I am glad the musical is sticking more to historical fact and cut out Rasputin, but I really wanted to hear a Broadway version of In the Dark of the Night because that song kicks ten kinds of ass.
some of the melodies in In the dark of the night made it into the musical, like in stay I pray you the lines 'bridge and river, forest and waterfall, orchard sea sky are the same as the 'come my minions rise ever faster, let your evil shine part
I don’t see Gleb as an actual villain... He was a Bolshevik officer, law and his superiors said he had a duty, yet he couldn’t finish it because of love. He was torn apart from the beginning because he knew Anya was really Anastasia. An antagonist, yes, maybe, but not a villain.
Exactly My view as an Antagonist is different from an Absolute Villain like in the Movie Rasputin is an absolute villain, not just a simple antagonist And if I may relate this to Hamilton He is like Burr He had no intention of causing distress or hurting anyone
The moment that he falls to his knees after the confrontation with Anastasia, whispering "I can't, I can't" ...it broke my heart. He's such an incredible actor and his voice is fricking amazing
This reminds me of Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's less scary but sadder with that same tone of tragedy and conflict about a man catching feelings for the *WRONG GIRL* and having no way of dealing with it properly. It can only end badly.
I was just going to comment that! Then I saw this comment lol. But yeah I agree in both theme and melody the two are both amazing songs, but incredibly similar!
I’m liking the villain change from Rasputin to Gleb. It just makes more sense how the Bolsheviks connect to the story and not just because they shot the Imperial family.
Yeah, and I like the character Gleb better than Rasputin(cause let’s face it, Rasputin’s just a creep) plus I’d say Gleb and his character arch (that he, apparently, falls in love with Anya/Anastasia) isn’t something just randomly thrown in there. According to reports, there was some flirtations between Anastasia and her sisters with some of the Bolsheviks who were guarding them in the “house of special purpose”.
Am I the only one who didn't read this as Gleb having fallen in love with Anya, but rather he's pitying her because his father killed her family? He still sees her as a child because she was that child that his father was ordered to kill, and now he's facing the same order. He doesn't act out of romance, but out of remorse. His lines are super up to interpretation and I get how people could think he was in love with her, but I guess I just didn't see it that way.
There's maybe the smallest amount of ambiguity in these lyrics, but taken along with his other songs and lines in the rest of the musical I don't think there's a lot of support for this interpretation. But then I'm a sucker for a good "conflicted villain in love with the heroine" storyline and wish they'd put a bit more emphasis on it so I'm biased :)
I honestly prefer this interpretation. I think it fits the musical's plot a lot better than the standard "conflicted villain in love with the hero" trope, which I think is overdone anyway. It also adds another layer to his reluctance to admit she is Anastasia - because if she is, he has to cope with the guilt about her family more directly, literally looking at the face of the girl whose family his father murdered. But the love triangle is admittedly more dramatic, so.
I kinda like your interpret. Falling in love with her never sat right with me because their in person interactions seemed so limited. So I do feel this makes more sense. He's probably projecting a LOT of emotions onto Anya.
I think he is fascinated by her and is in love, but romantic love is not the only thing he feels for her - it`s also a genuine compassion towards another living human girl who did nothing wrong.
MewSakura12 well they made this play more historically accurate (it is only inspired from the movie that's why they have some songs from it) but Rasputin was dead before the overthrow of the Romanovs
Another thing is in the movie it shows Rasputin helping the anti-religious Bolsheviks win the Revolution which wasn't true at all, in fact I was also surprised to learn that Anastasia's relationship with Rasputin in real life was a very respectful relationship

It seemed to me that they had a perfectly good villain to use already and then they decided to create another one instead. But I have to say, as a fan of Ramin Karimloo I was glad to hear he was cast in this production. His performance makes me feel things.

Is it just me that doesn’t feel like Gleb is catching feelings in this song? To me it seems like he’s realizing that he sympathizes/empathizes with her, but is trying to play it off and is struggling with his duty to Russia and fulfilling his father’s legacy or whatever
Same, I’m not convinced that Gleb is really falling in love with Anastasia. They only meet twice before the final confrontation. I wish they had developed him falling in love with her more so it’s believable.
He is perfect! His voice is perfect for Phantom and Gleb! Although I love Derek Klena better. I mean, he played my two favorite characters EVER!! Fiyero and Dmitri!!

As much as I liked all the other performers, he's the only one I could see whenever he was on stage. Couldn't even focus on what he was singing, so here i am, listening to his song again. He's truly my angel of music.
@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 Well actually in terms of Andrew Lloyd Weber I meant the songs that he sings in Love Never Dies-he has a few big soul-searching ballads in that musical that Andrew Lloyd Weber originated on him
This is better than his first song. With this song, you can definitely hear Valjean (to those who didn't know, he was in the Broadway production of Les Mis as Valjean)
Gleb is in love with Anya, no he does not die. The song is this: Gleb's father orders him to kill Anya, but Gleb is torn between his duty to his father and his growing love for Anya. The song depicts his struggle to make his choice
Madeleine Miyashiro they are both in pursuit of the protagonist, they're both under the military (well not really for Javert cuz he's more of an inspector/police officer), they're both strong willed, and their motives are similar too in that they must accomplish their mission only because it is their "duty". The only difference is that gleb is influenced by his father, while Javert is influenced by the law. I don't even know if i made sense lol but i hope you got what i meant. i've never actually seen the show and the animated film.
Well not exactly, both of them fallow the law but the difference between Javert and Gleb are their motivations and the relationship with the main character:Javert always saw a Valjean like a thief from beggining to end and follow him through like 20 years always thinking that Valjean is a bad person and never have compasion for him, till the end of course and kills himself for being confused of how a person like Jean Valjean be good? And then Gleb's motivation of persuit Anya is not only because is his duty as a Bolshevick soldier and order him to do it, it's also because his father was one of the guards who kill the Romanovs and for him feels like a legacy that he has to follow. But in the beggining when he saw Anya for the first time falls in love with her and he see her as an ordinary russian woman, but when he observed her "romanov eyes" he starts to suspects and being torn bettween his duty and for his love for Anya

Anya, Dmitry, and Vlad are taking are fleeing the Soviet government and hoping to convince Anastasia Romanov's grandmother that Anya is Anastasia while Gleb (the guy singing) is chasing them.
Funny you say that since Ramin played Valjean too lol, and I can see where youre coming from but Ramin's vibrato is more natural and controlled, and he has his iconic scoops that Hugh Jackman doesnt.
Lalaine Ugpo nope... Ramin is way too old to be marius now. Also, I feel like his voice is too powerful to be marius and his acting definitely suits characters like gleb, ValJean and possibly Javert. He’d stand out too much (in a good way) as marius
Julieta Gibert i consider gleb to be a lawful evil character. he replaces rasputin as the antagonist for the broadway version because they decided to make it more historically accurate. if you've seen les mis, his character is similar to javert. gleb's morals get blurred in his attempt to fulfill his duty for russia. as an officer for the soviet union, following in his father's footsteps, gleb tries to track anya down once he realizes that she's truly a romanov. however, he ends up torn between whether anya truly deserves to die and what it would mean for him if he didn't kill her. i dont know if you wanted spoilers or not so i kept it a bit vague, if u have any further questions im more than happy to answer, i just watched this live recently so my memory's pretty solid
Julieta Gibert i get how you feel, i know a lot of people were annoyed because it's different from the story they grew up with but personally i prefer gleb as the villain because he felt a lot less one dimensional and he had legitimate motives
Julieta Gibert definitely, is this your first go listening to the soundtrack? or did you just like need a better explanation because i know sometimes it's hard to gather all the plot just from the soundtrack
The character singing is named Gleb Vagonov, played by the INCREDIBLE Ramin Karimloo. He replaces Rasputin as the antagonist of the show. Gleb is a Bolshevik officer (I believe he's a general). In the song The Neva Flows, it's explained that his father was one of the soldiers that executed the Romanov family. Gleb has orders to kill Anya (Anastasia), as she is seen as a threat to the Revolution. However, he is conflicted by his growing romantic feelings for Anya. Sorry for the rambling explanation, I hope it helped!
Nah I wouldn't really call him a villain cos there is no malice there, it's pure duty and he actually seems to have a heart, plus I wouldn't say it's like he'll fire, it's less sexual and he genuinely seems to love and care about her whereas Frollo just wanted to fuck Esmeralda and doesn't care about her
Mary McAllister yes but he's a different character to Frollo cos he actually seems to care about her (plus this song is much less sexual than Hellfire)
There is absolutely no sexual attraction. He sees a parallelity between his father and the Tsars and himself and Anya, and through this he almost sees her as a sister, after all they were both children during the revolution and the assassination
I am glad the musical is sticking more to historical fact and cut out Rasputin, but I really wanted to hear a Broadway version of In the Dark of the Night because that song kicks ten kinds of ass.

Julieta Gibert i consider gleb to be a lawful evil character. he replaces rasputin as the antagonist for the broadway version because they decided to make it more historically accurate. if you've seen les mis, his character is similar to javert. gleb's morals get blurred in his attempt to fulfill his duty for russia. as an officer for the soviet union, following in his father's footsteps, gleb tries to track anya down once he realizes that she's truly a romanov. however, he ends up torn between whether anya truly deserves to die and what it would mean for him if he didn't kill her. i dont know if you wanted spoilers or not so i kept it a bit vague, if u have any further questions im more than happy to answer, i just watched this live recently so my memory's pretty solid
kill me Thanks!!! you're right, sounds like javert haha. I was not happy with the Rasputin thing but gleb sounds interesting
Julieta Gibert i get how you feel, i know a lot of people were annoyed because it's different from the story they grew up with but personally i prefer gleb as the villain because he felt a lot less one dimensional and he had legitimate motives
kill me of course, and it's all more political
Julieta Gibert definitely, is this your first go listening to the soundtrack? or did you just like need a better explanation because i know sometimes it's hard to gather all the plot just from the soundtrack
RAMIIIIINNNN
whomever this singer is makes me think of Jean Valjean from Les Mis o.o;;
Javert singing about Valjean
Sounds a little like Michael Cerveris
First time listening, and Im so confused, wth is happening
Someone help?
The character singing is named Gleb Vagonov, played by the INCREDIBLE Ramin Karimloo. He replaces Rasputin as the antagonist of the show. Gleb is a Bolshevik officer (I believe he's a general). In the song The Neva Flows, it's explained that his father was one of the soldiers that executed the Romanov family. Gleb has orders to kill Anya (Anastasia), as she is seen as a threat to the Revolution. However, he is conflicted by his growing romantic feelings for Anya.
Sorry for the rambling explanation, I hope it helped!
So...
Villain song? Y or N?
👍?👎?
Dejay Page idk it reminds me of Hell fire from the hunchback of Norte dame ( I think I spelt it wrong) so I'll say yes it's a villain song
Nah I wouldn't really call him a villain cos there is no malice there, it's pure duty and he actually seems to have a heart, plus I wouldn't say it's like he'll fire, it's less sexual and he genuinely seems to love and care about her whereas Frollo just wanted to fuck Esmeralda and doesn't care about her
Alexis Quinn well he definitely plays he part of the antagonist hough, even if he's not evil
I am just asking if it's the closest thing to an antagonist in this. If it's the antagonist song, it's classified as a 'Villain Song'
Mary McAllister yes but he's a different character to Frollo cos he actually seems to care about her (plus this song is much less sexual than Hellfire)
KYLO REN'S SONG ABOUT REY 😍😍
Gabrielle Fabre OH MY GOSH 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
THATS EXACTAS WHAT I WAS THINKING HOLY MOLY
Please someone edit it x) Plus it could almost be Adam’s voice :3
There is absolutely no sexual attraction. He sees a parallelity between his father and the Tsars and himself and Anya, and through this he almost sees her as a sister, after all they were both children during the revolution and the assassination
AlienMidget123 no lmao have you watched the musical he had feelings for Anya he literally says he does in the musical
May I add multiple times
This sounds a bit like Hugh Jackman
