Absolutely you can. This is not necessarily just a LEGO problem but a human problem. The problem with things and collecting them is the tendency for most of us to never be satisfied with what we have. And the reason we are never satisfied is that in the end, the things we possess don’t lead to lasting happiness. Having hobbies definitely has its place and is not wrong. But any hobby can soon become like that saying about boat owners “The two happiest days are when you buy a boat and when you get rid of the boat.” Challenge is finding joy in what you have and that’s where bring creative (the true intent with LEGO) can more so lead to happiness than simply stockpiling LEGO. I think I qualify as an expert on that opinion

@@DrJakesVeryBritishReviews Then buy used sets so you don't have to open your sealed sets. As for owning too much Lego Jake, you really need to put it into perspective i.e why you bought those sets. You gave a good example with your collection of Minifigs, I think it's very cool to try and get all of the sets of Minifigs that you want to have in your collection based on themes that you like but not so cool when you buy Lego sets (that are outside of your liked themes simply for the sake of it because it was a bargain - that's when it becomes a false purchase, the lack of self control over your wallet.

I've really been struggling with this myself. It's not only Lego, I also build model kits and collect props, costumes and other TV/movie memorabilia. It's getting very difficult to make space and display these things properly. Especially the large items. I've really had to cut back on what I buy or aquire. The first thing I think of now is, "But where am I going to put it?". It's made me extremely picky on what I get now.

I am 23. I was getting LEGO every now and then since I was 4! I recently got out of my dark age that lasted about 6 years with one small lego dimensions set.
So naturally, 17 years of collecting left me with loads of LEGO in my room. The difference between LEGO and other toy brands, is that no matter what, you never get rid of it. My mom threw away some of my old toys that were broken, and given away what had a some value to charity.
But my LEGO is so special to me and I still have every single brick from when I was little. And that is exactly why you should mind what sets you buy - if you get attached to them too much to give them away, they will eventually take up a lot of space that you will never free up. You should buy only the sets that you think that will appeal to you as long as you own them. Sets that have some meaning to you, not sets that are "on sale", or "look nice", because one day you will forget about them. But if you buy a set that really makes you happy for the imagination and creativity (and story) behind it, it will always make you happy to look at it!
So you can own too much LEGO, unless you really hold dear every single piece. (Its kind of like love. There are pretty girls out there, but there is only one that you truly love for everything she is)

They did the same thing with the 42068 Airport Rescue thing. It's incredibly frustrating. I should have sorted all the parts by color at the outset, but I didn't. I'm halfway thru the build, and am now going to sort them. There've been some single steps that took 15 minutes to complete because of searching for parts. I bought it so my daughter and I could build it together, but it's 99% searching for parts, so she lost interest. I'm finishing it myself now :(

Once you start building MOCs, sets become rather tedious and limited as a build experience I’ve discovered. I do like building some classic 80s/90s sets for nostalgia value, but wouldn’t display them - dismantle and add to the collection.
However, I do have a massive unsorted pile of bricklink orders and half disassembled MOCs that haven’t made it back into the sorted drawers... and space is still a huge issue... so yes it’s possible to have too much if it is overwhelming your space and you are buying compulsively without actually putting it to use...

  • @keywacat

'I' do not have too much Lego, but I've started throttling back on the pieces I give my daughter. I hit a point where she had quite enough to play with happily and anything more will start to overwhelm her. So it's down to introducing special pieces as nice touches / enhancements on vehicles and buildings she has, and only 1 new mini-figure every few weeks.

I agree that it is possible to have too much lego. I have accumulated quite a few legos from getting lots for birthdays and holidays, having my brothers and cousins collections passed down to me, and just generally being obsessed with legos for most of my life. However, since I have so many that i rarely use (because they take up so much space and take forever to put away) this Christmas i have asked for no legos. I can relate to the sense of "I have to buy it"! Whatever it is LEGO is doing, it's brilliant! They are creating a sense of "need" where there - in reality - is none. Of course, it's probably related to a wider consumer-tendency in western society overall - so there is that. But, I can relate. I think you can have too much LEGO like you can have too much of anything. The line, I think, goes between getting something because you want it and getting something because you need it. If the "want" for LEGO has shifted to a "need" for LEGO, you are probably getting it for the wrong reason I think. Personally, I try to only get the stuff I'm really interested in which is why I pass up some very good deals once in a while. Here in Denmark, the stores will regularly have 20-35% discounts on LEGO sets. I could have gotten most of the ninjago sets - including the ship and docks at 20-35% off. But I didn't - it doesn't interest me. And, I think that's the key to talking about having too much LEGO. If you buy something because you think it's cool and you want it, it's probably okay. If you are getting LEGO sets just because it's a good deal, you've probably got more than enough. Hope that makes sense :-D

It can depend on time, meaning as long as you can set a little time to completing a set, of course putting the most important things first, then time is not a problem. But you also have to consider space. Do you have a whole room to put your sets or do you have closet space mostly full of clothes? Another thing to consider is money. If you or your parents have a lot of extra money from allowance or a job, and you see a set you like then you could get it. But if you're have a small amount of money, then it is suggested you put it towards something else. Another point to consider is your position as a lego customer. Are you a collector or a mocist? I myself believe I don't have enough lego, since I'm a mocist, I have a lot of saved up money, I have enough space, but time is a bit dependable

I have sort-of decided to limit my Lego collecting to avoiding any licensed or branded material (e.g. Star Wars, Speed Champions, etc.) and stick to sets with "yellow-faced" minifigs in them. I've made a small exception with the Lego Movie sets though... I'm not sure one can have too much Lego, but one can have too much of the wrong Lego...

I think buying Lego for the sake of having Lego models destroys the concept of "I create". I think it starts being too much when you sit down to build something (freestyle, not from the instructions) and you're not restricted by the pieces you have, that you just have a perfect piece for everything you can imagine. When you're restricted it forces you to be creative, and that's what I think the perfect amount of Lego is. Then again I'm no collector, I value Lego as a medium of creation, so even though I have some 100 minifigs I don't care much about displaying them.

I agree, however, I have compensated by switching to MOC builds...especially, a lego train set. It involves two areas of theme...1) buying parts to construct my original builds and 2) the idea that the layout will really never be finished only ever evolving. This ensures that I can resist some of the issues you mention. There is also the issue of space you pointed out. If I had continued buying set after set, I would be neck-deep in sets. With the layout, and can even customize it for holidays, work and rework ideas...even add some Lego builds like the modulars.

I just play with 3 series, city, creator and classic. Cheapest one most but the most enjoyable moment is when I am playing with my niece. We just keep building and destroying and having tons of fun for hours. Althought I know that it would come to an end when she grows up, I would just enjoy this time until I cannot play with her any more

  • @desecrator81

Well, in theory the intended use of lego is to play with it and not to collect it. I am mostly into Lego Technic. When a new set is released I have to realize that I can build the same set with my current lego pieces that I already have. Even if some vital piece is missing then I can order them on bricklink. (Which is way cheaper than buying the whole set for the sake of a few pieces)

  • @diannemarierivera5565

I also think the same way. I have my own sets which I haven't touched yet at all because I worry about space or where you put it up. I even ended up dettaching the pieces those I've already built out so as to have them stored properly. Yet when I see a set offered way too low I am always tempted to buy it. I really envy those who have a designated place to put up all of their sets. 😔

I’ve been on the same boat lately. I’m currently a student, but last summer was my first time working full time, so I have a lot of disposable income even after my budget for university. There are currently so many lego sets I want to buy, including the x-wing, the quidditch set, battle packs, etc.
The problem is I am currently out of space, and while I can simply take apart sets I currently have on display, it just doesn’t feel right since all the sets I currently have on display I got in the last year, which for me is very recent. I still have a little bit of space for some small sets, I definitely don’t have enough room for the big anticipated star wars line coming out next year for the 20th anniversary.

I saw a video a while ago (I think it was from 'Beyond the Brick' and one part of a series where they visited AFOLs at their homes) with a guy who had SO MUCH Lego ... his whole house was filled with it. Literally... there was Lego everywhere. He was buying bricks in large quantities and didn't even have the time to sort them anymore. And then he showed his building table in his cellar ... that was the tiniest table I'v ever seen and it wasn't used.
That guy wasn't buying bricks because he wanted to build with them ... he was addicted buying Lego - and never satisfied no matter how much he bought.
So yeah, you definitely can have too much Lego and in my oppinion, many AFOLs have such addiction problems, whether it be 'having to buy if it's a special offer' or 'can't get enough bricks'.

I have to much Lego. I am almost out of space to store all the sets I buy and I don't have the time and space to build all my sets. I just started to build 4956 which I got from my girlfriend three years ago and last month I have built the brickbank which was sitting in my basement for two years. I have a Super Star Destroyer in the package like Lego send it to me a few years ago and now I think selling it would make more sense then building it. I would recommend building all the lego you own before buying more if you feel you have too much. Then once you have all built you can decide what you liked the most and plan future purchases accordingly. Maybe you should take up moc building. I have enough LEGO as well. Half of my room is occupied by my collection (mostly Star Wars) and I am satisfied with it. I have everything I really wanted, missing only maybe an X-wing and a Millenium Falcon.
I'm a big fan of Disney Star Wars, so these sets aren't interesting for me.
Harry Potter is another thing, but I have a Hogwarts set and a Burrow set and that setup looks nice enough.
It does help that I've moved to anime and action figures, and now I only collect those. They don't require assembly (timesave) and take up less space than a big lego set like an AT-TE Walker (space save).

Thanks for the comments. I’m in the same situation. There are sets in my closet from two or three years ago. I’ve had to come to terms with either building or selling, the majority of the time doing the latter. Storage space and time are the big factors that play into this. But, I’m still buying! It’s often difficult not to buy when vendors offer such great deals (especially 40% and 50% off). These sales used to be rare, but now that the market is saturated the stores have no other choice but to heavily discount the sets just to move them. Sorry to get off topic, but I think LEGO will regret what they’ve done in this respect.

I think all your points are quite wise and your decision is according to me the best one. Stopping buying LEGO doesn't mean you are not an AFOL anymore. You may need to dive into the phase where you just enjoy LEGOS you already have with the boxes you showed. So enjoy your xmas with those which are absolutely awesome. And if you really, I mean, really want to have something under the tree, buy a small Lego box as the starwars one you showed just to have the feeling to unbox something at xmas day. Beside that you're all good.
Then about the lack of space you can indeed, sell old boxes at a good price on ebay so you can renew your collection and keep enjoy buying to the new incoming box that will be released. You can make a sort of a turn over Lego boxes.
