Area around Oceanside Pier reopens following fire

- Officials have reopened the area around the Oceanside Pier after a fire broke out at the former Ruby’s Diner at the end of the pier Thursday afternoon. The beach and Strand from Surfrider to Tyson Street has reopened, except for a 500-yard zone directly around the pier where officials are asking boaters, surfers and swimmers to continue to avoid that area.

Oceanside Pier has quite a history. It was built in 1888 but was twice damaged by storms during construction. More money was raised, and it was completed in 1889. In 1891 it was destroyed by a storm. It was rebuilt in 1894 and lengthened in 1896. It was destroyed by a storm in 1902. It was rebuilt in 1903 and destroyed by a storm in 1908. The fourth pier was built in 1927. It was largely destroyed by a storm in 1942 and additional storm damage occurred in 1943. In 1946, construction started on the fifth pier. Storms heavily damaged the end of the pier in April 1976. Fire consumed the Pier Cafe in December 1976. A storm in 1978 and another in 1982 would severely damage the pier before another fire broke out on the mostly wrecked pier. The sixth pier opened in 1988.

I'm so glad this beautiful pier is going to be okay. It was one of my favorite places as a kid, especially on 4th of July when they launched fireworks from it.
