    Does the cold hardiness of the final grafted tree depends on the rootstock or on the scion?

    I have ordered some Jackfruit seeds so I can see how well they do in the Newcastle & Hunter area in New South Wales.
    My grandfather had no trouble growing paw paw (papaya) when he was alive & lived just outside of Mullumbimby as they don't seem to have trouble with winter frosts in that area,they were about 20 kilometres away from the ocean.
    We had a self sown one at Seaham about 20 years ago which was starting to produce fruit,we may have had another tree to pollinate it,or it may have been a hermaphrodite sexually.
    The frost killed it one winter but there are a couple which have been growing strongly in Raymond Terrace, maybe we haven't had any big frosts as of late as last winter was the warmest on record.
    The tropical plants grow well up at Mullumbimby but there is only about a 3 degree Celsius difference between their lowest winter average & ours,it's the same with their maximum summer average, it's only about 1 degree hotter.
    So,I think both the paw paw & jackfruit will grow o.k. in my area providing that I offer the plants protection against possible frosts & provide them with water.
    The only thing that is very different about here & there is that they have higher rainfall.

    Will wrapping newspaper around a guanabana (soursop) tree also help? I don't understand what you mean by frost coming up from the ground.

      frost is heavey air / mist, it behaves a lot like water. it piles up in valleys and collects in low areas and as it falls down hill if it hits a barrier like a fence it piles up untill it is the height of a fence before cascading over it and falling down hill.

      From seed grown tree means 5-7 years. If it’s grafted 3-4 years. If you plant Vietnamese super early variety(grafted) give fruit in 1 year itself(but sweetness level little low as compare to others)

    • @griffinc3263
      @griffinc3263 3 года назад

      Jackfruit probably won’t fruit well in a Mediterranean climate. They like wet summers
