Incredible that Gadd is still learning after all these years. If you notice the beginning of this solo, he is practicing displacement ideas. He spoke about this in a recent interview he did with Rick Beato. He spoke about how during the pandemic, the 15 minute warmups he used to do prior to gigs ended up turning into hours and hours. This is how he came up with Messing around with displacement and a newfound way of playing the drums. He seemed super enthused about learning more. Just unreal!
I would go as far to say that if your mindset is that you dont have anything to learn, then you will never be truly good at something. The process of learning/reading never ends. Never.
Sir Gadd could be playing gold rims, black rims, or trash cans & he would still make them sing. Like everyone has commented, he had it all creativity, musicaility, timing, etc. He's got "Gaddola"! A lesson & a joy to listen to every time.
Incredible. I love Steve's rudimental style, and he's so fluid and rhythmic. This is what a Master delivers as a drum solo - something you can groove to.
The greats always amaze me with the attention to the space between the notes as well. It's not just the pure chops and notes around the drums with the feel and the beats-it's all about when NOT to play that creates the difference between the real musicians and the guys who fill up the bars with notes. Thanks for sharing this.
Depuis le temps il n’y a rien eu de mieux. Steve est musical et ça donne envie, il est aussi compréhensible quand il joue, comme si nous parlions tous la même langue. Il reste et restera le boss, merci Steve. 😊🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😉
If we truly listen to the music he makes, it doesn’t take long to realize that he is one with his instrument. Whether he is playing quickly and loud or slow and soft it doesn’t matter because his thoughts and feelings that are inside are constantly being expressed to the listener. Thank you for sharing your talent for so many years. Best, Brian
My favourite drummer ever! All of his music is a part of music other musicians are playing together with him. His music is a good groove, special feeling in the song and liquid complexity. Great!
He was among the first to buy or begin to play the great YAMAHA 9000 series wayback in the late 70's in the States (USA) But I was among the very first to buy me that same drum kit. And now some 40 years later I've bought me a brand new Yamaha Stage Custom and I'm in love! It feels like finding a lost brother to have them back in my BedRoom Studio
This is exactly why. Steve was the most sought after in the 70’s. Then he eventually tours with Clapton. You can’t teach feel. And he is the greatest. 🤘
Always loved Steve Gadd's approach. Even as a kid as well. He always keeps it simple n groovy, but his finesse and feel always wins me over ....Big respect
Take note if you're one of those that can only play fast as lightning trying to impress someone. Here's the real deal. Smooth tempo, solid fundamentals and plays with a musicality that speed demons can't produce. This is why Dr. Steve Gadd is the best.
I’m from Western NY and my teacher had a good relation with John Beck from Eastman. Bottom line, whatever Steve learned, he built on that and taught ALL of us how to play, whether we realized it or not. He make it look so easy, but….it’s not! Waiting for Gaddiments 2 Steve.
There is no one smoother on the kit than Gadd! I recommend to those who haven't seen it, the video of him and Stanley Clarke dueling it up. Regardless of your playing level, that video will school you.
Can't say this enough. Steve Gadd hits the drums imo the way they should be. I think it's perfect execution. I've been using his signature sticks for decades 😊
Just one of 'fifty ways' to blend several rudiments around the kit. Not trying to knock seven bells out of the kit but playing with skill and control. Still got it 'after all these years'.
Nice solo using dynamics and tasteful rudiments mix in with the kit beats. My favorite song with Steve playing will always be Humpty Dumpty. Sorry I never took lessons with you at the Collective in 83, I fealt that Dave and Joel along with a few others did you justice Stay blessed Steve and Enjoy Life
If I ever accidently have a second of sounding like that... It will be the happiest day of my life.
This is what masterful drumming is. Incredible groove, control, and feel. Steve Gadd has it all.
And sound!

Hè is the best , The Top
💯 % agree 😊
Touch, time, phrasing, pocket, ideas. It's absolute mastery.
It's almost pornographic the amount of action he has going on in the pocket.
He is one of the few drummers that his drums sound like a melody and does not need music to accompany it. True genious on the throne.
Yes 🎉 Tony Williams and Ginger Baker two others who could do it.
Not many others.
Incredible that Gadd is still learning after all these years.

Great comment, really useful

I just got his book Gaddiments and it's all about displacement. It's awesome, currently only on a pad, can't wait to get on the kit!
@@Zigzagtiger Me too!! Hell yeah
The way he uses his chops, coupled with his grip... This artistry s really beautiful to watch. Not to mention how good the vid truly is overall.
Keep Playing Steve!
It's amazing how relaxed his arms and wrists are.
THE sound!
The Godfather of contemporary drumming!
A true master. The only bad thing in this video is that it ends.
That's a 100% no-nonsense drum solo.
Ah this is why i love Steve Gadd. The beat n stroke he plays always filled with dynamism and deliciously groovy. Hats off old man!
The man is unstoppable.
Gadd is still the man. And the drums are tuned to perfection here as well. So great.
the combinations of the flams on the toms/snare are sensational.
Yea I'm gonna need 10 more minutes of that please. What a *feel* he has!

Depuis le temps il n’y a rien eu de mieux. Steve est musical et ça donne envie, il est aussi compréhensible quand il joue, comme si nous parlions tous la même langue. Il reste et restera le boss, merci Steve. 😊🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😉

i like his style, unique....
Steve, hummmmmm : A legendary groove not as others 🤘🤘🤘
Steve is a genius!

the legend of Gadd!
Steve for me is the master of drums. It’s in the way he plays, just amazing feel for rhythm and tempo. You just feel like tapping along.
Steve Gadd is THE KING of drumming
His playing is so stable and perfect, I would trust him with my life in every single hit.
ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME !!! No one sounds like Gadd but Gadd
He was among the first to buy or begin to play the great YAMAHA 9000 series wayback in the late 70's in the States (USA) But I was among the very first to buy me that same drum kit. Incredible groove and sound ... Best drummer !
Very Nice Steve gadd
The drums as a melodic, orchestrated, instrument rather than a time-keeping device...devoid of feel, expression, and dynamics....MASTER.
Easily best drummer I’ve seen live, Steve Gadd. Deepest goosebumps pocket! So good
This solo gets better n better each and passing day
Always loved Steve Gadd's approach. Even as a kid as well. He always keeps it simple n groovy, but his finesse and feel always wins me over ....Big respect
His touch is very soulful. I don't know exactly what I am talking about. But it's true very soulful.
I've been drumming for 35 years and I'd say you do know exactly what you're talking about!
Take note if you're one of those that can only play fast as lightning trying to impress someone. Here's the real deal. Smooth tempo, solid fundamentals and plays with a musicality that speed demons can't produce. This is why Dr. Steve Gadd is the best.
Groove king!
Immaculate, Steve Gadd is one of the greatest to ever combat the artform.
Master of dynamics and applying rudiments.
What an inspiration of a man.
You're a legend sir Steve Gadd! :-)
Steve Gadd, the standard by which drummers are measured in today's drum world.
If it was you would have hardly any metal bands
Such a treat. Absolutely wonderful playing, and those drums sound incredible! That 10" rack tom is tuned perfectly.
What a piece of art!
Incredible. Simply the best. His grooves are at another level
Steve Gadd & Recording Custom…
Great collaboration!
Unparalleled feel and timekeeping ability as always.
Absolutely masterful and mesmerizing.
I could listen to this all day! In fact, I will!
One of the cleanest drummers I've heard!!!!
Beautifully tuned drums 🔑

You can almost eat off these grooves.Bon Appetit!
With Gadd there is a before and after in the drums ....... absolutely master.
The FEEL! It just gets better with Steve, transcending time and space.
There is no one smoother on the kit than Gadd! I recommend to those who haven't seen it, the video of him and Stanley Clarke dueling it up. Regardless of your playing level, that video will school you.

What an amazing touch on the drums. So relaxed and syncopated. Perfect dynamics

These drums sound amazing....and Steve Gadd is the best to demo them!!

The pocket and open spaces are amazing.

Legend has it Gadd's watch is still keeping perfect time by periodically checking Steve's wrist.

Why is Steve Gadd so good 🙏🏻🤝👍🏻!!
Master of swing. Master of just hitting things in any pattern you wish for.
Why is it, that I just love to listen to this guy playing!
It's amazing to see this guy Steve still pumping out patterns awesome Gadd rudiments. 🙏🥁😏👍
All about feel & Being in that pocket.. one of the GOATS for sure
The most influential drummer of the last 50 years .period
How about Neil Peart?
@johnwhite2320 yes of course Neil Peart definitely...there are many drummers in many genres that were influential...the list would be long...
Wonderful. You can hear Steve's teaching us here; beat displacement and everything. 🎶🌟👍
He’s such a legend I love Steve Gadd
Love it. Starts out with flam accents and builds off that basic rudiment. Great drumming🤘.
