Goes to show that information can indeed be disseminated with out a lot of palaver. A presentation come of experience. Thankyou. Did anyone notice, no noise (music?), no repetition, no yelling, no self aggrandisement, no bouncing camera And no BS. Again thankyou.
Just wow! I’m a beginner woodworker and had no idea what I didn’t know!! Thank you so much for the valuable information!! Oh, and subscribed after the second chuckle you gave me.
Nice video now I know what to look for. I thought its the marine one is the best plywood, I didn't know until now about the birch plywood that I always see on good looking plywood made furniture.
hey Thank you !! That was a GREAT session, heaps of useful info, demistified the ins and outs nicely. Im keen to learn more about woods and timbers so, More please ! BTW, Okoumi has only just arrived in South Australia's biggest hardware store. Not as layered ply though, its more jointed boards ( not sure what that is actually called. I just made 2 small shelves with it and have concerns that might have been a silly idea. Even though its jointed it doesnt appear very stable. Also, I didn't use polyurethane, I used oil to finish it. Again, not very successful.
Thank you for the comment, glad it was a helpful video. Sorry about the Okoumi shelves, thats why I prefer to go with Ply for my projects, the stability over time is golden.
Tongue and groove plywood southern pine 48 qty I’m saying you this because I’m building a house and the builders got the plywood outside my walls that’s the stuff he got for me and I was supposed to get Zip let me know that’s a good plywood for outside my house please
Your video is very good, from which I realize that it is very important to do a good job professionally and seriously, simplify things, say simply, do simply, and let your audience and understand quickly.
Thanks for the video! Would you recommend using these marine grade plywoods as a kitchen table top? Maybe with some varnish on it to protect it more from water? I really like the Okume one for this.
Great vid.... what about shutterply? I understand that its used in concstruction, but alas am trying to work out the difference between that an "plywood" - if there is and difference that is?
I wish someone would do a session exclusively on adhesives... tapes and glues. I've just been delving into the minefield that is "luthier grade" glues.... Whoa... who knew??
Hi there, thankyou so much for your video. I wonder what kind of woods i should use to build an interior for a motor bus home? I am looking to build something like a japanese platform like, and wonder what kind of woods that isnt too pricey, but durable and able to support heavy weights, andddd i wonder which would absorb moisture and release as you know living in a motorhome, rots and humids and fungis is something i need to be aware of? Also, doesnt bend and behave like a young kid Oak as you mentioned ahahh! So much im asking.. thankyou if you could give me an advice, it would be so helpful. I think the humidity would be more important as to the walls of the bus, i am thinking of ply but i guess thats what everyone uses also.
Hi Sunflower, you could use marine plywood this is what most people use. Another option would be a solid wood like japanese cedar. This would be your best bet for the humidity. Good luck with the project it sounds like a lot of fun. Let me know if you have any more questions
just a thought... buses, camper, caravans are notorious for building up condensation due to poor air circulation (ie design). Do your research and be happy !!
@@Universalplysa I was thinking of using a 'regular' BC plywood then prepare and paint it with marine paint! I remember back in the maritime world we would cover the wood with thin layers of fiber glass and use marine grade waterproofing paint. I know see that all this would require more time, labour, and financial resources. In addition, the base unit for the kitchen sink with such treatment would weight way too much! Is there a letter-number designation that refers to marine (waterproofing) plywood? WBP?
We dont have most of what you're talking about as far as the structural integrety of the plywood. What I saw was plywood with more than five ply's. The only thing with more ply's is "Baltic Birch" or a copy of that. The only alternative is what is referred to as "pro-core" that has still only five ply's but the middle ply is a thicker MDF ply for stability.
Would you recommend using marine plywood for a dinning table for kids or birch? Because of juices and water spillings. I am just starting woodwork and want to do the table as a project.
Would birch plywood be a better choice for resisting wood-eating insects when building indoor tables? I live in a tropical climate where such insects thrive. ...Roy
Hi I am laying soundproof MLV 4ml thick need to put 6ml ply on top of it to put evocore 360 click flooring needs to be level and stay flat and strong for the evocore 360 flooring can you help on what to buy I am in Scotland Uk (I am on a small budget)
Love the facts, without flounder. Question: As we all know the price of wood has restricted many projects. I have a local packaging company that can supply unlimited quantities of 2440 x 300 Off Cut Strips at the “Right Money” I imagine base quality, but will do for my needs. I’m hoping to laminate either 2x9mm sheets, or 3x9mm 2440 strips. I have no “Press” simply working from my garage. Eventually, could I get away with PVA glue, or should I use my Fav: Gorilla Glue?
Looking for highest quality plywood for subfloor. Placing lament flooring planks on top when finished. What is the highest quality plywood I should use for the subfloor. Keep in mind I want to have no issues and cost is not a concern. Am I looking for Birch Plywood for its strength and stability characteristics? Please comment and let me know if I am on the right track. Thanks for a wonderful video!
Yes Birch would be your best option if you send us your details on our contact form universalply.com/contact-us/ we can give you a call and help you with more details on your project
Hello! Thanks for your videos! I have a question.. How stable is plywood in reference to thickness? If I get one of good quality, am I going to get same thickness every time I get a plywood board?
Recently I've noticed double storey houses built and plywood is used for the floor which plywood would be best to use as a floor for a double story house
Hi Robyn Thank you for your question, Tight grained plywood is best. So Birch plywood. It also has no voids so patterns will be cleaner and give you a better looking finish
Thank you for posting this very informative and educational video as I am new to wood working and the information provided will help my in selection my plywood. I do have a couple questions, 1st would you recommend Marine or Pine Plywood for a garage workshop cabinets. 2nd would you recommend Baltic Birch for shop Jigs. I'm aware this video is two year old, but hope these questions do not fall upon a blind eyes.
Thank you for your questions. Pine Plywood will work for cabinets that will be in a garage and not exposed to water. Birch will make beautiful looking jigs for your shop if affordability is not a problem. Pine Ply will be much more affordable if you are looking for a budget friendly option. Let us know how the jigs go and which ones you make.
@dontyrrell Buying plywood locally helps keep the cost down because of the cost to ship it, especially full sheets. Find a local cabinet shop and call them. Ask where they are sourcing their plywood from. Sometimes their supplier may not want to deal in small quantities or mess around with a few sheets. If they don't, ask the cabinet shop to sell you what your looking for. Almost any cabinet shop will regularly carry baltic birch plywood. Where you might run into a problem, baltic birch is in high demand because one of the major producer's is out of the ability to sell, Russia. Other countries like Finland and Norway are still providing supply, but not able to fill the gap. That means sourcing it might be a little tough right now, and if you are able to get any, be prepared as the prices are about 2X what they were in January of 2022.
Hi David, yes you can speak to Gareth 083 278 8077 or 021 385 3157 in our Cape Town office and he will be able to assist you. What are you going to be making?
