Thank you for this video. You saved my day. I got a Honda Pilot SUV and I tried to install that rear camera. Your video showed a quick and easy way to install the rear camera instead of installing near the license plate. Thank you.
Excellent tips! Also, I have a lot of cable left over. I started from the rear hatch (before mounting) and then ran it up to the front dash. Like you, I took a front panel off and stuffed the remained cable in the space. Lastly, I hard wired both the dash cam and my radar detector to the fuse box. (I think the kit is 20 bucks on a famous website. Well worth it in my opinion.
Some good points there just as about to do an install, or at least have an install done. Several " Specialists" , including those on RUclips, all want to place the rear cam on the window. With defogging and tint, the front window is a thing too then, obviously. Lucky I cam across your video. Thanks.
I'm toying with the idea of mounting a full time back camera to see behind at any given moment. I'll be using the 12v outlet in my rear cargo area, of course, it has to be wireless unit . I need to mount it higher up than a normal backup camera. I'm considering the auto vox 7pro. This would also help when I'm carrying extra gear in an external basket which would block a normally positioned backup camera.
I have experienced that mounting rear camera on the vinyl trim board will fail in a very short time due to gravity and bouncing. The double-stick tape will give way, especially during very hot or very cold weather. I have not found a quality double-stick tape that works.
Try 3M VHB Bonding tape. Used it on lots of stuff for years and has never failed me. 90% of getting any tape to stick to a surface is surface prep and cleanliness. I use ~70% rubbing/denatured alcohol (same stuff those alcohol prep pads are wetted with) and scrub, scrub, scrub the mounting surfaces clean, dry with a clean dry cloth, then scrub and wipe again! Gotta get those years of Armor-All off those trim pieces!! I also always warm the tape and surfaces up with a blow drier. I’m currently using VHB 5952, but they have many other bonding tapes depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.
@@KurtofTrades Kurt, all you have to do is to wire it into one of the fuse slots that is powered only when the key is on. There are plenty of videos that help you identify which slots to use. Then use a piggyback fuse to access it. Much more elegant solution than having a cludgy power adaptor sticking out of the socket all of the time. Using this solution solves the concern that you expressed.
This is exact place I have mounted my to guard mirror dash cam. It does work in this place as at night time it’s lights up, but glares on the back window
@@KurtofTrades just got a viofo 129 plus duo, front and back camera. Just trying to figure out the best way to wire it up in my Crosstrek :) this is the only video I've found discussing wiring up the rear
Just run the wire in the rear hatch jamb, the foam seal shouldn’t hurt it. Easier than drilling, the camera would get dirty easily and need cleaning though
You can mount them on the rear window and use goo gone to remove the residue just fine. That is a horrible way to run the wire to the camera. Pulling off the panel above it and running the wire through the factory boot into the trunk area and out is the best way. No professional would run a wire outside a panel like that.
Just curious, why didn't you run always to the front then down to the footwell and from there to where ever your power is ? Also I have a red wire assuming its a power wire do you think that be fine to connect to a rear 12v outlet positive connection?
It would be fine, if you haven't done that yet. Most dash cams barely need a 5A fuse and you're probably not going to use your rear outlet that much so it's fine really :-)
Why nobody explain how to connect the red cable for the rear camera? Besides, it is short to bring it to the front to connect it to the fuses 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 I have washed like 50 videos already

Ps. I am a (ironically) techno-impaired senior aned can't find the money icon.
I've got a similar style dash cam that'll be installing and I never though about mounting on the trim itself. Great idea 👍
If only automakers fit them for you, no one would have to go through these troubles
Tesla does! Hopefully more do in the future I agree.
Not legal in some countries
If only the cameras on my car would allow me to record from them
He goes through these troubles because he does not know about fuse boxes.

Great info Kurt. You saved me at least 10 frustrating mistakes. Kudos.
Glad to help!
I don't have your car but my KIA has that same center console so I'm doing the same as you. Awesome idea. Thanks for the video.
Love it no wires hanging around good job
Did you use adhesive tape to mount the camera to the back of the tailgate?

Thanks please tell me about camry hybrid.2023 to install dashcam
Which tape to use for dashcam wires to tie around dash areas
I recommend starting from the rear dash camera and work your way up to the front
Inside that console if you take it out and have a small round file. File a small half circle at the bottom of the plastic and will be easier and tidy.

Mines been on there for 2 years without issues, make sure you clean the area good and apply it during warm weather.

Curious as to why you didn’t hard wire it to your fuse panel?
I’m not concerned with things happening while it’s parked and it has a parking guard feature
Also it can sit fit a week at a time so don’t want to drain battery

That’s true, don’t feel like messing with the electrical and it doesn’t bother me though.
wire is still exposed. it could have routed through the gromet.

Is this a normal front facing cam installed at the rear?
What length USB cable did you use here?
Not positive as I don’t have it anymore. It’s probably 10-12’. Most newer cams have a longer one though.

Wow thank you!
If it's a *dash* cam it's not a rear cam. And no I'm not fun at parties 😂
I wish they showed a vid of putting the rear on the outside.

Hello thanks for this helpful video, could anyone please recommend a good rear dashcam 😀
Check out my playlist for dash cams, I really like the Surfola sf710
Thank you that looks easy and simple. Trying to buy a dash cam with all 3 views/miles as well.
Any recommendations??
Which 3 views do you mean? Most are just front and rear. I just reviewed the surfola sd710 you can find the review on my channel I really like it.
Well done 👍
I can’t mount my rear cam to my Nissan Cube cz the rear door opens side ways.
Hmm might have to mount it on the side or run the wire along where the hinge is first. Gl

I did mine this way, was kind of tough but at the end is better
Looking for a video to avoid mistakes just like that. Why bother so much to not to use the factory cable guides (rubber gromets)?
How did you attach the actually rear camera to the plastic panel of the trunk’s door?
It came with a 3m sticky pad. Worked very well.!

Didn’t have enough wire to go that far and don’t need it on while I’m parked. Not sure on the positive wire.

Solar portable charger maybe?
Why is acting like every car is the same not everyone has a Honda crv😆🤦♂️
Most cars that are hatchback style. Not everyone has the skills to extrapolate information from context clues
