Massive ISSUE After Buying Our First Sailing Boat

  • First week on board and what a rollercoaster of emotion it was. Having just bought and moved onto our dream sailing boat, we were hit with the obstacle of where to keep it. Being told to leave (with all marinas, everywhere full), is just not really what you want to hear when you have just bought something 40ft..however, our luck changed and we managed to find a space.
    However, we weren't out of the woods yet, we had to move the boat for the first time and then a storm hit and we spent the next few days sheltering from the rain and consistently checking our mooring lines.
    Plummeted head first into the harsh reality of boat life (but wouldn't wish for it to be any different)!

    About Us
    We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
    However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
    We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

    Congratulations. Great news about the mooring.
    Zach, avoid coiling around your elbow. This doesn't help and just introduces more tangles. Roll between your thumb and first finger of your right hand and place the loop onto your upturned left fingers. Draw out the new section with your right hand, twist again and place on your left fingers again to remove twists and tensions. Hope this helps.

    Yet another new subscriber here who has just discovered your channel. Luv the sense of excitement conveyed in your videos, it reminds me of my first steps into yacht ownership back in the 1980's. I hope to follow your adventures this season. Just a few old seadog tips for you... life at a marina berth is more comfortable when tied up using proper twisted mooring lines that are more elastic than braided rope used for sail halyards and sheets which snatch under load. Tip No.2. Try and clock up as many cruising miles as possible in the next few months before starting big boat improvement projects.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 года назад

      Thankyou! We will look into twisted mooring lines- the tyres do stop the snatch but it could always be better! We are spending quite a while in the UK getting to know the boat inside and out and getting the miles up- want to take no risks 😊 thanks for the advice!

    Onboard in winter - Get a desiccant dehumidifier or the mould will get into everything in time. To save space I plumbed ours in to save space. Ecor Pro DH800. Over time we have also fully insulated the hull above the waterline. Cozy even sub-zero outside.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 года назад

      We were just thinking this but not sure as we will be coming into summer soon! The walls are insulated in Carpet until about 1m above waterline but could be a little thicker i reckon! What do you insulate yours with? 😊

    • @johnhayford5946
      @johnhayford5946 2 года назад

      @@TeuluTribe Ouch!! Carpet. I see trouble ahead. Use closed cell foam like the stuff they use in RV's. It must be a min of 10mm thick, ideally 20mm. Anything less and you will get condensation. I initially used 5mm, them went to 7mm only after 10mm did the condensation stop. The channel Sail Life had the same problem and had to increase the insulation in their forward cabin.
      You will also need to fit the insulation in warmer conditions to get the surface dry, otherwise it wont stick on.
      I learnt the hard way, only use chemicals when it's warm.

    Oh my goodness, there are so many sailing channels out there, with the Aussie La Vagabonde crew in the lead with a staggering 1.7 MILLION subs, so I am always on the lookout for a new channel to latch on to! I used to own a 45ft trimaran many moons ago (and did exactly the same thing the first time I stepped on board, meaning I banged my head on the mizzen boom) and I always love watching newbies, for want of a better word. You guys have got it all, a rather nice boat, boundless enthusiasm (PLEASE don't lose it) and above all, personality! Which you seem to have in spades. I wish you well, and I'll keep watching, I promise...

      Thanks so much Leo! Wow a 45ft Trimaran?? Bet she flew. Haha yes, I feel like hitting your head on the boom is a right of passage 😅 almost cut it out but want to keep it real over here 🤣 will try not to lose our enthusiasm! Can’t see it going anywhere though, we are just so happy in boat life ☺️

Buying a home is out of reach for so many young people, and we all look for creative ways to live however we can. Sometimes constrains can help us for the better! When leaving the dock under those windy conditions, use a "spring" line at the center line of the boat. This will keep the boat stable because it is secured midship and then you can quickly remove the ONE line from the dock and be on your way. (this removes the chance of the bow or stern being kicked out by wind/current. Love the videos :)

    Looks a well cared for boar considering her age, think you have done well. I looked over two years ago but ended up with a Moody 42. One little thing I notice in your use of the cooker is it is on gimble while you are in harbour, bit dangerous I would put the gimble lock on to stop it tipping hot food over you especially when opening the oven door.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 года назад

      Thanks Andrew. She was really well cared for- we feel so lucky. Moody 42’s are lovely! We only have the hob unlocked because sometimes we get the wake of big ships passing in the channel and it will really rock us so we don’t want hot food going everywhere 🙈 see you on the water!

    The wiggle will stop anything from breaking so is part and parcel - make sure she's pointing to wind. Wait till you're being blown off the pontoon when you're moving her! Lots of fenders and lines - and reading, it's all good fun, and don't be afraid to ask the marina bosuns for help when docking or moving. Check the batteries - number one, and the boat looks really good.... well done for your selection and being able to purchase her. Tie the mizzen boom off to one side if you keep hitting you head on it! Tidal streams and wind, the Channel is famous for it, more reading, and don't be afraid to ask anyone - local knowledge is priceless. Looking forward to the next video, well done!

    You certainly bought a good boat. I had a Victor 40 for a number of years in the 80's, easy to sail even single handed and very forgiving. You may want to check into the wiring as boat is a bit dated. But you are going to have a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.

      @TeuluTribe  2 года назад

      Thanks Nigel ☺️ That’s what attracted us most to the ketch. And the safety element- she’s got an encapsulated keel and protected rudder, just what we wanted ☺️ we will check all the wiring soon, we don’t want any surprises in the middle of an ocean!

  • @andrebauer576
    @andrebauer576 2 года назад

    The person at the bow should loosen the windward line least. For leaving put them on slip,, so have them long enough to run around the cleat on the pier and back. This way one can manage the engine and the stern lines, the second one the bow lines and fenders if necessary. In strong winds lines on slip can come loose from the cleats, so it's not suggested over night if you're not sure about the weather. I suggest to you BOTH a skipper training. At sea any member of the crew must be able to do any task necessary to get the boat into a harbour. Including electric and engine work. If one is injured there is one one left.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 года назад

      Thats great- we know for next time- thanks! We both did our day skippers qualification last October which we found to be very helpful so are both 100% happy to do anyjob. We now just need to practice in a lot of different situations- we got taught how to moor a boat in a marina finger and alongside but had very different tides and winds that day, so we are just adapting our knowledge to now fit this boat 😊
