I had a training session with RH awhile back and was in half-guard bottom. I nearly died just from the pressure.
Seth Murray please tell us more. Which technique?
I know it is kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to watch new tv shows online ?
@Andy Chance Thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I appreciate it!
@Judson Layton Glad I could help :D
Roy is one of my dream instructors to train with. Im modeling my Jiu Jitsu after him. Hes so technical. He moves inches while others flail for miles. Its inspiring.
this man is a genius
Professor Harris's voice and mastery is captivating; it's like watching
Morgan Freeman or Anthony Hopkins in a climatic scene of a movie
The comment on value for money really rings very true. I've spent lot of dough going to seminars to meet and learn from well known people in the BJJ community, and just been completely underwhelmed by a general lack of originality or detail in how they approach teaching and technique, or just with giant swaths of time spent pontificating. Conversely, I've also taken the $25 dollar drop in black belt seminar from a relative no-name, and had my mind changed all-together with regard to how jiu jitsu works.
Roy was doing leglocks way before
it was popular. He's also certified in JKD.
Sage advice no doubt. Roy Harris has a beautiful approach, and his wisdom is self evident. Thanks for posting this.
great interview. Great insights on BJJ , martial arts and the sports world. His comments on BJJ in your later years really are on point and really capture a lot of that experience. Look forward to learning more of his lessons. This video helps me to more clearly define my own BJJ goals.
Wizardry! Detail on the arm bar was mind blowing!
Awesome interview. Mr. Harris's ability to teach and simplify Jiu Jitsu is one of the best.
Roy is basically just demoing horizontal Aikido. Great to see in the BJJ world
that hitchhiker's escape counter is genius
Using the nikkyo position from Aikido for the arm lock grip, very clever.
if you've seen all his footage online it is pure leverage and technique
You will never be disappointed with anything that Roy Harris puts out.
These old school guys are awesome. Wisdoms from years
roy Harris is a legend
That's been my favorite guard pass since 2002 when I started BJJ. People can spaz out, etc. but it's still really effective.
This man is the best.
"This is how I pass the guard".
Love it.
Leo Negao showed me that arm Barr detail 8 years ago. Nice episode jake.
Old school and simply clean technique.
0:26 "live in a safe city like Irvine"... clearly a shot at Gracie Barra.
Great details! Thank you, Sir!
Excellent interview, we need more wisdom promoted within the art, not just fighting techniques, there is nothing like the old school wisdom
Really loving your videos here! Keep up the amazing work!
Damn, Budo Jake almost shat himself from the pressure on that first over/under demonstration lol
wow cant wait to try this!
Awesome talk
Thanks you sifu Harris! Shout out to P5 Academy!
Tuidijutsu in Okinawan Karate uses the same body mechanics for seizing the limbs.
The technique at the end is a sankyo if i am not mistaken
Dude is Joe Moreiras best student. He is insanely good.
9.5 awesome
He's very wise
Hi. Do you know ehre can i get his instructionals?
Love the guy, it's a real master of the bjj studies. Although he has a bit of the creepy Roy Dean Aura I have to admit
He is Roy Dean's Master. He is right about leverage but it does seem to be older Nth degree black belts carrying about 40lbs of extra weight who are all about "leverage". I don't see his pass working for Jake against a 200lb opponent. His awareness and skills are also something that are just hard to learn - they come with 20 plus years in the game.
Brian Jennings Was just watching it again and noted that he was emphasizing the "how to train" aspect rather than just showing techniques. Probably going to buy his app. I think a major issue for me is finding a training partner with the patience to really work on one thing until it's fully mastered. Young guys just want to roll.
Hon Paul Roy Dean is a Master, this guy is a grandmaster
Awesome show budo jake , been to one of he`s seminars , great details in what he shows !
I've always passed guard like this, and white belts legit think they can triangle you. I've never been triangled though.
Me gusta como explica las cosas profesor harris

The elbow placement at18:18 through 19:00 seems problematic because it can be shoved off the hips to the outside, sliding in the Gi. Professor Harris says that he is not vulnerable to the triangle, but if that elbow can be moved off the hip then the triangle is right there. Putting my weight into it doesn’t seem sufficient to stop that elbow from being moved. Anyone else experience this?
the point of the elbow is slightly on the inside of jake's thigh (by having pulled the hips slightly back and contracted the abs.) He also addresses what if someone pulls the arm and tries to create the space to allow for this (putting the elbow on the outside,) by going with and beginning to pass.
brad m thanks, but the elbow and arm are still susceptible to being shoved off or pulled off. If you haven't, try this technique exactly as instructed and ask your partner to move that elbow.
I have open mat in approx two hours. i will attempt and get back to you.
I was able to give it a few tries while rolling. I was unable to get my elbow to stay like he is. I was able to time the attempt to pull out my arm to pass.
