As someone who used to have legitimate LEGO sets as a kid, I just tried out other LEGO clones this year. So far, I liked the military sets that are churned out by GUDI and Kazi as LEGO won't venture in that genre anyway. Will try to buy Enlighten's sci-fi tanks and Xingbao's tavern at the end of the year.
In my opinion, calling very creative brands like Cobi or Mega Bloks rip offs of Lego is just stupid since they make their own sets with their own ideas. However, brands like lepin are rightfully rip offs.
Thank you. I am trying to make a clone and droid army, but LEGO is so expensive. I have to resort to these off brands because I can barely afford the smaller LEGO sets.
In now 2021 most of the mentioned companies are not cloning anymore. They have better models, higher brick quality, prints instead of sticker sheets and a much lower price than Lego. In 2021 Lego is almost dead imo as they don't have any good ideas anymore and they are much too expensive.
Mega Blocks and it new brand Mega Construx are awesome in their minifigs, the quality of the plastic is so different but the mold is awesome, Halo and Call of Duty sets are my favorite. Form a clone brand of LEGO, i prefer a brand that can made Star Wars Battle Droid to create a big army in a cheaper way than looking for LEGO original droids in México... Just to understand... Somebody sells the packets with all the bricks needed to build the 10221 super star destroyer just saying "With this bricks you can build 10221 Super Star Destroyer" is it legal or not? You can download the instruction directly from the Lego Website.
If I get a parts list from a Lego kit then get all the parts from Brinklink, does that make me a bad guy since Lego wont see any of my money and I will still have a genuine Lego kit?
Kevin Peterson not a bad person, but a clever one, that way you will end up with a quality construction without flaws that will hopefully cost you less that what you would pay for the original complete set, it’s like buying a used Mercedes, the company doesn’t get the money (unless buying from a merc dealer) but you still get a great quality car for a better price than what it would cost to buy brand new, if you brought a Chinese made clone of say the C class it probably wouldn’t drive as well, and certainly would not have the build quality or reliability.

I just got some Sembo sets, mainly flowers, and they are great - excellent quality, unique molds, very cool. And Loz is now my new favourite non-lego company - I just fell in love with their designs & mini brick format (3/4 of the lego size). But microbricks are too small for me.
Sluban's buses are excellent tho. I own their blue bus, as well as the big School Bus. I also have a bus from Enlighten. I used Sluban's bus doors for my LEGO Bendy Bus MOC.
Loz City sets and figures are incredible. They have a lot of original pieces made exclusively for them. I also have a Wolverine figure with Loz nanoblocks (700 pieces) and it looks awesome.
SamuraiMotoko Actually I don’t hate any other brand that is not Lego. Whilst I support Lego I recognise when other brands make their own sets or when they make fake sets based on what Lego makes. There is a difference between making your own ideas for sets then just copying what another company makes.
Some would choose Lego since it is the original and some just buy these alternatives but I don't really care whether they are fake or not as long as you have the skills.
Brickarms in the US is a very good company. They make different weaponry that is compatible with LEGO figures and they make a lot of different military sets. Sadly they are very overpriced but if u want an awesome military set I think it might be worth it.
I love cobi and they have a great selection of the ww2 era and ww1 something lego doesn't but in xingbao's case.....I mean if they make discontinued sets or stuff along those lines and you can't afford the original ones then sure I'd buy some and slowly replace them for original ones
Super great review. I am a LEGO purist but also very curious about the general developement amongst the competitors. Quality aside, it would be far easier to just MOC in a mix of whatever contruction toy that is compatible. No need to distinguish between brands, just mix them all together. I foresee this trend coming. All that is needed is a name for it.
XingBao are still likely violating LEGO design patents on individual elements since they just clone the parts rather than design them from scratch. For example, if they use certain types of arches and modified bricks that are more complex than just the original brick system.
I think it's actually a stronger case since they have actual design patents in place, but the set designs are only more loosely protected by copyright. LEGO also has a patent on the use of numbered bags to assist in assembly !!?? Some patents that granted are indefensible though. I am wondering why lot of people don't like the mini figures, I prefer them even to the Lego ones, because they have a lot of different faces which aren't so similar like the Lego figures and they even have more "realistic" legs and arms! :)
Honestly, while not LEGO compatible, nanoblocks are by far the best. They are their own tiny building blocks of high quality and designs. Sometimes sold through Schleich or Kamada . Loz is a cheaper version of nanoblocks, but have some unique designs nano does not make.
I used to be a Lego fan. But I hated that they never did military sets. So after looking for quite some time. I found Cobi, something I wanted. I have a big Cobi collection now. It's fun
