Man, that equipment would be a lifesaver for me!! I'm a Mobile Outboard Tech in Boston, MA and had a NIGHTMARE last season. 31' Contender with twin 300 HDPI's wasn't winterized (fuel system wasn't drained). Both motors needed VST cleaned, medium pressure fuel filters, medium pressure fuel pump, cleaned injectors and changed mystery filters. Motors still ran like crap, stalled out, idled poorly and no WOT. The owner assured me the fuel system on the boat was fine (fuel lines, water separators, tanks, pickup tubes ect.). Well after a couple thousand in motor work, I insisted we take a look at the boat fuel system. Well turns out the pickup screens were clogged and causing the fuel pressure to drop from 980PSI to 150PSI!! I use ALOT of your tips/tricks day to day, and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make these videos! Thanks AGAIN! #gasleak

Brilliant thank you, so informative yet so simple, I had a stroke 13 years ago, I was totally paralysed down the right hand side and blind in the right eye, To see me now you would never believe I ever had a stroke. but I have short term memory loss and I can't learn nothing new, I don't have a boat yet but I want a Honwave T32 IE with a 15hp outboard. I am saving as many good channels as I can to learn about my new hobby , after my stroke I was watching kids channels to teach me things because they put it over so simple I can take it in. My last fuel problem stemed from the ethanol gas eating the inside of the fuel line and clogging it down. A new ethanol ready hose cured the problemo. Yes I know no ethanol but I run additives and have no problems for over 10 years except the hose. I also run the fuel out of the engine when sitting.

I have gone through my entire fuel system from tank pickup to carbs. I pressure tested the fuel line and connectors under water and looked for bubbles - there were none. I put on some clear fuel line as shown and saw lots of air getting in. It turns out to be an el-cheapo Walmart fuel connector. Replaced with an OMC and it cleared up my problems. Thanks for the tips!

I once had an 85 Johnson that would suddenly just run out of fuel. If it sat, off, for a few minutes, it might run for several more hours before acting up again.
Of course, catching it in the act became a challenge.
Starting at the engine and working toward the tank, we finally found it.
Someone, probably me, had dropped the cap from a plastic oil container in the fuel filler neck. That cap worked its way into the tank and would sometimes get sucked onto the pick up tube.
We removed the tank, cleaned it out and that engine ran for many more years without so much as a hiccup.

Just had a sneaky one. A nice Evinrude kept running out of fuel. No air bubbles or flat bulb. Lift pump and high pressure pump both had great output, yet still running out of fuel. Was the vapor relief HOSE (not the float switch) from the VST. That hose lets air/vaport out of the VST. The clogged hose was pressurizing the VST, not allowing fuel to enter. Was a pain to find, but I'll always remember that one. Hopefully, this tip will help you one day, as your tips have helped me in the past!

    • @AlexTheMD
      @AlexTheMD 3 года назад

Was wondering if you could tell me how you figured this out. I think I am having the same issue. When I feed the VST (FSM) via a clean jar of fuel, I can see air bubbles exiting the fuel hose into the jar, like a steady stream. I am guess this means vapor in the tank has no other way to escape because my regulator is failing or the hose is clogged.

    • @thilltony3362
      @thilltony3362 3 года назад

@@AlexTheMD ut was because everything else tested correctly. Lift pump was strong, high pressure pump was strong, everything clean. If the lid of the vst was off, it filled up fast. When on, it wouldn't. Process of elimination. I hope this helps.

One thing worth remembering is your fuel tank breather, external tanks have a valve that needs to be open in the running position and closed when not in use, easily overlooked.

I have a Johnson GT 150 that runs out of fuel in the carbs. I suspect the VRO pump is failing because I have checked/replaced every part of the fuel system leading up to the pump and one time I got the VRO flow warning chime. Another thing is that it seems to run well when I pump the primer ball but it takes very little run time for the primer ball to get soft again and the motor to start starving for fuel.

#gasleak ..Had fuel hose inner lining become hard/ brittle and start separating from the outer rubber (from using ethanol). This contaminated the system and also resulted in a "flap" / or check valve effect causing a fuel restriction. Upgraded the hoses , replaced filters and the fuel pump and that solved the issue. Thanks for this informative tutorial on diagnosing the fuel system.

I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and put fresh gas. Also changed the connector that connects from the hose to the tank. It seems that the metal canisters can rot out and leak in as little as six months. I have lost at least four. Also on that yamaha the fine screen on the side of the engine can clog but not enough to pass fuel with the primer bulb but enough that the vacuum operated lift pumps cant keep up. Cleaned or replace the fine mesh filter and off we go ! Thanks for the videos . Learn something every day !

A few stories for fuel problems.
While fueling the stern tanks an employee of the fuel docks went to the bow to help out, dumped 150l of diesel in my bow water tanks.
Another one, while fueling my stern diesel tanks grabbed a hose off the rack under the label "diesel", began fueling. After a while pulled the hose up to check level and noticed it didn't look right. Yup, water. A couple hundred liters of water in my fuel tanks.
Pumped out the tank, got a few spare sets of water separator filter media.
After running for an hour drained the bowl, after a few more changed the filters.
Of course as soon as I got into rough water the turbulence stirred up all the water and the vacuum pressure started going way up on one engine, so shut down one engine and did a filter change while the boat drifted in huge waves. PITA.
Now the good ones, 21' landing craft with very low hours, took it offshore and the fuel pickup in the tank came off.
Had to disconnect fuel line, stick it in a 20l portable container and siphon fuel into the engine to get home.
Don't know if you care about trucks, but two good ones there too.
Loaded truck, fuel pump quit. Siphoned some gas out of the tank and put the portable container on the roof, a piece of insulation froman electricla wire harness for trailer lights was salvaged and used to siphon form the roof straight to the carb.
Funny one; car hit a big pot hole, stopped running.
After a while figured out it was no fuel, searched all over, eventually found an emergency fuel shut off switch in the trunk that was flipped to off by spare tire flopping around in the trunk.
    Got more, but...

I've got to try again to fix an air leak on my 115 evinrude. I checked everything from the ball to the fuel pump. It ran good the first time out, I have to keep priming the bulb for about 15 minutes while the motor is running. Keeps loosing prime. Once I get it primed after that, it runs and starts all day w/o priming again. I'll have to look at the tank again. I looked there last year and it looked good. I'll put the clear hose at the connection to the tank this year and see if I see bubbles.

Okay, old 1970's 18hp evinrude starving for fuel. Bought new primer bulb since old buld kept going soft and quit working. Still no suction from tank. Tried prime straight back into tank with out the connector at one end and still no suction. Checked both ends (male and femal) of fuel line quick connector and they were both fine givin they were also new. Straw going into tank clear of any debris. Dumbfounded as to why it won't suck out if tank.

I love your channel full of good tips. When I bought my boat I was fooled precisely because of a problem in the fuel unit (float on a 2007 Mercury 80 hp Efi) . But in the end it turned out to be favorable to my side. The technicians that the previous owner had wanted to sell a complete unit of fuel instead of making a diagnosis so the owner agreed to lower the sale price by 2k and the float Coste 70€ I only found out about this problem after I did the boat restoration.

Kinked or pinched fuel lines is my first check. I always carry a Portable on board then water and other problems won't bother it. Fresh water things don't rust out I have had water in the main tank and it took all 3 of my water separators to get me home. Someone else drove I would bleed the water off as it went into the trap, the last 2 miles was nip and tuck to makes it back. One can polish their fuel by pumping out into the traps with a electric pump and then back into the tank over and over quite common with the diesel engines.

Went nuts trying to troubleshoot this on my 94 Yamaha 150. One second she was running excellent, next thing I know she won’t go above 2,000 rpm without stalling. Replaced both fuel pumps, spin on filter and bracket, removed the ASV and checked the pickup, new OEM primer. Still no dice. Replaced all hoses EXCEPT the one in the rigging tube to engine. Well, when I pulled that out the problem was very apparent. The hose was swollen right were the rigging tube makes it’s bend on the way up to the engine. Looked like a python that swallowed a bunch of rats! Snaking in a new fuel line resulted in like new performance! Change your lines every few years. The ethanol will take them out. Even if they look good where you can see them. They could be deteriorating in places you can’t! #gasleak

I have a boat that I laid up for a few years. It has a Yamaha 2004 F225. I took it to a recommended dealer. Fuel tank was drained and a 100hr service was performed. The engine idle rough and had no power and stalled when accelerating. After a back and forth with the service shop and $3500 later I decided I could do no worse.
Problem was the hose clamp at the pressure side of the primer bulb was not in the center of the fitting and was loose. Since then it ran well until this trip and after 15 minutes it stalled. I went through the "repair by substitution" game, figured out how to load the Yamaha 1.33 diagnostic on my old laptop and found the Air Flow sensor was bad and a hint that the shifter cable was a little worn. Adjusted the slide in the engine, replaced the Air flow sensor. The 1st tool I will pick up now is my computer.

2021(9 hours) 50 HP 4 stroke will not pick up fuel from the tank. If I pump the ball to keep the filter full it will run perfect. I pulled the mechanical fuel pump off the back of the block. I opened it up but it looks perfect. I can't find any air leaks and I also removed the VTS pump to make sure it was not stuck open or closed, it looks new inside as well. I'm not a part changer, I am a mechanic but at this point, it looks like the mechanical pump. Any ideas?

With 9 hours, most likely it's a boat issue not an engine issue, but that's just because you say the primmer bulb keeps it running, like there there needs to be more of a vacuum to pull the fuel. I'd check the boat first, before condemning the fuel pump but hopefully you've figured this out :)

When first got into boating there was not much ethanol enhanced gasoline around, Fast forward 30 years after taking a hiatus from boating and we have ethanol, the destroyer of cheap fuel lines. When I ran into the problem it was a real head scratcher as I had changed the line from the tank to the primer bulb with one brand of line but ran out of that line. I substituted a lesser quality product from the primer bulb to the engine. This happened in the fall of one season. Come spring and I was ready to go fishing so as usual I got out the garden hose and muffs to test everything at home. Pumped up the primer to a firm feel and cranked, and cranked, and cranked. No joy. After troubleshooting I found that the cheap fuel line from the primer bulb to the engine had deteriorated and the lining turned into pieces and jelly that had gunked up the inlet at the engine. Took a couple of hours to figure it out but lesson learned. #gasleak

Hi I have a 175 Yamaha BETO engine that sometimes cuts out when idling after out on the water most of the day.
Usually no issue to get it going again but recently I was caught out in middle of Jervis Bay 🇦🇺 and had to get towed back to ramp because could not restart the engine. But later back at home I hooked up the hose to flush the engine and it fires up no problem! Serviced every year but mechanic cannot tell me what the issue is because always starts when on land. One thing I did notice this time was there was no activation /humming (fuel pump) sound when I turned the key to on position when the engine would not start. After letting it sit for about an hour I gave it another go and the fuel pump activated / humming sound could be heard and the engine started. What could be the issue of an intermittently working fuel pump ? Cheers

Bought a pontoon boat last year, my first boat ever. Tested it in the yard w muffs, which Jiggled off n I ended cookin my water pump. Now I DON’T trust the muffs lol.
New water pump and put the leg in a barrel full of water, tested fine!! I’m so excited I even invite a boat load of friends for my maiden voyage....
During testing in my yard, the boat was bow down. In the water, the boat was stern down. Runs n idles fine until we get things loaded up n head out on the water. Then the engine dies as we’re about 50 yards from shore & absolutely no start after that. Guess I’m lucky I had lots of spare bodies to help me paddle our way... LOL
Lucky for us, our friendly neighborhood boaters out on the water seen our plight n offered to tow us back to shore, God Bless em!! They tried to help by assisting in some trouble shooting n checking n swapping plugs even, which he gave me.
Long story short, turns out there was jus enough water in the tank to put the pickup tube under water when I revved it up n headed for open water.
We ate our lunch in the shade of some big spruce trees that afternoon, luckily nobody got a sunburn that day lol.
Got her loaded up n home. Checked compression then I installed a cheap inline filter to confirm my theory of water in the fuel. Tested in the barrel of water in my yard, water showed up in the filter. I drained my tank n was AMAZED by how much water was actually in the fuel tank. Mounted a water separator and added a Jerry can of Fresh New fuel and away she went. Hasn’t hesitated at all since n I check constantly for fuel contamination.
Thanks for reading folks, HAPPY BOATING Y’ALL!!!

I have 2 ox66 250s, park them running and both won’t start. I checked the filters, high and low fuel pump, injector and still won’t start. I also drained the fuel system and ran it off a gallon bottle thinking it was old gas in the boat tank but still nothing. I sprayed quick start in intake fires right up then dies. It seems like a fuel problem but everything checks out good. Not sure what else can be the problem.

Idk are you saying it won't start, like it won't turn over or it will turn over but won't start? Interesting that it is both engines, idk if you are looking at a fuel issue when you have both engines not starting, maybe the lanyard, or something like that, hard to say what is going on.

    • @Jason-zr6il

@@BornAgainBoating it turns over but won’t start. If you use quick start fluid they will start right up then dies off. What’s puzzling is both are doing it now but were left running. I would think the lanyard would stop the spark but both engines has spark, fresh fuel, and all injectors spraying.

I had a garage boat mechanic do my annual service on a mercury pro xs 225. Idiot shredded the fuel filter on top of the vst so he thought he could use a hammer and flat head to remove it. I got it back and hit the lake without him telling me what happened. Engine was idling fine but would sputter and have trouble trying to plane. I went through 3 shops trying to figure it out and the last one did. There were little red chunks from the filter housing inside the vst that was blocking the float causing my engine to run out of fuel. So now I service the boat myself.

This past labor day Monday. Ran into fuel/air problem. F-ing choke wouldn't open and engine didn't want to run. then, i ran into issues with fuel leaking from near the carburetor. Unfortunately, i have a "rare" motor. Andi don't mean "rare" as in a unicorn, i mean rare as in i apparently have an ogre for an outboard so parts are super hard to find around here and a outboard tech that is willing to work on it is even harder to find. 1994-95 2 stroke 3 cylinder...wait for it... 70hp Force by Mercury Marine. I don't mind the bad reputation people say about them, the issue is parts are scarce.

my primer bulb was plum flat while the engine was starving for fuel. though it could be the primer bulb so i went out and got me a new one. before i head out to the lake i done some test at home and let the engine idle. the new primer bulb was doing its job with no restriction on the fuel system. let the engine warm up and every thing checks out. head back out to the lake and found out the primer bulb suck in flat again. the engine will not run no more than 1500 RPM. it will sit there and idle but will not run. this time the problem gotta be related to the anti siphon valve or pick up tube. what a total nightmare.

A really common problem I had while living and working on a boat was water contamination in portable fuel containers for my RHIB.
Doesn't seem to matter what kind of fuel additives or containers are used, all the respiration of moist air eventually gets some water in there.
Usually only problematic when running low RPM in rough weather for a long time, the low fuel flow rate would allow accumulation, and the turbulence would stir up stuff in the tanks a little more.
Anyways, with my Yamaha outboards they typically had three carbs, and the lowest carb would always be the first to get a little clogged up.
That lower cylinder would cut out and lose a little power, whenever that happened I could just turn to run in the trough of the waves, open up the throttles and clear out the water just by running high RPM for a few seconds.
I did have to rebuild the carbs while offshore once, don't recommend it. In hindsight, more frequent fuel filter changes would have been the correct fix for that problem.

my engine has a bad idle speed and it doesn't go up past 5000 rpm. I already replaced the fuel filter ( which the previous owner guaranteed to have changed but he didn't ) - and I also cleaned the injectors - fuel rail - and sensors. it's a four-stroke EFI Mercury outboard engine. I haven't tested it at sea after the changes, but the idle speed still oscilates. I'm hoping the least now I can cross the 5000 rpm limit. I don't have a way to check the iac valve, and it's too expensive to be easily replaced here in Brazil, and since the oscilation is not so much and the engine doesn't stall. I am not gonna touch it.

hey! yeah, i have a problem on my 90hp 2001 mercury (4 carbs, not injection), it will idle and do low speed, but when its hot, it you try to rev it up, power up, speed up, it will start shaking and not go above 2.5-3k rpm.. ill check all my fuel lines from the tank to the engine this week, and as someone here allso mentioned ill have to check if the tank air vent, because i can pressurise the primer bulb, but the pressure wont stay there for more than a few sec, so i HOPE there is just a clogged / corroded outlet / airvent on the tank... ill try a sepparate tank today, skipping all the old lines, testing if my problemm lies in the onboard aluminium tank...which i hope.

Do you have any advice? My 26 foot twin engine four stroke outboard‘s bogged down while accelerating but then are fine until they reach about 4500 RPMs. The bog down is well at high on speed. However, while running when The primer bulbs are pumped it kicks up and runs fine for about 10 seconds.
I replaced the fuel water separator‘s, and I am waiting for the new fuel strainers. Since it is happening with both motors I’m thinking it may be the fuel pick up strainer in the gas tank. From there once determined it’s not any hoses,,I’m thinking about replacing the fuel pumps, which I understand are only good for about 3 to 4 years
