I'll always prefer physical media over digital ones. That's because everything that we watch online doesn't belong to us and can be removed at any time. When it comes to CD, DVD and Blu-Ray discs, this is our property. Still easy to reach at any time, it doesn't require any paid subscription and most importantly by buying these we've received a lifetime license for using them. That's why I still buy music, movies and video games on traditional discs.

I love optical drives. I purchased one with M disc support. Was able to backup all my old photos and videos into single 100gb mdisk. I think they still are useful for archival.

This is amazing!!! I am brand new to pc gaming and built a pretty powerful computer to play cyberpunk at 4k 60fps. But now i am buying a bunch of old games from steam sales😅 Even more recently, i bought a ps2 in order to collect ps1 and 2 games from my childhood. I got the console because of nostalgia, but mostly because I thought it was the only way to play them physically! I found this video because i searched "best cd/rom optical drive for my pc build" because i have also been wanting to start collecting old physical pc games as well. And this is the most amazing find ever!!! I am going to be enjoying so many games from every console, without having to collect all of the expensive hardware (unless I find one that i absolutely must have). This creates a huge world of opportunity when it comes to collecting games physically!!!

Hey 🍗! Yes, great point here. For anyone streaming or capturing gameplay, this is a way easier solution. Keep it all internal on the PC, and it captures much cleaner and easier.

Funnily enough I hadn't considered this option, thanks for the reminder Jason!
I have a couple PS2s that struggle to read discs at the correct speed so I sometimes get some stutter where it tries to catch up and load all the info from the disc, either that or in a couple cases it just wont read a disc at all.
My brother has all his old PC parts stored away so I might be able to find a drive for free even. Worth considering looking into when I play some PS2 games again.

Hey Espen, always good to see you! That's something I didn't touch on and should have as well. If you have a broken console, or one with a disc drive on the way out, this is a great option for you to re live the games. I have a PS2 that does this too. Some games it takes forever to load up and throughout the game stalls and hangs. Great input here, thx for watching!

I've always had a drive in my pc for games and music. Finding good modern cases sucks though. They rarely have disc drive bays, and external disc drives can cause issues with some older pc games.
I also recommend buying a Greaseweazle for old floppy games. I use mine to back up PC, Amiga and Atari ST games.

Bluray optical drives are definitely the future of my collecting. I'll be able to copy all of my 4k discs after a community firmware patch, and have my own home netflix service. Also, for all movies not from the big companies, physical still makes them more money because collectors want that stuff

I'm still not sure that I agree. After having used CHD files, you can't beat the convenience of having dozens or hundreds of PSX and PS2 games, both CD and DVD, all individually compressed neatly into much smaller files. No need to change discs, no load times. And it works with other optical disc based consoles as well, including TurboGrafix-16, Sega CD and Saturn.
I stopped buying CDs well over a decade ago and the last time I actually burned an ISO to disc to install an OS was several years ago (I now use Ventoy).
Ripping audio CDs was the very last use I ever had for an optical disc drive, and although my laptop does have a DVD drive, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that these days it really is useless.

I'll replace them then. I'll take them apart. Fix some because our love physical media when they first came out with IDE was back in '86 with the white cable. I installed an optical drive recently (LG WH16NS40) and I ended up having a ton of issues with it as a result. This is such a niche problem in 2023 because NO ONE uses optical drives anymore, so I couldn't really fix the problem. Uninstalling the optical drive outright fixed the issue, and I really don't care to diagnose further.
The first roadblock to using this thing was lack of proper cables. The drive didn't come with any cables whatsoever, and in order to plug it into my power supply, I needed to get one of those wide SATA hard drive cables that was also compatible with my Seasonic power supply. Not only that, I needed an angled SATA cable to plug into my motherboard because my GPU made it difficult to plug in regularly. Also in the process of pulling my GPU out multiple times, I broke the locking lever on my PCI-E slot. Not the optical drive's fault or anything, but... the whole thing caused a massive headache and already left a sour taste in my mouth. Some things to keep in mind when buying an optical drive is you might need to buy cables separately.
Once I had it plugged in and got it working, I realized that Windows 10 would randomly crash ALL THE TIME. I tried a bunch of things to get it to stop, and nothing. Google searches didn't do jack because no one uses optical drives with Windows 10, apparently. Random forum posts from 10 years ago didn't come in clutch this time around... updating Windows, installing the most updated drivers for the optical drive, neither of those worked, nor did all the other basic trouble shooting methods. The Windows crash report didn't tell me jack either. After crashing at least once or twice a day for about two weeks, it eventually messed up my boot order, making it so I couldn't boot into my Windows partition upon shutdown. So I ended up having to reset my BIOS to its factory settings. I couldn't discern if it was my motherboard or Windows 10 that REALLY didn't like my optical drive, but either way, the random crashing persisted after that. I was eventually fed up and uninstalled the drive entirely, and the problem magically went away, so... fixed it? Kind of sucks I can't have an optical drive, but... I got what I needed out of it for that 2 weeks and haven't had any other reason to need it anyways.
So... I guess don't buy the LG WH16NS40 if you're running Windows 10 and a Gigabyte B450M DS3H motherboard, haha.

By the way Do PS3 Blu ray games read on PC BD-ROM drives? I know Ps1/Ps2, CD/DVD roms read just fine, but I have never tried PS3 emulation yet.
I know XBOX and NINTENDO made it a real pain in the ass to read their disks on a PC, but Sony never has in the past.
I am just wondering, do I just YO-HO HO PS3 games from the pirates, or is getting the physical PS3 BD-ROMS worth it if I am planning on using Emulators only without real console hardware.
Are the disks encrypted and unreadable (XBOX STYLE), or do they read out of the box like PS1/PS2 disks...
    (YES I HAVE A BD-XL WRITER already.)

Awesome, thanks for watching! Ya, Windows 7 is difficult due to support and compatibility. It can still be used, but it might be difficult. You'll have to find an older drive that works with your system, but that should be the easy part.

  • @technoir2584

Great video. Educate the kids bro. It is kind of sad to see CD's go but the fact is that they want to take that control away from you (and say it's for your convenience) and make everything digital so you have to go to them, and you have to be connected/signed in/tracked/monitored/ with a risk of being censored or banned to get the stuff you already paid for. Not to mention what are you going to do if you can't afford the internet bill for a month or two? Modern PC towers don't even have a slot for CD/DVD Burners anymore but people with more than 12 brain cells and a few extra bucks can buy and external CD/DVD Burner or just connect an internal one with a longer SATA cable and set it on top of the tower lol. Do whatever you got to do.

I’d try it in a windows PC and see if not works there. It might not support Mac OS. Look on the disc cover or back cover, it might say system requirements somewhere on there.

Good luck. Apple loves to drop support for obsolete software so it is extremely unlikely very old programs (especially software built for PowerPC CPUs) will run on modern Macs.

Yeah this seems really cool until you realize that it's absolutely 100% pointless. If you're running a game in an emulator, using the real software isn't doing anything more than inconveniencing you. It doesn't make anything more or less accurate. I've done this with Sega CD on the Fusion emulator since I have physical games but no Sega CD hardware. It was fun the first time I did it. After that I just loaded the CD image.
