You did a great job in this video and I think people didn’t understand the idea of it. To me, the goal is not to replace the drums but understand what you could do in the cajon and what is the corresponding sound of it in the drums. People are so dramatic, omg.

I have drums and a cajon too. Both are fun to play for sure! For more drum-like hats and crash I use foot tambourines on my feet. Which is like playing a drum set upside down. The cajon is for certain styles though, for heavy rock, metal I need my drums! During lockdown, the cajon has been really nice to have for home practise since it’s naturally suitable for quiet playing.

I'm a Latin bassist and had the opportunity to play a cajon at a Puerto Rican bomba-fest and I absolutely loved it. I was on the edge about whether to buy a cajon or not and this video sold me. I have a drum kit available at my house for fellow musicians to use when we jam but I like the bass better. But after playing the cajon, I felt that it could love to play it almost as much as playing bass. Sometimes I play acoustically with friends where we don't have the opportunity to have a bass and I typically just play hand percussion. But I would jump at the chance to play a cajon instead! Thank you for such a great video. I dig your white drum kit. Mine's white too, but not the same finish. I like your minions, too. That was really cool! ☺

Just dont treat cajons as a replacement for drums. It is whole different instrument that you use to get that nice crispy accoustic sound usually coupled with accoustic guitar/bass. It gives a different vibe than drums and i think thats enough of a reason to play the cajon.

Cajon, makes sense. I live in a city in an apartment. There are places where a drum kit won’t fit, for reasons of space, budget, even decibels. The cajon looks like the perfect percussion for a trio that plays coffee shops, with maybe something really hipster like a ukulele and a one string stick bass, sound would get fat with harmonizing vocals. Yeah, something like that.

Such a fantastic way of relating the Cajon to a kit. I bought my Cajon primarily as a portable bass drum to play with a piccolo snare. It’s great to know that it takes on similar characteristics as that of the different parts of my kit, when I’m not around my kit, while also wanting to find out how to find it’s voice as a separate instrument. The Cajon is a fascinating instrument, but people often complain it being hard to mix because of the way it booms, cluttering up the mid bass. Using subtractive EQ to pull a bunch of low mids out of this video makes the bass section of your Cajon sound way better, and would broaden it’s application tremendously in a lot of band settings- acoustic or electric.

You can do a lot of that with just good hand drum techniques that conga, djembe, and tabla players already use. This guy plays drumset and seems to have traditional hand drum techniques also.Excellent concept.

Something else to try is drag the heel of one of your feet up and down the face of the cajon as your playing. It provides additional pitches in the sound. Works best with sock or barefoot.

Cajons are great, every time you're in need for some wood for your fire-place use one of them (joke).
OK now serious; cajons were 'invented' when slavers learned that their african slaves used DRUMS to communicate so the use of drums was forbidden. Soon the slaves used wooden boxes as a replacement for the traditional drums. Although in my opinion a cajon can hardly substitute a real drumset, it is a great addition to a percussionist's instruments. There are really great cajon players there and they can do 'magical' things/rhythms with these things. I call them the 'poor-man's drumset. Every thing is fine when it comes to create rhythm. Life is rhythm and rhythm is life.

I have like such small drum pad practice thing, but it has nothing to do with real drums, it's more for kids I guess. So I been wanting real drums forever I feel like, but my parents won't allow a real drumset, cause it's too loud and expensive, so for now I'm gonna go with a cajon.

You may not have the limit of space or money that a drum set requires. Think about how many people in the world face that right now. It's demo tape vs master tape. Think of it as a democratic approach to music. The emotional power of this instrument is no less valid for its democratic necessity.

It sure is a great instrument, but I dont think it replaces the drum... In fact, I think they'd compliment each other very well! It can be used outdoors too, and doesn't take a freakin truck to take it somewhere else like a drum does, which makes it a great advantage. But then again...
Edit - Although it's not my music style, the whole song made me see that the cajon is pretty nice for playing ghost notes.
