Joe, I would really love to see you continue this story. The influence of Kellogg on the future of nutrition in the world was very strong and not to our benefit. I would love to hear you talk about how we ended up with the bizarre nutritional guidelines we have been given by the governments of the world, starting with the US Government back in the 70s.

Current casual SDA here; I found it funny that Joe mentioned that Kellogg worked to make food bland. I forgot to season a spaghetti squash once for a potluck, and all of the older people ate it up. Left me perplexed, because it tasted horrible. Makes sense now...
I would say, I have never met an SDA who sold all their possessions. I think it goes like be prepared spiritually because no one knows when Christ would return.

I went to an SDA school for 7th/8th grade...the food was awful and the people (adherents) were awful, but I smoked pot for the first time there, so...

Fun fact, not too long ago, we literally dug his house out of the ground and transported it across town just to put it into a park. Now there's regular tours of his house.

I love your delivery. I’m a historian that grew up in the SDA church. I knew all this but still found your presentation truly entertaining. Kellogg was a really weird guy. I never bought into the SDA teachings but I did study the history. They actually kicked Kellogg out in 1907 because he was too out there even for them. When I was in college I kept hearing that he had written a book, “The Solitary Vice” on the dangers of masturbation. But, the official church library insisted it didn’t exist…just an urban myth. Then, in my 20s, I came across an original copy that escaped destruction. It was truly disturbing.

Most of the benefits are in just not eating meat. Vegans also live longer on average. But then meat tastes good. So I eat it. LOL I still know my body wants less red meat. Do I listen? No.

@@thebigpicture2032 We know red meat is linked a slew of health issues. I am not saying everyone should be vegan. But most americans do not have affairs. It's not that common overall. What is vastly more common are hotdogs, bacon, and beef. I can enjoy something and be aware it's not great for me. Same is true with beer. Living is more than longevity.

In NZ, we actually have a company called 'sanatarium' and yes it is run by the Seventh Day Adventists. They are a huge food company that makes such local iconic things such as Marmite ( a black salty goo that tastes great in sandwiches) and Weet Bix ( think cornflakes, but in a rectangle biscuit form). Because they are a church based company, they are exempt from paying taxes . They also make alot of non meat products such as Nut Meat.... Yeah, vege casserole ...

One of the bakers of Kellog's Sanitarium moved to Australia and created a company, still owned by the 7th Day Adventist Church, to produced breakfast cereals in Australia and New Zealand, starting with Granola. The products were, and still are, sold under the name Sanitarium.

The entire point of life:
Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. Mathew 20: 28. We are no different. This entire life is a representation of the spiritual warfare going on. Good vs evil. God isn't a flying man in the sky, but the actual representation of Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Light, etc. Not metaphor, but literally, like an extra demintional wavelength of thought, emotions, and intent. The devil is the opposite wavelength, pain, fear, hate, anger, darkness, etc. Human life is serving one of these two. Not a man in the sky, actual sentient collective universal Love. However, humans are primatives, we make mistakes. It's in our nature, since the fall, to go down the wrong path. This means at some time each one of us has served darkness to some degree. God understands our limited understanding of our own actions, so he gave us forgiveness, though sacrificing himself in human form as Jesus Christ. It is our duty to accept that sacrifice, get the forgiveness, and be better, helping others be better, and spreading this wavelength of Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Light, etc, thoughout the universe. But God had to make a way for us to get to this place spiritually, this is why evidence is not allowed. Evidence will make you believe, using the fear of absolute punishment to change your behavior, but that won't make you better, just scared. Faith makes you better. It is what redeemes us, not our works. Faith is the hope that things get better, that justice always prevails, that we're at least loved by our creator. But it has to be Faith in Jesus, because of his sacrifice. And there can't be evidence to point us to him, because Love had to be fair. If there were a code in our DNA, what about everyone born before genetic sequencing? If there were a book with the solar system thosands of years ago, what would stop an evil person from hiding/destroying it? If it were something you had to go to, what about the geographically isolated, imprisoned, or enslaved. If it were a train of logic, what about the uneducated, or mentally slow? Not to mention all the people born before schools. Love cannot give to one without giving to the other. So the key to salvation had to be something everyone has access to. The only thing is Faith. This is why God puts it upon your heart to learn about these things, even if it's only to criticize, or hate. God is everywhere, because Love is everywhere, and so is the devil, because hate is everywhere. They're in your head all the time, regardless of weather or not you accept that. They whisper inside your heart, giving you ideas. But more than that, they're inside everyone's heart. This is how they get things done. They corrordanate us like pieces on a chess board. The only difference is, we get to chose who's side we're playing for. At the end of our life, we go to that team's home base, Heaven, or Hell. A place where all that exists is those wavelengths. Hate, pain, anger, fear, darkness; or Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Pleasure, Light. The choice is yours to make. But you cannot go to Heaven with hate in your heart. You must forgive, repent, and spread joy for those around you. These are sentient eternal controlling forces in our universe. Heaven and Hell are very real places, I've seen them. Those steps prime your soul for a meeting with God. Very literally. Once you've done all four, in that order, you get divine revelation, with all the evidence you'll ever need. They are, forgive your parents, brake down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read the Bible. Step four takes three books to get the revelation. I recommend Genesis, Mathew, and then either Luke, Psalms, or proverbs. The order of the steps is important, step 1 has to come before step 3. I can state that for an absolute certainty that these steps always work. Please, take your salvation seriously. See for yourself. Do those steps. Jesus Christ is Lord. It's all True.

Btw, actually I put a little brown sugar on mine. It seems that is unusual in most circles I mention it. :/ I sometimes even use honey. I just don't like the raw sugary sweetness of refined white sugar. So, I guess I am going against the rules. I think everyone will thank me for not divulge my mastabatory habits, though. :P But anyway, hey, if anyone else likes refined white sugar on their cereal, more power to ya! :)

@Albert Miller frosted is basically a sugar coating taking it's inspiration from cake frosting.
@Albert Miller we use them interchangably in the US, but frosted refers to a thin glaze, where icing "usually" refers to a thicker milk/cream based substance.
But then again... frosted flakes have a glaze, and frosted wheets have an icing........
As always, this Thursday historical piece was excellent. I also did wonder if "The Road to Wellville" would be mentioned, and was right pleased that it was. Can't resist this epic quote from that movie - "Why, my own stools sir are enormous, and have no more smell than a hot biscuit". The goat gland thing though - wow, I had not heard of that. Awesome, as always.
The start of this video reminds me of one of my favorite lines form some infomercial about an elliptical exercise machine.... "twice the workout in one effortless motion".

I have a copy of John Harvey Kellog's "Rational Hydrotherapy" 1906. Wet blankets, jets of water everywhere, the colder the better! Pretty amazing. Very academic, thick book, third edition.
Dr Mr Kellogg would be pleased withme, I'm on my 4th and I've only been awake a few hours! Though this is probably due to some questionable leftovers, not yogurt enemas...
He might be less pleased that I usually eat Post cereals and non dairy milk though...

I don't live too far from there and have fun memories of going there on the field trips as a kid years ago. Driving through BC these days, the wonderful smell of that cereal is all through the city when they are cooking it. No matter what anyone says, us Michigan people that grew up and still live nearby, it was one of our childhood visits, and a cereal we all still consume

J. H. Kellogg was one of those people whose life served as a link between genius and insanity.

Oh yeah, regarding his endorsement of eugenics, a lot of that was related to his kids, whom he had adopted.
See, he was very proud of the fact that he had never consummated his marriage, and all of his children were adopted at varying ages. This also doubled as an early experiment in "nature versus nurture," and all of his children knew they were adopted. One of his sons is believed to have been the biological son of a petty criminal, and as he grew up, he was alleged to have had disciplinary issues at school, and didn't have the easiest time with the law, himself. Kellogg concluded that it was the boy's genes, and not the fact that he was being raised by a rich nutcase with just enough genius ideas to keep his gargantuan ego inflated, and who likely reminded said son every day that he was basically a science experiment, that led his son to turn to crime and (IIRC) drug addiction.
Whether this is what led him to eugenics, or if it was more something that "confirmed" ideas of his that were already favourable of eugenics, I'm not sure, but there you have it - one of Michigan's greatest evil geniuses.
He took in nearly forty kids? Only adopted seven of them! Paid for their education. My great-grandfather was one of them? That's how I found out my family was crazy? The church treated me badly. Quit the church many years ago!

As a physician I would provide one correction on your video- WebMD is actually a horrible place to “double check” how good a doctor is. A much more rigorous way to “doublecheck” as you put it your doctor is if you would have said “they didn’t really have board certification at that time to ensure his qualifications”.

The passive exercise thing was called robotic exercise where I lived and as I understood it the concept was that you lay on the table, and as the machine moves you in some direction, you resisted the motion. At least how I heard it.
Bland corn flakes are pretty good especially if you fry them, sprinkled with salt, add melted cheese, refried beans, seasoned meat, salsa, sour cream, olives, guacamole... 😃
The U.S. did have a eugenics program eventually. It only really ended in the 1970's. Look up the "Fitter Families for Future Firesides" program.

We always associate it with the Nazis and forget that it was here.
Hitler only became interested in eugenics due to one particular American "physician" who wanted to sterilise all black women in the US. Can't remember the guy's name but Hitler had a signed copy of his book.

im a little weird, gross imagery never seems to effect my appetite. i think it's from fishing on the open water: you have to eat lunch covered in fish goo and the kitchen is right next to a bathroom where people have peed everywhere due to the rough water rocking the boat.

I grew up in the same town as John Brinkley, and have passed his house multiple times, it is still there and actually quite charming.
He also put several local people up on the national stage and made them famous, most notably "Aunt Sally," after whom a large curve on the road that runs by John Brinkley's house is named.

Americans are literally poisoning themselves with the ginormous amounts of sugar they consume daily including seemingly "healthy" options from sweetened yogurt to granola to fruit juice and others which all lead to not only obesity but also diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.
