Learn the Washboard 1: Basics

- Learn how to play the washboard: I begin with a musical demonstration and then discuss some of the ways people play the washboard around the world. We learn our first basic washboard rhythm, a standard 4/4 folk beat. This rhythm will be the core of everything else we learn moving forward.
As an old folk guitar player, I have an appreciation for percussion. There isn't much percussion in a lot of folk music and when there is, it's way over the top. Too many washboard or rhythm bones players play like they are 1970's rock drummers. When what's really needed is someone to keep simple time, stay in the pocket and keep everyone together.
I've got a brass washboard that says "Cutler Hardware Waterloo, Iowa" which went out of business in 1922. Tricked it out with a tuna can (sounds like a snare) and a peach can (sounds like a tom tom).
Lookin' forward to learning some new tricks, 'cause the last thing our jam needs is another guitar player! LOL
Haha, exactly! I couldn't agree with you more. The percussionist should set the groove and help build and release the tension in a song. . . . And well why not, once a set, show off a little bit. . .

This is a fun video! I am a Washtub Bass player, own a few washboards, my favorite is a small handled one that I am able to wear at my side when playing the tub. Your advice to relax is the best!

The Cardenas Market Mexican grocery store chain has washboards for $13. I recently picked one up and added strap pegs to it so I can use a guitar strap.

do you have any reccomendations for a good washboard for a begginner? i see a lot of dubli handi boards and wonder if they are any good
When you are just starting anything is good, just making noise is fun, I actually started with a coffee can. The best sounding boards are zinc, most people prefer the zinc king 701. You can find them on ebay or if you're lucky at tag sale or junk shop. Good luck. Have fun.

I lived in Berlin too and the washboard seems the perfect instrument for that town: cheap, proletarian, retro chic and cool. but dont play it with a bottle opener - bottle openers are deeply uncool in Berlin - no berliner ever opens a beer bottle with a bottle opener - use a lighter or a spoon etc or any other thing but not a bottle opener!
Hahaha. Great point. I always use zinc thimbles and a zinc king board, I feel that zinc on zinc is the best sound you can get.

I love this instrument. I have an authentic washboard with a glass surface. Is this type suitable?
The glass boards are better for washing than playing. Try and look for metal one, Zinc sounds the best. The cream of the crop is the Zinc king 701. You can find a bunch of them on ebay or get lucky at a flea market or tag sale.

In Ukrainian it is called a Zatula but
Other names include rubal, rubel, kuchelka, kachanka, kachalka, rebra. In Poland it is called a Tarka, they even have a washboard festival in Poland called "Złota Tarka" or Golden Washboard.

Thanks, yeah guitar strap, although I had screws and a piece of rope for a long time first.
I live in Quebec, Canada. Where can I get one???? I came across a bunch but they're all glass. I used to play when I was in highschool and I miss it dearly.
You can either get lucky at a flea market, or just buy one on ebay, I recommend the zinc king 701.

Zinc king 701 is the best of the best. You can find them on ebay, perfect condition 701's can be a little expensive but they are much cheaper if they are worn out and beat up. This is great because the old beat up ones actually sound the best. Good luck!!

They go from 20 up to 100 dollars. The 20-25 range will be perfect.
