We have tons of amazing and exclusive information on the Metroid franchise for some upcoming videos. Keep an eye open for them 👀
@dream women not again
*YES*
Just as a note: the early-Phantom Cloak glitch is called the Pseudo-Wave (beam), not the pseudo-plasma.
😁😁😁😁😁
HELL YEAH, MORE METROID!!!
#Metroid #MetroidDread
Rarely did a series of rumors from numerous sources over the course of 16 years ever line up so well with one another to form one consistent story in the end with no contradictions.
A happy ending indeed.
Surprisingly, this was not the first time a Metroid game subverted expectations
@@obiwancannoli1920
Ugghh, what 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@The_Ostrich like when people thought Metroid Prime was going to be bad and it wasn't
It's honestly just crazy we've been using the term Metroidvania for years, and now there's a studio that has officially developed for both series.
So your saying that we should rename the genre to "Mercury Steam"?
And they have made the best sold games in both franchises. Mindblowing!
@@amarillodragon2702 That's not a bad idea!
@@zazito34 What a dream team!
@@zazito34 That's actually heartwarming. What a legacy.
Only one correction I would make: the sequence break for early Corpius is called a Pseudowave, not Pseudoplasma.
Ah yeah that was my bad. I wrote this video, and that mistake slipped through the cracks of revisions and proofreading. Sorry about that.
@LetsPlayNintendoITA - Thanks man, awful kind of you to say :)
@@DJIVision no worries! It was otherwise an extremely well-written and put together video!!
@@neochozo - thanks Neo :)
Dread was so good, I started writing a three part fanfic about what I think could happen after the events of Dread.
A few questions for Metroid Lore experts:
-Do you consider everything that occured in Other M to be canon?
-Does Samus know how to cook?
-Why did Samus lose her suit in Zero Mission when she crashed her ship?
-Why does Samus lose abilities in between games?
-Do you think the EMMI units were originally created to hunt down Samus, considering they were immune to all her weapons and could kill her with a single stab?
-How powerful is the Galactic Federation in military force? Where do they line up against the Star Wars Galactic Republic? Or the Halo UNSC? Or the DOOM ETERNAL UAC/ARC?
Other m is canon.
Samus probably cooks.
She lost her suit because of the damage from the crash.
She doesn't lose the abilities story wise. Just for gameplay. Within the actual story she still has her abilities most of the time.
The emmi probably were made to be immune to samus.
And it's not clear
I love that u guys go out of your way to deliver unheard of Trivia! Can you make an episode on Psychonauts?
Thank you for your efforts Did you know gaming !!!
0:49 Miyamoto what the hell is up with that tongue.
I guess I sequence broke dread, cuz I had the flash shift when I fought kraid. Crazy.
i want to see the metroid game on ds
Bold of them to assume a Metroid game had a script
Is there any comment on exactly how Dread’s development was limited by technology early on? What is it they were unable to do?
I think the main limitation was enemy AI. In this case, what would eventually be EMMI AI.
I like how Nintendo developers like to think about game play first and not even think much about story
Where's all the comments?
Metroid Dread is honestly one of the best recent success stories in gaming, from being heavily rumored, then getting nothing from it, then getting confirmation that it was cancelled twice before finally seeing the light of day this year due to MercurySteam’s work on Samus Returns. And the fact that we got such an amazing game in the end despite such as tumultuous development period, like with Mother 3, is what makes this story so satisfying.👌🏽
Yep
@CRIMNALSNEAK I disagree and why are you telling us?
@CRIMNALSNEAK Metroid Dread is better than Fusion in literally every way.
Also, Fusion didn't have a first party gaming investment at the time.
@CRIMNALSNEAK holy wall of text
@CRIMNALSNEAK I'm glad you wrote out that entire wall of text just to be wrong in every possible capacity
Very glad to be living in a timeline where Metorid Dread finally released and had a successful launch, what a comeback for a series
lmao imagine a timeline where Prime 4 got released first and Dread just got a teaser and vanished
The fact it even did well in Japan is amazing, usually the series isn’t that popular over there
@@gladio8204 Keep in mind that Nintendo’s entire audience is on a single console now. So an uptick in sales is to be expected, even if it wasn’t major.
I absolutely love seeing developers looking to make a polished game, but intentionally leaving sequence breaks for speedrunners without patching them out. The fact that MercurySteam made area loading cutscenes for every suit level in the game is actually super cool.
Definitely agree. Though those cutscenes are just in-game graphics.
When Dread finally got officially announced I was completely stricken. I had written Dread off completely, I was certain it was dead, yet here it is and I love it!
I saw Dread appear in the direct and I was bouncing off the walls
Even now, it’s still so surreal seeing this game actually exist
We dreaded the dead but we got deaded in Dread instead.
People: I…thought you were dead.
Dread: My death was greatly exaggerated.
@@amirgarcia547 Dread: SO, you’re the punk I’ve heard about
Other M: *cowers in fear*
Nintendo: Yeah sorry prime 4 is taking longer then we thought...So here's Dread and its coming out in 6 months.
I love this new era of DYKG where they just went “we ran out of facts we could find so we dug up stuff that’s never been in English before”, it does feel like you hear a lot of game facts and eventually the well of interesting ones run dry, but DYKG keeps making an effort to pull in new fascinating stuff.
It is amazing how we can have such a high quality game from a major franchise that truly seems to respect both newcomers and veterans, especially considering the lows this series has had in recent years.
mercurysteam: the madlads who touched both the "Metroid" and the "Vania"
11:10 Metroid Fusion DID have a single intentional sequence break. There's a series of shine sparks you can perform to escape the underwater section without the charge missile, it even has its own dialogue talking about shine sparks .
This sequence break itself also has an alternative route where you have to carefully angle your missiles whilst falling but it still plays the same dialogue talking about shine sparks.
We did not know gaming.
I don’t think it’s really a sequence break. I’m pretty sure the game just turns you back anyways, at least from what I remember. I don’t think you can actually fully skip anything by doing this.
That easy alternate route to the secret screen might be considered a sequence break though. You ARE skipping the “intended” shine spark route by just shooting a missile while the screen is shaking. It leads to the same place though. All it skips is the shine spark route to the secret screen, which still turns you back.

Sakamoto gets too much hate, man. Other M was a misfire, sure, but the guy really cares about this franchise. It's nice to know he never gave up on Dread, despite Nintendo not giving him the team he needed and hardware limitations.
Guy make a mistake once and Metroid fans acts like Sakamoto is a shit producer.
Besides, "Other M" was only a misfire in its dialogue, arguably some of its story, and for some being relatively more linear than the rest of the series save for "Fusion" (although I personally prefer the more linear Metroid games). The gameplay and graphics, however, are among the best in the entire series.
@@Compucles they're really not though. hell no.
Gameplay is fine except the concept of being a "3D Famicom" game is a really bad take on his decision part. Squishing 3d gameplay into a d-pad (plus a really clunky first person switch) does not goes well for Metroid that was known for its tight gameplay.
Aww poor Sakamoto.
After all the rumors and all the speculation, it was so exciting to see this game get announced
Got into the series in recent years, and so glad I did. It's so ironic that the team that "killed" Castlevania is the team that revitalized Metroid.

the part with the developers keeping an eye in the speed running community is very exiting
@@EnriqueMcQuade Don't waste your time responding to bots. Just report and move on.
@@cortos_9733 Oh, okay.
Fun fact, only one speedru applicable glitch has been patched, the invincibility glitch. BUT, the devs gave an apology for it, and explained that they ONLY did so because it's possible for casual experiences to be harmed by this by accident.
The devs are intentionally avoiding patching out other speedrun tricks and sequence breaks.
I am glad that Metroid as a series has a father figure like Sakamoto, he really appears to love his franchise and actively tries to push Nintendo to do the games despite poor sales and despite always failing in japan.
Metroid Dread is the best game I've played in years and in general it is an achievement for metroidvanias and 2D games in general
It's not a Metroidvania. It's a Metroid game.
@@mr.awesome6011 That's like saying "It's not a platformer, it's a Mario game." Metroidvania is the genre which Metroid largely helped create and remains a major part of.
It was alright tbh.
@@xKingPac it was goty
@@toooydoeur so was hades and I spent like 15 hours on it and thought it was alright too tbh. Looking back I think Metroid is better than hades but dread never wow me or made me want to come back. It’s a great game I know it is but idk I played it once and never touched it again.
The sooner you guys share that Bryan Walker interview the better.
So happy that Metroid Dread came to fruition the way it did. One of my favorite Metroid games ever.
Not often you can say this but dread benefited massively from the delay.
10:45 Dread did NOT introduce map markers. Map markers were introduced in Samus Returns
Metroid Dread is a masterpiece & the only masterpiece in 2021. The game was robbed of Game of the Year.
I'd like to see a video on some cancelled Rareware games, like Donkey Kong Racing or something.
There’s also Dinosaur Planet, even though it was technically repurposed into Star Fox Adventures.
Metroid Dread? Don’t you mean Game of the Year 2021?
Great video. Samus Returns was great, Dread was PHENOMENAL... and honestly, Mirror of Fate is pretty good too, better than the review scores it got, so I'm glad it was the catalyst for so much cool stuff.
It's nice that things actually DO work out sometimes!
I'm really impressed, this is a very thorough video. Wasn't expecting all that detail regarding sequence-breaking near the end.
Crazy to think that Mirror of Fate of all games led to Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. I actually kind of have a soft spot for that game, but not a lot of people do. If nothing else it had an ambitious presentation for a 3DS sidescroller as well as stylish boss fights. Crazy that Sakamoto was one of those people charmed by MoF, but it makes sense seeing the elements that were adapted into the Metroid games. Really happy MercurySteam were around since otherwise these games could very well have never happened, period. What a waste that would have been.
Super Metroid influencing the creation of SotN. SotN then setting the standard for future Castlevania games, off-tracking a little bit and then back to MoF. MoF then influenced Metroid SR and then Dread.
It just went full circle very beautifully.
11:52 It's actually pseudo-wave, since, y'know, wave beam is the one that goes through walls :P
It would be amazing if Dread was patched in to incorporate more sequence break cutscenes, like if you get to Corpius early Samus doesn't charge her charge beam.
I doubt that'll happen, the trend since fusion was to have it be more linear
@@sammadden5540 ???
Have you even played Dread?
@@Melkac you know what, I read your comment wrong 😅
While it's nice in theory, adding in an alternate cutscene would....be a lot.
@@jedimasterpickle3 I mean, the one I mentioned would be simple enough.
man metroid dread is a banger game
looking forward to playing this game got the steel book case. Starting the year off right with the amiibo coming in a few hours.
11:50 it's actually pseudo wave, not pseudo plasma. The trick involves shooting through a wall which is what wave beam does but since you don't have wave this early, it's a pseudo wave shot
!sashoboss
With how long and how many unlikely events lined up for Dread to make it to release, I feel like in most alternate universes of ours this video is instead talking about Dread as a canceled game.
Maybe those realities have modern quality Castlevania Igavanias.
Mirror of Fate was actually a good game. Very impressive attention to detail and solid animations. Mercury Stream was perfect for Metroid.
I know we are getting Prime 4, but I'm sad we never got that Wii U Metroid. There's so much potential with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck or GamePad. :(
True, not getting a Metroid Prime game that made use of the first-person perspective with the gamepad (much like with ZombiU) was the biggest missed opportunity of the century.
@@amirgarcia547 I feel like the GamePad could be 1st person and the TV could be 3rd person... Not sure if that would work, but it’s Nintendo, they took weird-sounding ideas before and turned them into magic!
Great video. When I first played Metroid Dread, I did see the elements of Castlevania: Mirror of Fate in the counter sequences and the cutscenes, so that's cool that was mentioned. It was also cool to hear that they intentionally put in sequence breaking. I hope this will continue with future Metroid games.
11:52 I think it's the Pseudo Wave Beam, not the Pseudo Plasma Beam :)
Having different cutscenes for specific sequence breaks is Really neat, highlight of the video for me for sure!
Metroid Dread is basically Sasquatch, and this video is using small pieces of evidence, primarily from just word of mouth of people who aren't even involved officially, to prove the case was real. It's like gaming's biggest mystery!
I was one of the few ones who were obliviouse of Dreads long history, so hearing this story now in full, is just awesome!
Dread isn't the first game in the series to have map markers, Samus Returns had markers in several colors.
Also Prime 3 technically had a marker feature, you could highlight entire rooms as green in the map if you wanted.
It'd probably be damn tough to pull off, but a DYKG talking Half-Life 1 and 2 Development would be pretty sweet.
Honestly I loved hearing that Sakamoto reached back out to Mercury steam after the initial rejection. He saw devs who were interested in his series and practically leapt at the chance to bring them on board!
The loading screens are pre-rendered?!
Considering all of the combinations of arm cannons and suits I had assumed it was dynamically rendered. That's wild.
I mean yeah. Its a genius way to make up for switch weak library. Nintendo co-developed this title and we know nintendo have the best optimization for their own hardware.
It's rare that a troubled history for a game has such a happy ending. It took a long, long while but everything fell into place.
Metroid Dread and Doom 2016 are the little games that could. The games everyone thought were dead, but when they showed up they demanded EVERYONE’S attention!
Metroid Dread was like a cryptid for so long.
Now Mercury needs to make a Super Metroid remake in the Dread engine! 🤤
they wanted to do a fusion remake before dread, we might possibly see that one day.
One of my favorite videos about this game's history is "The Complete History of Metroid Dread" by Blue on RUclips. Check it out!
You guys are on a roll lately. Loving the fresh content ✌
You guys are legends cheers
Great coverage. Really appreciate deep dives from staff whenever possible even if sometimes only articles, images or otherwise are available.
I'd say some Saturn, Dreamcast or Vita Games (note-able ones that aren't the big IPs like Sonic but a Power Stone, Sega GT or something, Kao the Kangaroo or something with some good secrets, development history or so. Being broad as there is tons to look at of course and depending on what you consider/audience appeal is up to you) would be cool. That or a console look at the Neo Geo, Wonderswan, handhelds other than Nintendo's. The more interesting niche but sizeable audience systems not just the usual.
Another quality entry in the series 🤖
Great video!
I never thought we'd ever get a 2D metroid game after the insane struggles the fans and nintendo have delt with. I was super shocked to see dread again in summer 2021 and in just a few months it was coming out.
Thank you MercurySteam
Technically, we did get a 2D Metroid just a few years ago with "Samus Returns." It's just that it's been a long time since we've gotten a *brand new* 2D Metroid game.
@@Compucles I'm more talking about a new entry not a remake.
Metroid 2 official and fan remake was such poor timing but both games are super damn good. During the OpperationDread trend that was going on I actually gifted digital copies of super metroid, fusion and one digital copy of Samus returns to my bro and friends.
The whole voting with wallet thing is kind of a grey area to do as a fanbase but all us metroid and nintendo fans had to scream loud that "yo we want metroid to stay. less mario and more metroid plz. (and earthbound, Kid icarus, starfox, etc.)"
also fun fact, mercury steam had plans to do a samus returns styled fusion remake before being asked to tackel dread.
GREAT VIDEO DidYouKnowGaming! You've outdone yourself on this one!!
This has probably been one of the most interesting Did you know that you've done. It's great that you were able to get information directly from developers as well. I vaguely remember Metroid project Dread being talked about Metroid Prime 3, but had no idea that The idea of Metroid dread was conceived back then. I'm glad that the Metroid series is getting a revival, but I'm more interested in Metroid Prime 4, as Metroid Prime was my favorite out of the entire series
My personal game of the year 2021. Loved every minute of it. I hope the good sales figures of this game means Nintendo puts forth the effort to make Metroid Prime 4 a good game. Also would be nice to get a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD on Switch.
Great work guys, love the effort to bring extra and exclusive information
I was at E3 2005 covering it for Planet GameCube (now Nintendo World Report). I recall seeing Metroid Dread listed on a product sheet along with the rest of their lineup for the show, but I don't recall any description of the game. There may have been something brief like what Craig Harris says in that quote ("Samus is back...") but I don't recall that being on the sheet. As I recall it was simply a list of games.
Bane has now got his time down to a 47.41 and is in second place currently to Satorah with a 46.44. So crazy to see that in a year how low the time has gone. Who knows how much lower it could go.
A metroidvania genre, made by a developer who made both castlevania, and metroid.
How the world have come full circle!
I can rest in peace Now
You're telling me Nintendo rejected a game similar to Metroid Prime Hunters, the best game on the DS!? Wow, that's sad. I mean, while Dread is fantastic and even though I prefer the Prime games, it is my favorite Metroid and I am thankful it was made by this team. But I can only imagine what they would do with Hunters, I've been dying for another one.
I'm amazed Nintendo's initial game title used all the way back in 2005 is the same as the final game release 16 years later.
Because its the same game . The concept and the emmi are all the same all that changed were graphics, gameplay abilities and map design.
Sakamoto also said he just really loved the title and wanted to use it
Finally the definitive story behind Dread! Thank you!
Very pleased during the chat with Oats he managed to not blurt out his catchphrase (bonerific).
But good to see Oats get some screentime!
Really wanted to see what the original DS version looks like.
I've always wanted to see it. I badly want to know!!
Hopefully another gigaleak could possibly leak what the og Metroid Dread looked like
Can I just say that konami prioritizing pachinko machines over games is such bs?
If you're a video game company, then stick with video games!
I didn't know about using the flash shift on Kraid! Guess I'll just have to play through an amazing game again.
Metroid is just so dang cool. Love this genre so much
There are definitely at least two very intentional (and fun!) skips: early grapple beam via slide jump in Dairon (which makes the early bomb possible) and early gravity suit via shinespark in Ghavoran. I hope there's at least one more we haven't found yet.
Man, Classic DYKG is such a nostalgia trip, but Modern DYKG is just different gravy. Two sides of the same very shiny coin
Amazing video ! Thanks a lot
MercurySteam are absolutely amazing developers and nintendo should give then acess to more of their IPs (or just straight up buy then, nintendo tends not to fuck around with their studios) and also found a way to solve their problems, people should be credited for their work not matter how little time they work on it
Let Mercury Steam grow without Nintendo buying them tho.
@@showmeyourmoves8551 It would take years for them to grow into a AAA studio. Hell, even Platinum has problems here and there without backing.
However, being bought out limits their creativity. Either scenario has it's disadvantages.
I feel like MercurySteam could do cool things with Zelda or maybe even revive Kid Icarus again
@Master Shifu Yeah, Zelda's in good hands. Could maybe see MercurySteam work on a spinoff or a Zelda II remake, though
And yeah, new Kid Icarus games should be like Uprising
@@showmeyourmoves8551 that is also a good option
The reason why i said that is because nintendo tends to hate bad management, which is a problem with MercurySteam, other publishers sinply dont care about it.
And you know what comes with bad management?
They bleed talent and the studio becomes shit.
Most thorough history I've seen, and I appreciate all the corrections to previous recaps.
Just hearing that intro mention exclusive interviews got me giving this vid an instant like. 👍🏼
the lore from samus returns hinting dread was freaking awesome.
This is such a good game. Metroid Dread!
I think the best part about this is that because dread was basically a rumour with next to no actual details, they could have made this exact game but name it something different and no one would bat an eye, but because it’s dread makes it more special.
Sakamoto just likes the word Dread probably
Holy shit, I didn't know that DYKG were actual journalists
Thank you for this amazing video!
Great job! Sigh... A sprited ds metroid that never came to be. That's so tragic
I had a good laugh at "hard mode WR holder Oatsngoats"
So the whole Dread teaser in Prime was just a coincidence? That's hard to believe, considering otherwise it's just...sitting there.
11:37
WHAT
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT ONE!!!
I'm on my fourth playthrough of Dread and the one thing that keeps rining true, every single playthrough, every single room, is the love that was put into this game. The Craftsmanship is top notch as well and both show through in every single pixel of Dread.
0:39 I can’t get mad at this XD
It's amazing that I've never heard of Metroid Dread. Growing up, my friends and I were massive Nintendo fans and in 2005, we entered Grade 8, the time when after school we'd play Wii in each other's basements. But then again, Metroid was never that popular among any people I knew, it was like a perk; Like, decently consistent but never anyone's first choice.
For a metaphor, Mario and The Legend of Zelda were McDonald's and Taco Bell while Kirby was Arby's and Metroid was Carl's Jr. We always wanted to try new menu items at McDonald's or Taco Bell but the others were more of a *shrug* "maybe if I'm in the vicinity."
This is the content I like
Metroid fusion has a sequence break, Adam even comments on it saying 'you weren't supposed to get here yet'.
I think that's more of an easter egg than a sequence break, since it doesn't let you acquire any upgrades out of order, because the developers intentionally lock the door to the Main Deck so you can't grab the Diffusion Missiles early (which you'd be able to do if they hadn't locked it). Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but the definition of a sequence break (according to Wikipedia at least) is "the act of performing actions or obtaining items out of the intended linear order or of skipping 'required' actions or items entirely." The hidden Adam conversation I don't think really fits that description. Or at least that's my interpretation. Cheers mate.
I feel ashamed to say.....I still haven't played a metroid game.
Can anyone recommend where I should start? And yep, I was around in the nes era.... Just missed out I guess.
Metroid zero mission on gba, then super Metroid on snes.
Honestly, just start with Dread. Super is really good on the SNES but don’t know if you can play it. The GB-GBA games are amazing but hard to find. And Dread gives you sweet little recap of the story of the previous games.
I think you can start anywhere from Super Metroid onwards. Metroid 1 and 2 are a little too dated to enjoy casually, IMO, but you can play the remakes.
I think metroid zero mission then just all the mainline 2D ones in timeline order (and whatever remakes there are as they are just better than the og ones) then try out the 3D games
start with super metroid and go up in order of released games. It's the best way.
