I love growing plants in LECA and semi hydroponics (passive hydroponics) and I can't believe I started this journey a year ago.
These two variegated monsteras are just so gorgeous. I took the leap a year ago since my monsteras weren't doing well. I threw my monstera thai constellation in LECA and semi hydro and my monstera albo borsigiana into LECA and semi hydroponics. This Monstera growth update goes through the journey of 1 year! It is super crazy looking back and how far they've come. 😍

WOOOW. A few people have recommended your leca videos to me. My thai constellation has been in Leca for about a year after 3 bouts of root rot in soil, and she's finally happy! I am highly considering moving my albo into leca now too...

OMG HIII! 🥰🤩 I am so happy she's happy now!! I am honestly soooo happy I decided to transfer mine into LECA. Obviously I've seen tons of gorgeous albos growing in soil. I guess it's just your preference and if you're willing to take the risk 😬 Looking back, it still gives me anxiety 🤣. Best of luck if you decide to do it!! 💚

I’m so excited to start my LECA journey. I have a large Thai con with three leaves that hasn’t grown anything in the year I’ve had it despite a happy root system, so I’m excited to switch it and see if it makes it happier! And switch a few other monsteras I have. Your LECA video is such a thorough help in transitioning and giving me the confidence to give it a try! And this video just enhances it haha

Hello Kevin. I really enjoy watching your videos. I have seen almost all of them, and repeatedly. Hahaha! I would like to know how your Thai Constellation and other monsteras in leca are doing now, more than 2 years after transplanting them. How do you manage the roots when you don’t want to repot them to a bigger pot? I just bought a Thai Constellation and thinking if I will move it to leca. Your advice on replanting and other tips would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm so grateful I found this video when I did - by the time I found it, you'd posted the Complete Guide, and the two together changed everything for me.
I got super lucky water propagating a top cut albo in water, and it was time to move her to her permanent substrate. Right up until I saw this, I had planned to move her to a chunky aroid mix, but I was terrified that no matter how careful I was, it would rot her beautiful roots.
Instead, I moved her to leca, using General Hydroponics nutrients, and just two weeks after the transfer, she's pushing roots out of the bottom of her 5" net pot and the leaf that had started to work its way up the previous petiole before I transferred her has separated and should start to unfurl in a couple of weeks.
Thanks so much for sharing your story and your process. I'm pretty sure you saved me from making a terrible mistake.

If you chop it, I have no problem taking it and caring for it for you! 😅💚🌱🪴 love your thai and albo soooo much! I had bought a double node wet stick albo and now have 2 baby leaves and it is currently in moss and I've been debating if I should use leca or soil for it. What are your thoughts???? I do have a few of my plants in leca and majority in soil. So I do have some experience with leca. But I'm stuck on deciding for this plant lol

I have 2 Thai Constallations, one in Leca one in Lechuza PON, both doing great, however the one in Leca is doing much better, and I genuinely think it’s because the amount of air around root system! Both planted maybe month apart, and Leca is doing thousand times better! On the other hand, my anthuriums are feeling better in PON, pushing new growth like crazy! Glad I ditched standard soil!

Hey! I don't know of any places locally right now. I bought mine online from north shore tropicals. I think urban plant haven is selling a few right now.

I feel your pain picking up your large scale leca pots. THEYRE SO HEAVY. I have my reg monstera in a super giant pot and I’m pretty sure I die every time I have to move it. Also - I didn’t know floramicro came in a hard water version omggg you are saving me 😍
One more suggestion - but feel free to ignore if you don’t wanna do it lol - I think it’d be fun to try notching for your albo. Those stems are thick enough for it and it’d be fun content that’s not super common (I found you from your philo Brandi care video when no one else was talking about how finicky they were lol). Brooks Davis on fb (or @districtplantdaddy on IG) recently did it with his Florida beauty with pretty decent success so far!

And by that I meant notching instead of propping (or notching before propping) that albo with minimal variegation you mentioned wanting to prop. Sorry I just realized I was unclear 😅

Hey STEPHANIE! haha i don't know if the hard water one makes a difference but just in case 😜. THEYRE SO HEAVY HAHA 😂. Hmm maybe I'll think about notching the not-so-variegated one. I don't want to touch the other one yet ☺️

@@kevin. yes definitely don’t touch the other beautiful albo baby ❤️ (or not so baby anymore? lol)

I totally going to do that. I just want to see 1-2 more leaves and then I'll do it. Or is it better doing it now?

@@kevin. you can totally wait as long as you want! All that notching does is activate the axillary buds below each “notch,” so it’s actually really great for preserving variegation because you get a bunch more opportunities for better genetics without having to cut up the plant and re-root - though you can always cut up the plant afterwards if some axillary buds are still slacking 😂 I saw the update from Brooks that he accidentally cut the top too far and ended up with an unrooted top cutting, and I think that’s the main concern when notching. Definitely recommend trying to reach out to him (I’ve never spoken to him but he’s local to me so I follow him a lot lol).

Did you flush out the dead roots? Because i switched my thai constellation to leca and after a new leaf, it started to look droopy and when i checked, it had root rot! I am trying to root it now in perlite but i am scared to put it back in leca if it survives.

I just put two philodendrons in leca this weekend and your videos really helped and inspired me! Glad to hear about the water (am in ottawa and use tap water too).
Your plant growth is staggering!! 🤯😃 Great videos. Keep up the great content!!

Hi, so what if you want to repot your plant to another bigger net pot how would you do that without breaking the roots?

Cut the pot with an X-acto knife.

Hi Kevin! I followed your Leca method to the T, with net potting and formulas, for my Albo last August. Since then my Albo went from 3 leaves to 10 leaves. How do I know when it’s time to transfer to a bigger pot? Please advise. Appreciate it. Thank you!!!

i'm assuming that once you put your plants into a netted pot, it will be there permanently right?

Please make a vlog about propagating your Thai constellation in Leca in a separate pot! 🥺 Wanted to propagate mine but I’m too anxious on what to do. 🥲

Bec of ur vids, am almost ready to switch some of my plants to leca+hydrophonics.
A question tho, how do u handle the roots that shoots out of the net pot? Do u just cut them(roots) out whenever u need to transfer to a bigger pot? Or do u cut the actual net pot?

Hey Abby! I would definitely start off slow with just a few plants just to see what happens 💚 I usually leave them as is. I find that my monsteras are just fine with the roots sitting in the nutrient solution. Syngoniums seem to act the same way. There are some plants that don't like it though so I tend to cut them. I find that anthuriums don't like to sit in water for too long. If I have to, I cut the net pot which makes me sad 😅
