A tappy Guzzi is a happy Guzzi! They all do that Sir! As others have pointed out, the saddle is for the earlier generations of V7 models. The V7 850 is a completely different motorcycle and not many parts are interchangeable, and it is ever so easy to order the wrong item online. Quite a few parts are also different between the V7 850 Stone and V7 850 Special, so always worth treading carefully before buying anything. Enjoy your new bike! I had a v7III, just a heads up.. even if you get the valve clearances exactly the same on both sides intake and exhaust respectively, don't expect both sides to sound the same. I've never heard a BMW airhead or moto guzzi V-twin have the same volume or tone from each side of their cylinder heads/valve trains. I just think it's the nature of the beast when it comes to push rod actuated valve trains. With that said, maybe your intake and/or exhaust valve clearance is slightly wider on the side that you're hearing more tap from. IMO, nothing to worry about.

A couple of tips: A length of garden hose can serve as a great stethoscope for tracing noise. Stick your ear on one end of the hose and move the other end around various points on the vehicle
and it will help you detect where certain noises are coming from.
Secondly: If my mate's two Guzzis are anything to go by, the engines sound like a washing machine full of marbles even when in perfect fettle. The top ends in these things are renowned for the clatter and noise that they make. The early BMW's weren't much better, but the architecture of the Moto Guzzi just seems to amplify these sounds.
And they aren't sounds that you really associate with anything automotive, these days. Crikey, even Harley Davidson have whisper quiet hydraulic valve gear.
But the big thing is, there's nothing wrong with the bike. Adjusting the valves on those things is a regular service item. You can do it at home, easily, and when you have adjusted the valves, they'll still be noisy! They're Italian, after all!!!

    • @EvanBouche
      @EvanBouche 2 месяца назад +1

I second this! proud owner of a guzzi stornello, and it chops and bangs and pops and rattles, and every service item is up to date. It's a lovely experience.

  • @Simulera

Tinkering videos are a super good idea for you guys imo, this is a good one! It doesn’t have to be a professional (or “semi-pro”) tear-down rebuild of a “basket case” unobtainium classic or “barn find” to be interesting. There are a lot of those anyway. This is real and it’s fun. Others have said, so maybe irrelevant: The ticking sound, as best it gets recorded and reproduced on this computer, sounds like maybe the tappets. They are very accessible and easy to check/adjust on this engine and doing it as a matter of course when it seems necessary makes for a sort of new relationship with the bike. It’s fun and useful and highly recommended. There are YT videos that show the drill for that exact bike. I learned this on old /2 and /5 BMW airheads, but the Guzzi setup is even more accessible. If you check them and they’re in spec and they are still a little noisy, then that is fine. The sound of freedom, etc. As a modern Guzzi owner, I like the look you have going on there but personal experience is that I eventually almost always go back to stock. Normally this happens after a long-ish trip where I discover what trade-offs the engineers and designers had already figured out for me. There are a few counter-examples, having to do mostly with sometimes terrible aesthetics and trim in the 1980’s for all brands. In the 70’s there are different issues. Before that, well, nothing except Honda and friends was all that reliable so you could try anything and learn. Romance of memory aside, it’s much better now. And, of course, you got the wrong seat from Baak. Baak do make one for your model, according to the website. They even have a photo and the seat pan matches your correct black seat pan. It seems to be light-ish brown leather, so it will need a lot of frequent leather treatment care and will get a nice, aged and worn-in appearance, inevitably. Rain storms on a trip require in-the-field leather treatments. The cat can make a hash of it. You might leave a wrench in your back pocket and a line for posterity on the seat. Etc. The black one will still look new in 10 years, so it’s a matter of what a person likes. I sort of like aging brown in town and clean black with a rack. Fun, relaxing video with a Saturday morning coffee. Watching low intensity Guzzi fiddling is always better than the news. Asia trip was v interesting, good job!

Instead of going the full no db killer option Mistral sells a "race" db killer which is a good halfway point between db and no db. Also in regard to oil apparently according to forum gurus you never fill it to the full mark halfway between the two marks is the real "full" and beyond that it just gets sent up to the airbox. Just my 2 cents as a fellow V7 850 owner. Love the channel and looking forward to watching the V7 evolve.

I've just been watching The Bingley Wheeler, and the Guzzi is a very attractive proposition. A good tip for finding exhaust leaks, (especially around joints where nothing is visible), is to tear a strip of kitchen paper and, while the engine is running, pass it over the pipe without touching. Any gas leak will make the paper flutter. Also, for tracing mechanical noises, get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope. They look like a doctor's stethoscope, but instead of a bell, they have a metal probe. You press the probe against the engine, and it helps pinpoint, amplify, and identify sounds. For less than a tenner. Be warned though - the first time you use one, you'll think your engine is about to self-destruct! The cacophony you'll hear is frightening! (A screwdriver with the handle pressed against you ear can also be used.)

2 out of 3 items on the to-do list isn't bad! The bench seat is going to look great later.
Talking about Jaguars: I remember long ago in the US, a lot of XJ6 and XJ7 owners would swap the anemic OEM engine for a Chevy V8. Apparently it was a nearly direct-fit replacement. The great lines of the Jaguar made that extra work worthwhile. Likewise, I appreciate our more modern automotive technology, but the more traditional styling still looks better.

Hey Darcy, loving watching you customize the Guzzi. I have the exact same bike and with what is probably the same intermittent rattling noise on the right hand side. What I found was that placing my boot and pressing on the mid section of the exhaust on the heat shield stopped the rattling and then it started again when I released it so it may be that the sound is coming from slightly further up the exhaust. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to investigate further because I had an accident a week ago. Not my fault but hit a car that cut across the front of me as I was exiting a roundabout. Bike went down on the left side and has done damage to the head cover and cyclinder head and may be written off. I'm fine apart from some scraped knees. Would definitely recommend considering fitting some engine bars to protect the cyclinders as they are vulnerable because they stick out. All the best man

As for the seat I think you have the one for the old V7 750 and not the latest 850 model, hopefully they will swap it for you. Customising a Moto Guzzi is a very personal thing and it doesn't always appeal to the majority, I know I changed my Bellagio to look like a V7 and get conflicting comments, but the important thing is how it makes you feel.

Removing stickers - try using one of those washing-up spongy cleaners (not the abrasive side) soaked in white spirit. Leave it resting against the sticker for a while, and it'll just peel off.

Just a thought check that the right side spark plug cap isn’t arking across to the engine casing. This happened to me once on my triumph speed twin. NGK plug

hi Darcy , buy a good seat cover and stuff the cushion material inside it on your stock seat to make it bench seat ❤

My old v85 which is the same engine so I'm lead to believe had a flat spot around 2800rpm and somewhere else I've forgotten where, but after a booster plug no more flat spots and much better throttle response

i think BAAK is a french brand so you have to tell Bak like "back" but put the accent on the "a".
They have a good reputation, so i'm sorry and surprise the seat doesn't fit . they are based about 100kms in the south of my home, do you want that i go to kick their asses ? 🤣

The best looking V7 Special. I had a V7 Stone in black for a while but I kind of regret not paying the extra for the Special. Have you tried getting hold of a stock V7 Centenario seat as they come in brown..

Darcy that seat pan definitely is not right . have the same tail tiddy on my bike and had the same brake like for a while but changed it for a Motone Customs and kept the tail tidy .I changed it for what they call a Elderado in solid brass but it does come in black or silver and is also LED but made much nicer than the BAAK one. that one looks like a stamped thin steal it works of course just not as a quality piece as the Motone one and fits directly to the BAAK number plate bracket. I changed the switch gear on my Interceptor it wasn't hard most likely it's a similar set up two 9 pin connectors in your head light one for each side. Just needed to get those connectors and the the compressor tool handy to have cause you will need it again for mre upgrades to make factory style connections . Cheers Mate

Tapping noise is your valve gear. Check the valve clearances. I have the v7iii and they all make the same noise. Better the clearances are a little loser than manual spec. Nothing to worry about.
