re: "cars don’t operate in the same environment". exactly there is no "BIG SKY THEORY" to be found at ground level, in fact it's the VERY OPPOSITE. thus when we are finally able to look back on this with hindsight acting as "20-20", even the most ardent Tesla supporters will be forced to acknowledge that FSD was one of biggest "Ponzi Schemes" in History and that they had been DUPED (yes coming to this realization will be difficult and will likely hurt the Ego).

Mercedes/Bosch's system is closer to an autopilot than Tesla's assisted cruise control...which is why I bought the Mercedes instead of a Tesla. Tesla cut corners big-time with sensors and cameras.
Re: Autopilot, I'll give credit where it's due. I have >150,000 miles with Bosch Mobility Solutions' best tech on my car. I know what it is capable of, more importantly, I know what it's not capable of. It's FAR more capable than any airplane autopilot I've used. I currently have a GFC600 in my plane. And it'll track a course, but isn't anywhere near as sophisticated as what I have in my car. At the same time, I don't have to deal with road debris, unpredictable drivers, pedestrians, and other hazards typically found on the ground. That said, I've also had to abort takeoffs for alligators, turtles, and otters...

ladies and gentlemen breaking news...!!! Lithium Ion Batteries are DANGEROUS AF so if the multitude of catastrophic fire events that have occurred now in just the last 5 years across all form factors from small to large, from fixed to mobile, on Air on Land and even Sea (ref: Felicity, ref: Fremantle) doesn't convince us of this...? then what it means (in no uncertain terms) is that we are unfortunately in DENIAL (uh oh)...
that's right because as we are witnessing in real-time, just when we think "it's safe to go back in the water" (ref: Jaws circa 1975) what we are hit with is YET ANOTHER headline news story from somewhere on the Earth. what this is telling us is, rather than the problem being solved by Man's usual cleverness, ingenuity and making it go away...? no, the problem is instead ESCALATING and GETTING WORSE, and it's happening in "direct proportion" to Man's efforts at "ramping up" Cell Production.

As a retired long distance truck driver, I have some thoughts .
Firstly , I think the Tesla alleged good record that musk often brags about is bunkis , because most people are doing the right thing and watching what the car is doing while on cruise or Autopilot, and I suspect you would find if no humans where in the teslas while on Autopilot they would be crashing with much more frequency.
The phantom braking is still a problem , we have a Tesla in the family, and it has happened twice, the last time I was driving at freeway speeds , I pulled out to overtake a slightly slower car as did the big rig behind me and the Tesla decided to chuck on the brakes for no apparent reason , fortunately I over ride the brakes and hit the throttle and avoided being road kill.
I reported this to the family member that owned the car who reported it also occurred while he was driving it .
The big problem with calling driver autopilot when it is really driver assist which is what it really is , the problem is that when things go good and smoothly for a while, people get a false sense of security, they get bored , their mind wanders , humans do not do well if they are not fully invested in doing a task , in other words , you cannot half drive a car.
And as a long distance driver I have expertise in this area , fatigue , not paying attention , dwindling alertness relying on a computer controlled driving system that is not even close to foolproof is a disaster waiting to happen.

@@grayrabbit2211 I would argue that it is the car. At high speeds its not that easy to take back control of the vehicle once the it has made a major mistake. Self driving cars, auto brake-systems, cruise controls which automatically maintain distance, are all known to brake for absolutely nothing. Causing getting crashed from the rear.
Every ride i turn the "brake-assist" off in the lease 2021 Toyota. Because of constant false LOUD alarms and occasionally starts braking if people approach the road and the stupid computer thinks your gonna crash. While you can see, the other person saw you and is braking (bicycle). Very dangerous with traffic behind you! The automatic seatbelt tries to strangle you at every single round-a-bout because every single time it things you gonna crash. Still thinking about just to pull the fuse so i do not have to release the seatbelt during driving so i can breath again.
    Computers+thinking = CRASH
"But aircraft have auto pilots for many years", those people leave out a those autopilots do not have to cope with: curbs, round-a-bouts, trees, cars, cars, bicycles, winding strange road designs, holes (in the road), pedestrians etc. etc. etc. etc. And are shut down the second something unexpected happens.

Excellent video but I have one quibble, but it is significant. At 3:39 you say "input from an imperfect environment". There is no imperfect environment, there is only the environment. Whether the car is driven fully by a driver or it is automated to some degree, the driver or the automation can only get input from the environment. The "imperfection" you refer to is just the characteristics of that environment. The driver or the automation must deal with all these characteristics or imperfections.

If I was a Tesla customer who bought FSD, I would sue Tesla for manipulation of critical information for marketing purposes. The word "Full" in "Full Self-Driving" suggests that the system is designed to manage the entire driving experience, from start to finish, across various conditions and environments, which is a pure lie and Tesla's FSD is only on Level 2 of autonomous driving, which REQUIRES driver's attention ALL THE TIME! I call it "Fool self-driving" for a reason. I couldn't believe the Apple engineer who died in a self-crash didn't check what FSD really means.

You'll find that in buying a Tesla (or any other vehicle with this type of technology) the conditions of sale prevent any lawsuits just because the vehicle tries to kill or maim you or others. Someone recently bought a Tesla Cybertruck, but found it wouldn't fit in his parking space; tried to sell it but Tesla said they'd charge him $50,000, since the terms of the contract said he had to keep it for at least a year (there were other terms that were bad too.) A computer can't multitask, it can switch very fast between tasks. About the rear ending an EV, i had a couple of situations on my motorbike with a Tesla that was braking very hard to meet the stopping point Also i noticed that some Tesla's switch on the brake lights very late because the use regen braking. EV's are unsafe unless the "drive assistants" are switched off and a real person is driving the car.

I think the high incident rate for self driving vehicles is likely due to unnecessary braking. I have 2 cehicles with Adaptive Cruise Control. On sharp curves they will sense the guard rail and slow down. While driving on a multi-lane road, on curves they will sense vehicles in the other lanes and unnecessarily slow down.
Neither a safe thing to do or very fuel efficient.

They wanted some fonts to be bigger and two icons named differently. That all. This is updated by over the air software update. However, news media like yourself made it big deal stating all Tesla vehicles are recalled over safety issues on auto pilot software.
Even in this accident, the police are not sure it it was put on auto pilot or Full Self Drive and they are investigating that. All drivers you are using FSD are given many warnings to stay alert and keep hands on the steering wheel to take over anytime

I always hate it all these stupid catch phrases that these people come up with just to make a sale.

I was told I would have a flying car. I never asked or wanted a self-driving car, I like to drive.
I never asked for an electric car either, but that's just motor-head me.
As if the initial unrestricted artificial intelligence models didn't go full misanthropic racist when left to their own learning, machines have no soul and can not make life's decisions for you.

Why are autopilot cars legal? If you can't just drive a car, then don't.

Stupid people should be mandated to being piloted by taxi cabs, public transit, or their own two feet. Put the EV toys away; leave the driving to those people who have purpose on the road (traveling to work, giving lifts to school children, or the elderly, etc.), those who are conscious, moral, and know they don't want to die, or heaven forbid injure others. The EV gimmick is dying out as the market is proving. Go woke go, err, sorry, I mean, go EV go broke! Strength! GODsp33d!

They used to have these guys. You would call a phone number, & these guys in cars would come to where you were & you could ride in their car they would take you wherever you wanted as long as you payed the fare. They liked to drive around in yellow cars. They were called taxis. Then came Uber, now supposedly "self-driving" cars.
With Uber, you get into some creepy weirdo stranger's car & get taken somewhere, possibly to where you want to go. Or, you can spend the tidy sum of more than you make in a year, to buy your own robot car that likes to catch on fire, or run over people, or smash into things.

These cars are dangerous and in my community working with leaders to ban self driving. Just no need for any of that mess. Bad enough the batteries can combust and burn insanely.

Autopilot should be programmed to automatically disengage whenever emergency vehicles or strobing lights are detected in the vicinity. There’s no good reason to allow a computer to navigate those situations.

I disagree that "self driving cars/trucks are here to stay." They were and are a bad idea, and crashes caused by these vehicles won't stop happening. Insurance companies will raise the cost of insuring these deadly devices until no one will buy them, if local & state authorities don't ban them first for being a hazard to human life. Most of this technology is on EVs, so crashes also raise the additional problem of the battery pack exploding into flames which can't easily be extinguished. End the madness, don't allow them!

Tesla is deliberately misrepresenting the abilities of the autopilot system. Too many of their drivers ignore the risks and use it without any monitoring. It’s not like there isn’t any publicity about it. I hope the driver in this case is prosecuted to the whole extent of the law. And I agree with others below that it is amazing the the law hasn’t caught up with this beta testing on public roads. It is just unacceptable.

I hate to see it on the news and also on youtube, when someone says Autopilot is not autopilot and self driving cars can't see in the rain...etc... THAT IS TOTAL BS.
The most recent Tesla hardware has 5 megapixel Samsung cameras that see in near 0lux conditions and the system isn't based "on a computer", it's an artificial brain that's capable of making much faster decisions than humans. There's no ~200ms lag. Most of the "testers" are experiencing zero intervention drives today and the system gets a lot better every 2 weeks.
Most crashes happen because of misuse OR with old hardware Model S cars, which have much worse cameras and jut the old nVidia chips. That system shouldn't be allowed to activated. BUT for some reason it's not legal to take away features from customers.

If the technology "forces" you to look at the road & touch the wheel, is it really autopilot? I do agree that the paid subscription is very close.

You lost me at "...system isn't based "on a computer", it's an artificial brain...". It is a computer, not a brain. AI software still runs on a computer. It's not Elon's "semi-sentient" marketing BS. Let's face it FULL SELF DRIVING and so-called autopilot are marketing terms and do not reflect the capabilities that their names suggest. Why call something FULL SELF DRIVING when it's still in BETA? Makes no sense. It is blatant false advertising but Elon is immune from such things.
