Julian Assange freed in US plea deal, Wikileaks says | BBC News

  • After a years-long legal saga, Wikileaks says that founder Julian Assange has left the UK after reaching a deal with US authorities that will see him plead guilty to criminal charges and go free.
Assange, 52, was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information.
For years, the US has argued that the Wikileaks files - which disclosed information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars - endangered lives.
Assange spent the last five years in a British prison, from where he was fighting extradition to the US.

A real journalist should never give up his source, which clearly he has if they’ve given him a plea deal.
This could all have been over years ago if he’d cooperated instead of hiding in the embassy. It’s clear now that he was never in danger from the US authorities, they just wanted the information he’s now given them.
Someone else will now be arrested and none of the Assange fanboys will even notice.

The reason is boring, but basically - back in spring 2023 BBC significantly re-consolidated their programming such that the domestic channel, BBC News, largely simulcasts from BBC World that's based in the US. Such is the decline of television.
