    Dolly Daihatsu! The best marine gensets ever. In the oil and gas industry my company (converting VLCC and other tankers into FPSOs) always stripped out the original ship's generators (before I went to work for them), replacing them with one emergency and one "essential" high speed engine of equal power. This had been a disaster on every ship they converted to FPSO, so I instituted a change to medium speed Daihatsu, as I was the only one who knew anything about them, so I had my own choice. After the conversion and commissioning were over, the ship sailed under its own power to West Africa, with the engineers complaining that the generators were so good, that they had missed their usual stop-off at Cape Town for 3 weeks where they usually had a good run ashore whilst the high speed units were fixed... For further contracts I managed to persuade the powers that be to keep the original engines intact as it gave you 3MW of free power, and they will last forever. One of our conversions had Daihatsus and ran from '74 when the ship was built to just the other day, when I saw she was removed from FSO service in Vietnam - 44 years. Pretty good!
    In my seagoing time we had 3 Stork-Werkspoor 8-cyl 850kW generators, one of which the 3rd engineer had managed to write off (long story). The company said that they could only supply an equivalent engine, which was a 6-cylinder Daihatsu which was the same power. The engine arrived in the next port and we installed it with the help of a shoreside rigging gang. It was a lovely engine and was known as Dolly because of its name. We would usually use it for the single generator we ran at sea because its fuel consumption was better than the 8-cyl SWD engines. I was hooked...

    Were you at sea or in port doing this work? It's good to see how the younger men are learning - listening for faults and testing.
    During a previous period of unemployment, I got all of my commercial radio licenses including those necessary for ships. Age and health preclude a new career on ships, but it might have been interesting when I was younger. I can fix anything electrical/electronic and I enjoy relative solitude.

      @@ChiefMAKOi In the Navy, this type of overhaul, is attributed to ashore base when the ship is alongside the port. So, we always have all kind of equipments in double or triple to substitute the faulty one. The navigation priorities are: to sail, floating and combat.

    I was surprised to see 480V/60 Hz. (North American standards) I would have expected 50 Hz with associated lower voltage, rest-of-the-world standards. Which voltage standards do most ships use?

    • @ChiefMAKOi
      @ChiefMAKOi  5 лет назад +2

      For the high voltage machinery it's usually 440V/60 Hz. For the low-voltage appliances, it depends on where the ship was built so either 110V or 220V.
      But the generators usually give out 60 Hz.

    • @ChiefMAKOi
      @ChiefMAKOi  6 лет назад

      After a few minutes of initial running test, you have to confirm that the journals maintained their clearance and able to be moved by hand. This confirms that the journal bearings were correctly installed and did not come loose. Also just to confirm that the tightening nuts did not come loose as well.

    I have a question as u go on first day on ship as cadet and that cadet doesnt know anything about machinery do they teach that cadet there.. and who teach it a chief engineer or 2 engineer ??

    • @ChiefMAKOi
      @ChiefMAKOi  7 лет назад +17

      Theoretical part is supposed to be taught while the cadet was still in school. Shipboard training is for learning the practical part. Technically it is not the responsibility of any of the officers to teach, but it is the responsibility of the cadet to learn. So if you don't know something, just ask anyone until you're satisfied you got the correct answer. Because if you don't have the initiative to ask questions, no one will go out of their way just to teach you.
      Personally, for me, I leave the teaching part to 2/E because that's what I did back when I was a 2/E.
      What I do now is I'm the one who asks the cadet questions that I think he needs to learn. If he can't answer, then it means he is not asking enough questions.

      In my company chief engineer and 2nd E put task to the cadet in order to learn about any particular equipment until the cadet had learned the correctly functioning of the mentioned equipment always starting for the more basic equipment to the more difficult. This task are asigned weekly and monthly and at the end cadet has to make a test and pass the examination and the score are recorded in his record sheet.

    • @volkertstoll5261
      @volkertstoll5261 5 лет назад +1

      @@blackbimmer9008 IT is very difficult to wear helmet in the engine room you have to considder to have engine room temperatures up to 40 C. During the work the head is turned up and down that makes to wear a helmet very unconfortable. By overhauling an Aux.Engine you permanently change you work from where it is better to waer gloves to so much sensitive work where you cannot wear gloves. What I saw is common practice when working in an engine room on board.
