Benchmade H&K Ascender knives: High Speed Value

- It's no picnic finding high quality blades that impress me for around $40. Yes the variety and quality of all blades has expanded exponentially in the last few years. But I still don't like making compromises on the big things: steel, deployment speed, lockup, ergonomics, and looks. Few make the cut at this restrictive price point. I also, just like you, I have my preferences. But here's two that make the list: the Benchmade H&K (BM) Ascender Mdl 14352BT and its smaller brother the H&K Mini-Ascender Mdl 14301BT. These knives feature drop point blades, non-serrated variety, which I prefer. There is a lot to like for such affordable blades. First off, these knifes are fast and that makes them fun. Their design is perfectly balanced for wicked quick deployment, both blades leap into the deployed position with a satisfying, authoritative snap. Great knife fondling blades if you ask me for that exact reason alone! Both utilize Chinese-made 9Cr13 blade steel that Benchmade says offers good edge retention and corrosion resistance. Other upsides include: preferable open pillar construction, solid lockup, excellent blade shapes, good looks, good thumbstuds, deep carry pocket clips, VERY FLAT in carry, G10 handle scales (good value addition), and outstanding value for price paid. The large drop point Ascender could provide adequate emergency defensive use. Of course at this price point some downsides will exist: substantially heavier than many competitors (Large Ascender is 5.8 oz, Small 3.0 oz; mainly due to solid steel liners that are not skeletonized), smooth jimping with shallow thumramp, tip down carry with no provision to accommodate lefties. But for around $35 to $45 US dollars (subject to change and variance), these blades offer impressive value and enjoyment to the user. Well done Benchmade./////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 8 out of 10 (price considered)

Fantastic. I'm law enforcement here and they don't let us carry anything but Colt AR's. Been trying to get them to let us qualify with 416's. There purchasable if your law enforcement.
I think... I'm.... IN LOVE WITH THIS KNIFE.
Oh, it's goin' on my list!
My god, I kept wondering if he was gonna pull out another knife! Now you've added another 3 knives onto my list. Damn you!
Good to see another knife review, thanks Mr Fancy
I picked up this knife a couple weeks ago, LOVE IT! (I use it as an EDC)
I miss these old classic table top reviews
you rock nuttin, love the vids good to hear that theres more coming
I think I'll have to get me one of them. I really like the looks.
If you guys pay attention in the beginning of the video he said its a H&K knife marketed by benchmade
if you pop out the hk logo it comes with another one so that you can swap sides for the pocket clip, although you cant swap ends.
Nuttin! Another FIne job buddy! Keep on Truckin' sir!
new graham will ship international. regardless of whom you order from you need to call and talk to someone there to get everything straightened out.
5 stars, great review, might pick up one of these soon
Sorry to be pedantic but it is just HK not H and K, pet peeve of mine. However your prowess and knowledge when it comes to knives and tool steel, for that matter makes up for it. I am an armorer/gunsmith and an ABS journeyman and your knowledge is ,well, intimidating. I just stumbled upon your videos and I am impressed
P.S.One way to maintain product exclusivity is to overprice it.
Very awesome! Love that HK! Dude i buy so much cool stuff because and thanks to your great reviews! Thanks Nutn
First off, I'd just like to say that I really appreciate all of your videos, I've been watching them to gather information on guns and knives recently. I think your information is excellent and accurate.
I was just wondering if you could take a look at the S&W CKHB hawkbill knife. It's a little heavy, and an odd blade design, but I feel it's a solid design. I've had one for a while and it still works well for me. Thanks, and keep on truckin!
Nice and open for easy cleaning of the mud, blood and guts. Awesome quote! haha yes this makes knives much more efficient and easier. Important to have a knife that is easy to clean the left overs of your victims.
emmerson, trust me its worth it. they are super quality knives. like benchmade.
Based on nutn's review of this blade, I found one of these on ebay, new, for just over $50. First production too, 274 of 500, and it's so gorgeous. It's like knife-porn. Awesome.
about the clip being on the wrong end; I personally like having tip-down carry especially with a blade that may tend to open partially while being carried.
he suggested a tip for the screws. Buy some locktite (can find it at walmart) and put a drop in and screw it in.
About the liner locks: It's not just the thickness, it's also where it's placed. On this HK, it's right near the edge of the joint, where it is more likely to slide off, or be forced off. With both Spyderco's and the RAT the liner is placed in the middle of the joint, where it sits more securely.
That HK does not look secure to me.
Finally a H&K Knife :D
Thinking about getting a Snody to go with my 416.
wish that clip could move to other side. does that HK logo pop out to allow clip mount?
Even if it wasn't a real surprise, now we all know that Nutnfancy likes "the blade shit"... (:
Excellent video!
I'll agree. I bought a Benchmade LFK off of Nutnfancy's review of it. It IS a lot of knife, and it came sharp, but the pocket clip loosens up ALL THE TIME. It was so bad, that one of the screws came out and got lost and I had to ask Benchmae to re-ship me replacements. They were cool about doing it, but it's left a bad taste in my mouth.
@Orthrus
Ah. I was wondering why HK had their logo on a Benchmade knife. Thanks!
Hey man that makes sense. Good points. There's a lot of factors that affect the economy though. This is just one of them. Corruption and greed are the two biggest problems when it comes to our economy here in the US and they've cost us billions as tax paying citizens (bailout)
you almost said "blade shits." Awesome vid, was thinkin about geting that knive. Keep up the great reviews
Would you Rather have the reon 1 or the acsender
could you later review the endurance of the ascender?thx man
Actually u can change the clip to have it left side tip down. You have to pop off the plastic hk logo. They give u an extra one so u can replace it on the right side if u want to change it. You should really update ur info. I was upset u said the clip couldn't go to other side. But I bought it anyways and found out u could!
I just bought a Spyderco Tenacious last week!
What do you think will age better ascender or tenacious (black) money wise?
this must have gone out of production because i cant find it at YourCornerStore
is there a serrated version of this?
I wonder how easy it to self skeletonize a liner?
Did Heckler & Koch have anything to do with the development of the knife, or did they just slap their name on it so they could put it on their online store?
Playa, what kind of cameras do you use? Could you please do some reviews cameras?
the hk logo comes off allowing to put the clip in either side. the logo acts as a hole cover.
Nut'n, love the vids. Keep 'em comming LTC.
Flash, H&K is a full blown separate top-notch gun company. They have nothing to do with Benchmade, and certainly aren't a sub-company.
Benchmade is separate from H&K, they just used H&Ks logo on this knife for advertisement purposes.
Newer Militaries have aliner on both sides.
They match the locking liners size and are not full slabs.
Very well said Robby.
try the Benchmade axis lock
I hate lockbacks personally
great review keep them coming! :)
Why does it say "check out our other brands" and lists H&K on Benchmades website?
"Sorry Nutn. I did not mean to start a political wildfire. It's a knife vid and I know you like to keep the comments related to the subject. Again, Great review!!" No prob Jeep. Yes I try to avoid the politics in the review because it becomes such a distraction. Other vids can address that. Peace bro.
Sweet dude, I picked one up about 3 months ago, 119 out of 500 hehe. Yours came sharp out of the box, because mine came incredibly dull?
Another great review! thanks nutn!
I just get the feeling that it looks a lot like the CRKT Drifter
I have 334 / 500. Its pretty cool, but I did have the issue of the blade unfulding in my pocket.... Not cool.
Hey nutn I'm an avid watcher of your vids and was wondering your take on the H&K Auto, Model # 14700? I've had it for some time now and love it, it has that "second kind of cool for me" haha.
Have you ever thought about disassembling and skeletonizing the liners? It wouldn't be that difficult a task, and you could take a fair bit of weight off those knives. :-)
what is the 200dollar knife he talked about? emerisson?
sometimes the tip up carry is not always the best. I had my tenacious open in my cargo pocket almost cutting my leg when i squated down. squated thats funny!
you realy now what you are talking...
great stuff...
regards
sercout
Haha Doodle said it was the HK Avenger. I was googling "hk avenger" with no results thikning to myself "Wow... Doodle must really have the hook up."
Benchmade is one of the best in USA! The only one that can compete with it is Master of Defence
It's probably still processing in the background on the RUclips server
Wish they had drilled for point up carry.
The blade looks like it's been modeled after a SOG Spec-Elite II... Hmm.
Good review NnF :)
Going to try Gunsmith. .
he does that to a lot of his knives his ontario rat 1
he did that and duracoated it i believe
@Shankb777 Heckler and Koch? Dont you think its pretty understandable to say it as H&K?
the blade looks just like my S&W swat blade
The Chinese probably got 5 bucks for that knife if they were lucky. The Americans involved in the process got much more of the 45 bucks than the Chinese did for sure.
i had my crkt m 16 open in my pocket and it would have sucked if the tip was up
How many other American's have I missed in this process. Cheap foreign made products is one of the things that has driven our economy to the prosperity we have.
Sheesh!
man you can still see some battle damage on the knife you used for stabbing protocol vid, nice.
All the knifes in this video look nice. could you just drill some of your own holes and change the position of the clip?
They got licensing from H&K GmbH...
Kinda like Umarex.
Besides, the knife in this video is a Ascender mini..
I like the shape of the German blades.
Nice Video. Thank you for doing it. Would say that you could buy a CS Spartan, about the same money, get a bigger knife, longer reach, better handle and is made of the same material as is the Recon. IMO That not withstanding this video may be previous to the Spartan's release date.
at 5:24 it almost sounds like he said "blade shit"
Probably not very, but I bet you have veryyyyyyyyy careful not to compromise the strength of them.
i like my benchmade 51BK worth every penny
From what I've heard H&K knives are made by Benchmade. Guns be guns but the knives are made by Benchmade.
the spring on one side of my axis lock on the benchmade 940 broke....... =\
Nice knife but theblade on the Benchmade Vex is better shape for the same amount of cash.
Kershaw leek is an awesome knife..under $40
thew vid stopped at 18:09 for me...idk why though.
"made in China" doesn't automatically quarantine a knife as a p.o.s. .....its all about a company's quality control.
"hang out with your knife" lol
YOU LIE!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU FORGOT KERSHAW!!!!!! but what do I know I dont have a bunch of awesome videos about knives and just like all your other ones this is awesome just pointing that out if anything not bashing your video keep the great videos coming!
good looken knife i like the ka bar's my self i dont own 1 but have handel a few at stores im more a a gun guy
that blade would be soooo much better if it came sharper than a butterknife. i would totaly buy it if it came sharpish.
Norway bro. Military issued.
Hard to beleive I've seen them all. :-P
I can hardly believe that after 3 years, you're still having to explain this concept to people. How do these people survive?
I suppose people also think that HK actually weaves and stitches T-shirts...
Seriously, I forgot I even watched this video and then get a comment in my inbox and am wondering, "Wait, wtf did I post on here? Ooooooh, right."
Jesus.
Fondle???? LOL, I love fondling knives
look you can buy that knife but it doesnt really compare in quality usually so ok you can buy that cheap knife but things like steel quality lock up handle quality etc etc will really be a lot worse than more expensive knives but if u like or love your cheap knife that probably wont work as well or last nearly as long good for you but there are a lot of differences in quality that you may or may not realize that are why that knife is $45 and yours is $6.85
Want to know something funny? The tenacious and this knife are made in the same exact factory...Sanrenmu makes all chinese knives for Benchmade and Spyderco.
Dude, NutnFancy quotes REAL prices from yourcornerstore more often than not. Besides, my point was why would you buy an H&K (in name only) junk china knife when you can get the superior ColdSteelRecon knife for $20 more?
Q-C is a process to ensure junk does not go out the door to the consumer. The H&K has a dull edge. So for your $45 bucks, you get a knife that failed Q-C, or the plant has no Q-C at all - so they suck. Ask yourself, if Gillette sold you a dull razor, would you say "OK, cool"??
yes, I own it.
lol that looks like a remake of the Smith and Wesson s.w.a.t knife i.e same blade shape. i have a first production s&w s.w.a.t knife and it the blade looks just the same except it is 440c
nutnfancy!! WILL U PLEASE MAKE A KA-BAR MULE REVIEW????!!!!!!!!!!
You have an HK 416? Im guessin you dont live in america.
sadly in Germany its not available
killa2191 - Ka-Bar Mule is too damn big for a folding knife...they have them in all the military exchanges here and they look ridiculously large. I think there are many better options.
