    I've had an unopened bottle of the old 18 for months, but you're making me want to pull the cork now because this one sounds so appealing. Thanks Vin!

    I’m sipping this whilst watching your review . Weirdly enough, I get a finish of chocolate brownie with added spice. But then I’ve never been right since covid. Great review, keep up the excellent work.

    Hey Vin,great review,I could never put my nose on that sort of final note on the nose but yes,,,aniseed, definitely, I myself have the older bottle but will definitely be getting a replacement new bottle when that's gone,,I love deanston,I think they are putting out some cracking whiskies other than that dreaded Morrison's bottling,🤣🥃🥃,cheers buddy.

      You'd be surprised what comes to you. I didn't even have aniseed in my written notes, it just came to me while recording.

    Deanston 18 is lovely, so is the 12, and especially the Madeira Cask finish 2006. We had some of their Christmas crackers with the 12 inside. Great stuff. £50 for the 18 was a result! Nice one Vin.

      I think I've only ever owned the Virgin Oak before this and that was a cracker. Definitely need to stop putting off getting their bottles

    On my first taste I liked this a lot. Revisiting a week later, and it's really opened up, so much so it's up there with my favourite Balvenie 17yr. It's my first try of Deanston, will have to try their 12yr and virgin oak to see how they compare.

    Great review. I was intrigued by a comment you made about leaving it for a period of time in the glass before nosing it? I've not heard that before

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  3 года назад

      It's a rough theory that you want to allow the aromas time to start leaving the liquid. But it's just that, a theory.
      Try pouring a glass of an old favourite, leave it for 20 mins then pour another glass and see if there is any difference

    I’ve not cracked into my bottle yet, but going on the Virgin Oak and the 12 Year Old, I am sure this will be fantastic. The 18 is natural colour according to their website, I don’t mind it being omitted from the label if it is mentioned online, but I agree with your point on SWA rules, it needs to be made that if it is colour adjusted or chill filtered then it has to be mentioned.

    Nice review Vin. I do like the sound of the Summerton Club which sounds really interesting will check it out. Like the fact it’s £50 every two months and you seem to get samples as well sometimes. Also just got a bottle of Smokey Joe. Don’t think you’ve reviewed it and at around £30 it is a real steal and quality.....86 from Ralphy so you should check it out....cheers

    I agree with some other comments here. When the 12 is so good and I even enjoy their "cheap" virgin oak, it's tough to pay 3x the price. Still, one day, I have no doubt I will bring it home. Thanks for the review.

    I tried the 12 and it was very nice, a bit strong but you can feel they make a quality product, non chill might affect that. Horst said it affects younger whiskies. I find difference in the contrast tbh.

    The problem with Deanston 18 is Deanston 12. When a distillery’s 12 year expression is so darn good, it’s really hard to look any further. Nuff said.

      Vin - get it. You won’t regret it. Deanston 12 is probably my favorite 12 year whisky at the moment. Runs about $55 where I live, compared to the $130 for the 18.

      I personally dont agree. 12yr is nowhere near as good as the 18yr. Had two bottles of 18 and one of 12 and im struggling with the 12.

    • @axetwogrind
      @axetwogrind 2 года назад

      @@martynprice I agree. The 12 is decent for the price and as a introductory core
      range bottling....but the 18 outshines it in every way

    I love Deanston, I'm getting a little bit of a concern because prices keep on going up, I did not try new 18 yet I loved old one, in New York metro area it can be anywhere from 110 to 140+, old 18-year-olds I just found in the store for 165, you can get cheaper online but considering shipping it's more. I hope hype does not going to get to their heads and they will still produce very high quality juice.

    Regarding the comparison between the old and new bottling of the Deanston 18. In my opinion, comparing these side-by-side, I prefer the new Deanston 18 hands down. The old 18 YO tasted somehow over matured with slight dusty and bitter oak notes. The new 18 YO is an utter delight. Rich and perfectly balanced.
    The price here in Israel is 500 Shekels. That's £119. My bottle came without a box !!!

      That really is a lot of money! But interesting to hear your thought on the new vs old.

    I'd be pretty damn happy getting this for £50 :) We pay about 1199 SEK here in Sweden / €119. I know some other EU countries have it for €89ish. Only had one sample of the new 18, and it was so damn good. Really want a bottle, but am not paying €119. Waiting for the right bargain to come my way ;) Cheers, Vin!

    Amazing to see this show up now. Yesterday I bought a bottle of Deanston Virgin Oak (NAS). It’s literally the one Deanston that’s available in my province. I’m hoping that I like it.
    I’m figuring that it’s natural colour, just going by the ingredients list, but that might be wishful thinking in my part.

      The VO is really great dram, I'm sure you'll love it

  • @axetwogrind
    @axetwogrind 2 года назад

    I've had two of this bottling, and several of the old. While this is not unenjoyable or not worth the price, the older bottling is a bit better. More oily, better mouth-feel, and a bit more spicy and sweet with less alcohol taste. As I said, this one is enjoyable...but side by side and even with say a 25% price tag....I'll take the old bottling.

    Regarding the labelling, I find the lack of transparency on the label and box very strange considering Deanston's integrity bottling production ethics. It makes no sense.
    "Matured in First Fill Barrels" is definitely deceptive. At least the Deanston Virgin Oak states that it was "Finished in Virgin Oak casks". It is annoying though that the Virgin Oak label does not mention that the whisky was previously matured in Refill Ex-Bourbon hogsheads. However, the text of the new edition of the Deanston 18 is unforgivable.
    Incidentally, the old brown box Deanston 18 clearly states "Originally laid down in hogshead casks this Deanston Single Malt whisky was then transferred into carefully selected First Fill Kentucky Bourbon casks.....". So where did the new bottling go wrong?
    I'd put this down to a complete disconnect between the marketing guys at head office and the distillery. It seems that they never spoke to the distillery and composed the text purely based on some fact sheet they were handed.
    The problem is compounded by the fact that I know that people have been complaining for years when visiting the distillery (as well as online reviewers saying the same thing), and telling the distillery shop assistants and guides there, of our annoyance that the label neglects to state "Natural Colour" as well as not giving us enough information (or being deceptive) about cask maturation.
    My experience was that their reaction to these complaints was one of complete surprise and puzzlement as if it's the first time they have been told this! I found this utterly astonishing. Do the guys at Deanston not watch reviews of their products? Do they not read the nonsense printed on their bottle labels and wonder why they do not reflect the actual product? The guide proudly told me that you won't find a bottle of E150a anywhere in the distillery. They wouldn't dream of adding colourant! So, I replied, why don't they state this on the label?????? The guy reacted as if it was the first time someone had raised this issue.
    They have had years to correct this issue and have neglected to do so. I am sure there is a reason why Deanston do not state "Natural Colour" on their labels. I cannot think of what it could be though. It's all very suspicious.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  2 года назад

      It's always irritated me about the labelling of added colour (or lack of). If they don't, they should have pride enough to state it, and if the do add it, they should be forced by law to state it. Of all the laws in place around Scotch, Ill never understand why this consistently falls under the radar
