantom listens to it on his music box. But your comment gave me even more insight.
I just love the part when everyone else is still singing and Christine is the only one who freezes with her hands still up, like she just /knows/ it's him
Noo. Don Juan Triumphant was an opera he started writing in a very young age but was never able to finish it (because of the part "Point Of No Return") because for that part you need to know and understand the passion, lust and all the emotions that love makes you feel. Since the Phantom was never shown love in his life he didnt know what it felt like and he never completed the play and left it like that. After he met Christine he fell in love for the first time in his life and finally was able to aknowledge the true feeling of love, passion and desire. So after that it was easy for him to complete the final piece of the play that was called as the whole opera "Don Juan Triumphant" (point of no return). When he says " I have returned you an opera" is because he had left the opera in the theater and a lot of people had read it. But now he took it back, finished the last part and returned it to them.
I know that they haven't seen the phantom for months now, but dude, she TOLD you back in the song just before All I Ask of You. (And he didn't believe her then, just told her she'd been dreaming!) Anyway, I always get exasperated at Raoul for not having faith in Christine.
@@enigmace9787 Exactly. Raoul gaslights Christine by telling her what she's experiencing with a highly dangerous man isn't real. What a caring fiancé am I right? Also, he _forces_ her to become human bait for the phantom even when she makes it clear that she was uncomfortable doing so. And raoul just radiates those "I am a man, you are a woman, you listen to me." Vibes
I love that you can here the exact moment he would’ve entered the room. Even before people start to notice his presence, you can here the “footsteps” in the backround at around 4:00
Masquerade is by far my most favorite PotO song. Here we have a song in a sound track that for once sounds like (almost) everyone is having fun, and yet you can still feel that tone of uncertainty lingering.
Not to forget that they cover they faces as to have fun. But The Phantome has to hide because he lives in shame and people hate him for his face. For him its a everday thing. While for them its only for a party one day 😭😭😭
I love the fact you can hear the little ripple that went through the audience as they noticed one of the dancers resembles the Phantom; it's more obvious in this performance than most others I've seen, which is why the audience notice it, I think.
Annoyingly, he's not visible on the DVD. The broadcast used different camera angles and he was visible in those, but you can hear the flurry, a low utterance of voices behind the music. To make my case in point, later on, La Carlotta is singing and lifts her arm as she does in. In the DVD, she is seen straight on. The angle used in the broadcast was almost side-on. The reason for the change was because when she lifted her arm, you could see someone in the audience who was asleep!
I've always noticed the song getting more and more unnerving and ominous after 4:00. I always interpreted it as Christine getting more and more uneasy about the Phantom finding her.
I think the way christine starts looking at everyone weirdly it is implied she is seeing the phantom in the crowd of masks. Or is scared she is. And then her fears prove true when the phantom shows himself.
Honestly I love this cast but my favorite is the newer touring cast, the one with Derrick Davis (I hope I spelt that right) and this cast is the closest I can get to it
I love the part when the phantom arrives and all of them bowed at the end of masquerade except for Christine who felt the Phantom's presence before any of them did
It was late at night and me and my mom were driving home from a small one day trip we had and I wanted to listen to some music and this song was playing so my mom turned it on full volume and we were just having the time of are life sing and dancing to this song! So whenever I hear this song it makes me think of my mother and how much she means to me!
watched it on Broadway for the first time last night. this knocks Chicago in the water. This is a major production. I had a bad experience my first time & left the show, in 2013. No ushers back then doing their job. Mobile phone next to me going off three times. This time, security in force like secret security. great show. 3rd row I felt the torches heat my face. saw the gun sparks light up, smelled the smoke thru my mask. I am in love with show. Magical.
Anyone else think that it sounds like someone’s laughing while saying the “around you” line at 1:15? I swear every time I listen to this, I hear a light chuckle during that part, but I’ve never heard anyone mention it!
Tbh I feel like Sierra goes sharp a lot although I still adore her voice. There is no competing with Ramin though. I would love to hear him and Emmy Rossum from the movie to duet
Tilly goodwin she didn't go sharp btw, she's just singing those really high notes without actually going sharp which is amazing. Well she us a professional
Jessie Seabridge Late comment, but I highly agree. I’d say the same thing for Gerard Butler, but he isn’t even a singer. Emmy Rossom was just singing her songs, not living them like Sierra
I agree that she goes sharp. I feel like even at the end to the title song the Phantom of the Opera her notes were strong but sharp. Even the last "Anywhere You Go To" was sharp for All I Ask of You. She's still amazing but that's just what I noticed
thinking about buying some wireless earbuds... keep ripping my headphones out doing the choreography and phantom fucking blasts out of my room at 3am...my flatmates must think i'm so weird
Keeta, Fairy of art lol 😂 I think it must be cause I’m a musical theater student and we sing on pitch with less vibrato. It’s weird but compared to me they sound like they are yelling not singing😂😂😂
oh my god yes, finally! finally someone else who noticed that the 25th anniversary cast isn't particularly good at singing (especially in masquerade, where each time they sing 'masquerade!' someone is REALLY off pitch)
@@henrik501 It's supposed to sound like that. It's the opera people throwing a ball to try and cover up how spooked they're getting waiting for the other shoe to drop, but the anxiety is still bleeding through. Thus, slightly off pitch and discordant, which gets worse and worse as the song goes on.
Honestly, even if it HAS been some time since they'd heard from the Phantom, they've got some nerve to throw a freaking MASQUERADE ball, of all things.
The fear of the name keeps the fear of the man. Or you can say they don't give in to terrorists? XD
The managers: we haven't seen him in months! What a shame he came come to the masquerade ball!!
The phantom of the Opera: bet
Really though :'D
Seriously 🙄 Don’t encourage him! lol

Woah nice point thank you!

The Phantom got tired of writing notes so he wrote an opera instead.
And the managers probably owe him about...120,000 francs in the span of 6 months.

The royal Albert hall red death costume is one of my favorites, dare I say the favorite?
I'd say that it's my favorite as well! The live version of Phantom definitely touched on some things that the movie didn't in regards to the costumes
My favorites are this version and the silent film version
It's pretty epic

BUY tickets people. The best musical of ALL time!
Honestly, 'Masquerade/ Why so silent... ?' is one of the best scenes of the west end musical :)!!!!
How do you find the play to buy tickets!
The instrumentals toward the end of Masquerade remind me so much of the music from an old fashion carousel.

i prefer the phantoms extended line in the film; when he sings to christine in that raised tempo, its my favourite melody in the whole show
You can find that line in "Notes/Twisted Every Way."
I like to think this part is a homage to The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, if you’ve read it you understand
Niall Prideaux what the phantom's costume, it's totally a masque of the red death reference
My favorite part 😍

cause the movie was bad

What are the odds that the phantom owns a music box with the same song. Is that supposed to be a coincidence?
My headcannon is that he wrote the song the chorus is singing, and that it's being performed by the opera members for the rest of the party goers.
