  • Video created in 2021 - 5 December
Here's a timelapse video of sculpting stylized/fantasy character 2B from NieR Automata. In this video I'm showing you how I sculpt her head and hair primarily. Everything is sculpted and modeled in Blender, hair polish and vertex paint done in Zbrush, rendered in Cycles, final images compositing was done in Photoshop. This is part of a bigger project where I want to make a full body of her, that's why in the renders it's still labeled work in progress.
The video is consist of many different sessions put together into one. Any skipped or unrecorded footage are due to technical errors or to protect the privacy of the creator such as if file explorer shown visible sensitive information regarding personal information or work-related for example while saving or export-importing files.
Any reference images seen in the video I do not own them. It's all screenshots from the game or images found in Google and it's all for references and educational purposes only.

I'm very sorry, but I have to take down the NON-timelapse version of my 2B Head and Hair Sculpting Video Process in my Gumroad. I got informed that it would be a problem with Square Enix moving forward. I don't want to take any risk. But don't worry, for the people that bought it, you guys can still able to keep the files. But for people that are want to buy it. It's not available anymore.
Once again, I'm very sorry for the inconvenience 🙏
In return. I will make another product showing my sculpting process in real-time in the future with completely my original character. Hopefuly with better editing and possibly with narration too!

But, get 3.1 Alpha and it has pen pressure, of course not in Vertex Paint mode, but in Sculpt mode and here is Paint button which allows you to vertex paint even on the much heavier meshes. And you can use it as texture in every node - diffuse, specular or mix.

Stunning, as always. Your 2B interpretation is spot on.
The only critique I have isn't art related. I'm begging you, please don't loop the same song for 50 minutes next time. xD
Lastly, I have a few questions:
    1. What exactly do you use the 3D grid for, checking proportions? Do you have a matching grid placed over your off-screen reference images?
    2. Why do you use Zbrush for vertex painting over Blender?
    3. You also did some interesting work with the shaders. It's nothing complex, but I'd love to hear about your creative thought process.
With that out of the way, I wish you a fabulous day. Have fun sculpting the body!

      1. I have been using that style of grid reference since back in the day. It's just to make sure that the proportion are good.
      2. Blender's current vertex paint are not usable at high res meshes.

How good a character's look is depending on people's taste so I don't know how good this for you but I made this with Blender and no Zbrush involved ruclips.net/video/hYaG09oSMhA/видео.html

The answer is absolutely! Blender is an amazing tool to make incredible art. If you do get the chance to try out other programs though do it! You never know what will suit you best at the end of the day. Blender is the only one that gives so many options and tools at THAT quality for free so it has my respect.

@@AlexToti No, I know Blender, but so many character tutorials, including this video, switched to ZBrush or Substance Painter or other expensive programmes during the tutorial so I wonder if it is actually possible to create a finished product using Blender only.

    • @AlexToti
      @AlexToti 2 года назад +1

@@typingcat It is still possible to make a piece from start to finish in blender. The reason people tend to use these other programmes is because they are designed specifically to do one or two things extremely well while blender is an all around software. For example, zbrush is amazing at sculpting and texture painting but has no animation and no one really uses it to render things. Maya and 3dsMax are amazing for modeling animating and rendering but I’ve never seen anyone use these programmes to sculpt. Blender is a Jack of all trades basically. There is not a step in the process that blender won’t allow you to create something of quality. Sorry for the long text, I hope I’m helping

@@typingcat definitely, the blender foundation makes animated videos with blender (not sure if they use some other software, maybe like Photoshop, but that can easily be substituted)

Why did you poly paint in zbrush and not in blender?

At this point when I made this sculpt Blender's vertex paint is very heavy compared to Zbrush.

In most cases butuh UV map misal kalo mau texturing di Painter. Tapi kalo cuma butuh basic color aja bisa pake polypaint.
