The Samson GO Mic was my very first microphone. I now work in radio and voiceover professionally. Hell of a start.

I had an urgent radio commercial voiceover job yesterday while away from my studio on holiday. I had no option but to use my Go Mic which I keep in the pocket of my iPad cover and recorded under a duvet.. The producer emailed back and said ‘that’s great, thanks.’ I can confirm the Go Mic is hugely sensitive to knocks, duvet rustle and cable touching and I had to use a sock to protect against plosives, but it did the job and as a professional voiceover that’s good enough for me.

@@Podcastage thank you indeed sir. My booth mic is the LA220 that I bought based upon your recommendation some time ago. I really appreciate you reviewing/reminding us of some affordable mics. Sometimes you need to use a mic that you don't mind if it is destroyed. Or you are starting a project where budget is all important. Also, I love the comparison with the ultimate mic as well. 1) gives you a great reason to own it 2) gives me a great reason why I don't need to

Learning how to 'hear' in the technical aspect, is a skill developed over time. For example, when I first started listening to music, I only got a general sense of the overall melody... it takes practice to learn to pick out every instrument individually, etc.

@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 While what you say is absolutely true, and I agree 100%, I think the OP is referring to people's mic quality using headsets. It 'sounds fine' to them because they don't have to listen to their own awful mic quality. This is a struggle I am currently experiencing with people using wireless headsets on Discord... 😓😅

recently found this beast in the very back shelf of my closet, thought I had lost it when moving. I remember being extremely excited when it finally arrived - it was an insane step up from the BM800 I was using.
Honestly I think it’s even better than most XLR microphones, I bought a Behringer C-1 when I was trying to step up my audio, and I found that the Samson was comparably better (however you have to keep in mind I was like 14, using one of those weird Chinese microphone phantom power blocks, without a decent soundboard)
nowadays I’m using an AKG Perception microphone with a Scarlett soundboard, and I am still amazed by how good the Samson compares.
I will probably pass it on to one of my friends, I want it to keep on blessing someone with what it can offer.

Thanks for sharing your experience with it. Yeah in any untreated space, most mics are going to pick that up. To mitigate the most, make sure your'e using the cardioid polar pattern on the side of the mic, then get the mic closer to your mouth to increase the signal (voice) to background noise (reverb) ratio. You should be able to get pretty decent sounding recordings, but in a completely untreated room with a mic a little bit farther away with reflective surfaces around, it will certainly pick that up. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Happy recording.

Yeah. I think it sounds better than many of the higher priced mics. The NT-USB Mini is certainly a mid forward mic which is going to be a turn off for a lot of people, but the additional support of the mixing/fx software is likely a big reason for it’s adoption rate. The Lewitt Wave 3 I think out perfroms the NT USB Mini, but it’s more than 50% more expensive and many people won’t want to pay that. I think the Rode is at a price point with a feature set that people are willing to pay even if it doesn’t offer the sound everyone wants.

I'm not professional or something but I've been using this mic for almost everything I have been recording for the last 10 months so I think I have some information that could be interesting to some people.
I bought this microphone some months ago and, while it was great at the start being compared to my phone and a really cheap 3.5 jack mic, the more I use it the more I started to realize that it wasn't that.... Great. Specially in a non acoustic treatment room.
It has this really "Thin" tone which makes the voices sound to aggressive. It requires a lot of post processing (mostly eq but you know sometimes is hard and sometimes is easy) and even though the size makes it really portable it hasn't been something I really used considering how much it requires to prepare a room in order to record something properly.
Of course having this kind of problems helped me a lot to learn how to improvise and master my recordings, but considering I want to make music and some projects mainly as a hobby, I don't really like to have such a big trouble for ended up recording something that sounds barely decent.
As I say I'm not a professional and I use this mic most of the time in a bedroom without acoustic treatment so probably your results may vary.

I have purchased the Fifine K690 in 2020, during COVID, I wanted a mic for my Zoom meetings. It was good, but it was a bit cumbersome for me to carry around. Then, after I tried my coworker's Samson Go Mic, I knew I bought the wrong one for my needs. I still think about buying one today for my future job interviews and Zoom conferences in a situation that I might have to travel around the country alot and would have to carry a mic and webcam around. Not sure that should I get the Go Video Mic instead, so that I can carry a webcam and a mic in just one piece.

Sorry to hear you ended up buying a mic you think is wrong for you, but I'm glad the video is helping inform you on what may be right for you when it comes time to upgrade. I'm not sure about the webcam option because I haven't tried it, but also, I think this mic sounds best about 4-6" away from your mouth. IF you have a webcam 4-6" away from your mouth too, that's not going to sound great. So you would need to place the microphone in a position to get a good camera angle first and then just deal with the audio that you get.

@@Podcastage Right! I haven't thought about the distance of the mic. It is clear now that it is ideal to have the webcam and mic set up separately. With post processing softwares being incredibly good now, I've found this to be a very VERY good portable voice over mic. Picks up a crap load of handling noise, though.
I still have the same one I have a decade ago but it now buzzes when you touch it. Might have to get a new one.

Unfortunately that’s a result of a good mic. Mouth clicks need to be resolved with vocal technique as well as keeping your mouth hydrated. I struggle with mouth clicks as well.

I want to use a mic to pick up the sounds of wind and rain while (hopefully) ignoring ambient sounds like boiler exhaust fans (those small round 3-4in fans on the exterior walls of domestic UK houses). Would this mic pick up the sounds of wind and rain ok if it was placed under my eave? Small trees are as close as 10ft-15ft away.

its kinda great if you want to conference call with multiple people in front of the same pc. If im alone on a zoom call I just use my 20€ earpods which have a solid microphone on them that is just closer to my mouth. even if they sound a bit more muffled I prefer to get rid of much of the reverb in bad environments

A comical video would be the teenage engineering microphone and the comparisons.
This one would be nice if there was a way to have it just on a clip so maybe mount it on a microphone to be a call microphone.
Looking at my microphone now, maybe I can clip it on to the shock mount bands?? ... thus solving the being knocked issues?
Isn't a bad mic to have as a travel mic for better quality calls, audio quality often out weights video for a more professional call

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

That would be a very expensive comical video because that mic is like $1000 I think. It looks cool, but I don't have that kind of budget for that mic. I don't understand what you mean by mount it to a microphone to be a call microphone, but yeah you can mount this in many places and use it for many different applications such as conference calls, Skype calls, discord calls, etc. I think in many instances, if you have this set up appropriately then you would sound better than most people in teams/skype/discord calls.

If you like the Snowball's sound over the Go mic, and you already have the snowball, then that's the mid you should use.
You can mount the go mic to a microphone stand though. It has 3/8" threading which is the standard boom arm threading while the Snowball has 5/8" threading which is the standard stage mic stand / floor mic stand threading.
