- The all-new 5 Series is here and like BK you can have it your way. Four cylinders, six cylinders, no cylinders - BMW’s midsize sedan lineup is as robust as ever including this first-ever fully electric model, it too available in 3 flavors but none as exhilarating as this. Meet the i5 M60 - a nearly 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive, high-performance EV that’s so quick and deliciously futuristic it’ll leave electric car naysayers speechless.
MSRP as-tested: $98,000

Great video as always Steve!
Thank you!
I love ev's but this is a toy. The interior is like every other bmw - no design risks, no interesting materials... Just 2 big screens and ambient lighting. I think in the next 10 years we're going to see luxury EVs have to do more than just put in a couple of big screens and ambient lighting and call it a day. There's just not enough here to justify that cost.
Couldn’t agree more. I’m sure the build quality is there however its interior and exterior design is a disappointment.
Where as I do not understand this at all. At least average in most luxury areas and a drive train that is so powerful, with smooth and near instantaneous responsiveness. Nearly as fast as an E63 for $30k less more refined and is cheap to run while not chunking large of amounts of CO2 out the exhaust. An amazing machine. I guess if you want to compare it to imaginary cars from 2034 it may fall short.
I don’t want a bunch of EV lovers to pounce. I’m not anti-EV. This car’s fail is range. Until you make them where they get 400 miles on a charge, these are boutique purchases. That’s reality friends. Nothing wrong with the price, tech etc.
Agreed. The base Model S outperforms this is acceleration AND range (it has 405 miles).
When I fill up my '20 M5 competition it sometimes says 420 miles, and I drive it like it's meant to be driven.
EV owner and potential buyer (tomorrow) of one of these. The only downside to this is that it has less range than my 2015 P85D did at 9 years old, and FAR less than my 2024 Q8 Etron, which I don’t love, but for lots of different reasons that don’t include range.
It's biggest flaw comes from it not being a purpose built EV, lacking a front trunk and some general packaging that could allow for a much better experience. For the price you can also get considerably more power, which is one of the only reasons to choose an EV in the first place.
Best review
Steve, you looked like you had more fun with this car than any other car i have seen you review ha!
So much fun!!
I really like the I5M60. Just waiting to see what issue are address in year or so to see if it’s more reliable than the ICE versions especially those with V8. All the plastic engines parts causing more harm than necessarily needing to.
This vehicle is hard to describe how exciting it is to experience. It reminded me of when I first drove a Tesla Model S Performance back in 2014.
It’s an incredible experience
“If you are an acceleration junkie, you’re not going to beat this.”
Model S Plaid would like a word.
Plaid is good in a straight line but handling is awful . This i5 M60 with M pro package suspension destroys it
What he said!
@@rKellyPeesOnYou8815 @stevehammes
I would encourage you to go watch the Nurburgring footage and re-evaluate that assumption. :)
@@DrewFu319 The difference in speed is such a small piece of the overall picture. The M60 is plenty fast (you really don't need anymore speed than it has, unless you have a small penis), but what really makes the M60 leaps above Tesla is all the stuff that really matters. Fit and finish, ride quality, cabin quietness, no squeaks and rattles, and the technology. BMW leans in on Apple CarPlay where it's non-existent on Tesla, Apple CarKey is super convenient and also missing on the Tesla. I like that the car is still a traditional sedan, I have a turn signal stalk! I still struggle with the look of the rear end, and of course I could use more range, but for a first electric 5 series, BMW did a pretty fantastic job.
Actually, you don’t even need a Plaid. The base Model S Long Range has more range and acceleration than this BMW.
I agree with another commenter, in this category of premium sport luxury just get a Lucid. Haha, Xanadu, that white bubble house near Disney…I think they tore it down a while back.
I read that they did but that’s cool you remember it!
A well crafted review at the goldilocks duration of 6 minutes, is more proof that Hammes TRULY puts the 'EV' in SteVE!
Ha!!!! Thanks, man.
You say there is less that can go wrong with an EV......how many batteries are there and how many connections do they have? Every single one of them can be a failure point and we know batteries suddenly die because of that.
Not hating EVs but they still need to advance to become a viable option to ICE vehicles.....especially price wise.
I’ve owned an electric car now for over three years. I know other people that have electric cars. I honestly can tell you that I don’t know a single one of us that has had a battery issue. As a matter of fact, I have never brought my vehicle in for any non-routine service and even that has only included tire changes for the season
Beautiful car!
Nice car. But no EV for me.
At some point the battery pack on EV’s will need to be replaced. When that occurs the cost to replace them will likely be more than what the vehicle is worth. This is not a car to pass down to your children or keep in the family. It is a deeply impressive disposable object.
How much is a new N63 engine?
@@stevehammes You make a good point, but you’re betting that I’m going to have to get a new gasoline engine. I drive a Lexus GX. It will last a very long time. ALL EV’s will absolutely need new battery packs.
Buyers/lessees of these cars will not keep them for the 10yrs the battery is warranted. It’s an irrelevant point, at least for the original owner. By ten years, recycling tech will have matured, and a replacement battery will be under $10k; much cheaper than a replacement ICE.
BMW invited me to a test event of this car. Oh it’s FAF! But when we rolled back into the dealership, the car smelled like burnt toast.
I'm not saying it's a bad car, clearly it's beautiful, but the Model S is like 4700 lbs if I'm not mistaken and has a 100kw/hr battery. WIth such a heavy car, I'd hoped it would have a bigger battery and range.
Fair.
@@stevehammes That's quite a reply to get from an esteemed journalist! THANKS! :) - For the record, I teach German and my first German town was Munich so I'm predisposed to love anything from BMW.
@@davids1816Awesome! I’m from German heritage but can’t speak a word 🤦🏼♂️
Actually, you are going to beat that, even with the base Model S Long Range, which is both quicker and has substantially more range.
I’ll take this any day of the week.
@@stevehammes don’t get me wrong, I do like the i5 a lot! I have owned lots of BMW’s but was just pointing out that the Model S has better numbers, which candidly matter quite a bit more in the EV world, especially range. 250 vs 400 isn’t even competitive.
Best looking EV yet. Thanks for the review.
😂😂😂😂
Truly amazing how good cars can be today! Nice review Steve!
Agreed! Thanks.
I'd have an i5 over an EQE or EQS any day, but I'm still a fan of the Audi RS e-Tron GT. However, if I lived in the US, I'd have a Lucid Air!
You’d rather buy from an unproven startup with no local service over a BMW? And I’ve driven the Air…seemed like a neat car. Didn’t like it as much as this.
@@stevehammes In short, yes. There's an elegance about the Air that is lacking in other BEVs. The interior of the Air looks better to me, and the range is better. The Lucid is something different and unique, and I really appreciate that.
Agreed. The Lucid Air would be a better choice here. Top Gear certainly agrees.
That weight in a supposed Performance car turns me off.
Until you drive it. 😉
@@stevehammes there's no way it's more fun to drive than an ICE performance vehicle, say the CT5V. Is it? 🤔
What is BMW's design team thinking? This looks awful.
I like their design direction. But even if you don’t, you have to admit BMW is taking boring out of the equation. And this color is 💯
@@stevehammesI agree. BMW actually redesigned this generation 5 Series. The previous two generations looked very similar to each other. It always takes a while for new designs to grow on people.
@@stevehammesI think the designers want people to talk about BMW.
So far they are do well.
This car is aweful in person and the interior has fallen victim to cost cutting. And yes spent time behind the wheel of a $92000 i5 M60. That car ain’t worth that money.😂
Love this car, it’s super nice in person.
Great review as always. As an i5 m60 owner the car and be driven efficiently or like a maniac. Those that say this is a toy, microwave, stupid car. Will be left with there mouth open in disbelief.
Thanks for sharing
Just get a Lucid Air……what’s the point about this BMW, not even a purpose built EV…..engineering laziness
I can think of many reasons I’d rather buy an EV from a legacy brand than a startup. And I’ve driven the Lucid. How are those Fisker Ocean buyers feeling right about now?
Lucid is certainly a good option
@@stevehammesbut you can say when it comes to EVs the legacy automakers are still playing catch up.
Lazy engineering? They planned it to accommodate multiple propulsion systems so that they can sell cars no matter what people prefer. Seems smart to me.
BMW is profitable. We'll see if Lucid is around in any form in the next few years.
@@Thunderbolt-ws7qm making cars that are both ICE and EV compatible makes them worse of both worlds. They sacrifice passenger space and cargo space to fit batteries and stuff.

3.7, not as fast as Tesla model Y or 3 Performance models- yet they are much cheaper…
I’d much rather have a BMW for multiple reasons.
One being to spend more cash…
Looks like a Honda accord
Not even close to the boring bar of soap that is the new Accord.
Lol do you even know your cars!!???
