What you were saying about the teddy bear being taken away, I can relate to that 100%. I have skin picked since I was seven and for me it’s the only way that I can relieve my stress other than working out. I have never wanted to let skin picking go and you said it perfectly that it feels like someone is taking the thing that makes you happy away. Or for me it feels like someone is trying to take my coping mechanism away. The irony is that both of my methods for relieving my stress are also the triggers for my stress. So I seem to not only refuse to let Dermotillma go, but when I try to treat my anxiety with skin picking or sports it causes my stress which fuels the cycle 😂.

Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad it makes sense to you and you're able to understand what I'm trying to say with my little teddy example! hehe. Yes it's a tough one and that's usually the reason why many of us find it hard to ''let go'' of our dermatillomania - because we haven't noticed how much we rely on it and removing it entirely gives us a huge level of discomfort.

Part of the reason why I didn't really like CBT was because I was literally thinking about the picking 24/7. I felt so much pressure to do the homework as good as possible and I couldn't think about anything else, which made me pick more. But that again caused more stress as I felt like I wasn't doing well enough. So that wasn't going to work for me 🙃 for now just 'normal' talking therapy feels better. But like you said, I do think that I'm still scared of a life without dermatillomania, so maybe that's also why I felt CBT didn't really work.. I think I was just really scared. And even though I hate to admit it, the idea of not picking still makes me really scared 🙃 so better no CBT for now I think, maybe I'll try again later, I don't know

I am bad at homework in general so I would get stressed about the homework and then feel horrible about myself when I didn’t don it. I wrote in my post that I think CBT works for a certain kind of person... but for me, I am not very organized and am a procrastinator so I feel like the odds are not in my favour for completing the tasks. That will in turn stress me out and make me pick more and then I will feel even more hopeless because I have let down the people trying to help me.

Stephen Mason Thank you for your reply! ☺️ I totally agree with you! The pressure that it causes is just not helpful at all, it makes you feel even worse. I think it could definitely work for some people, just not for everyone. I know myself that sometimes I’m a bit too organized and too much of a perfectionist when it comes to my study and homework, which can be helpful sometimes, but maybe not for CBT. I don’t work well under pressure when it comes to skin-picking 😅

Thank you both for sharing your personal insight on this! I absolutely agree with both of your points 💗 It really depends on our individual personality types which I think is a really fascinating topic in itself. One method doesn’t work for every type of person, so maybe more focus needs to be directed in a tailored approach to individual personalities? Have either of you tried the Myers Briggs personality test? I’d be interested to hear your result!

KIM ON SKIN Yes I did one a few months ago! I scored highest for INFJ. I was surprised that most of the things really sounded 100% like me 😂 it was very interesting 😊 and helpful as well cause I felt like my life and the things I do/how I behave sometimes all made a bit more sense after reading more about it hahaha. What about your results? x

I don't know if you know but you have such an angelic face and your voice is so smoothing. I feel instantly relaxed when watching your videos. It's like : you got over it and you're so beautiful and strong. It gives me hope.

I’ve definitely considered it but haven’t done it yet, I’ve had dermatillomania and dermatophagia for about 10-15 years and I am so ready to stop this awful disorder. It is stealing my life and well being away from me. Once a beautiful girl now all I see is years of damage. I have an appointment for an esthetician to look at my skin and hopefully get micro needling or something that will help my skin heal.

I didnt enjoy CBT because I felt I needed counseling first as my triggers were often traumatic intrusive thoughts/memories etc, and without addressing that first It made me feel ignored and the whole process felt uncaring - making the picking worse haha. Ohwell it's all a learning process. Now I know if I decide to tackle therapies I should seek counseling first.

Hi Kim! I love your videos. You have helped me on my journey to clearer skin so much. Did skin picking affect your job/work like me? Thanks!

Thank you so much Abby! I’m really happy to hear that and your support means so much ☺️ It has in the past yes, however it’s also shown me how my work was actually causing me to skin pick more! So after recognising that, I changed jobs and now feel a lot better. How do you think it effects your job?💗

@@KIMONSKIN I can definitely agree with that! I literally had to get rid of my mirror in my purse and at work, so I'd stop checking my skin throughout the day. It was so embarrassing too. I have been pretty unhappy with my job, for a while. I recently got furloughed, due to the currently world situation and am trying to look at it as a blessing in disguise. I've now been searching and applying to jobs daily! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me! :)
