I exclusively use it for Rellanas Twin Moons because it looks cooler to stick a sword into the ground than it looks to do the same with a staff. It's also worth noting that when holding it in your left hand, the button to cast spells changed to L2, replacing your special moves. Either way, I'm glad they included this in the DLC, as well as the staff capable of casting incantations and sorceries.
@Sinhsseax Left handing it didn't cross my mind! That could make a cool asymmetrical dual wielding build: colossal sword in the right hand and this thing in the left for quick pokes and spells!
@@the_jersey_side It's definitely fun to mess around with in that config but is super trippy at first. You have no Ash when it's in the left hand as the Ash button becomes the spell casting button. You'd have to 2 hand in order to use an AOW
@@ByAzura no. Your argument is invalid due to the fact that PARRY SKILLS ON SHIELDS OVERWRITE EVERYTHING ELSE WHEN SHIELD IS IN THE LEFT ARM. No. The true reason is just that they have ported the Blue Flame from DS2 and COMPLETELY forgot to properly transfer the Unique Ability to the AshOfWar format, like they did with everything else. All while making the Sorcery Sword unbuffable, unlike the Blue Flame. Which is by itself a bit of @$$.
@ what are you talking about? That has nothing to do with anything. You can now parry and use spells. If it was an ash of war your could do parrys and spells with a thrusting sword instead of having to swap. Even better if you’re using Main Gauche you can parry, crit, spell cast and power stance all with these two special weapons combine. Trying thinking before commenting instead of smoking meth and rambling
Even without heavy attacks, you can actually still do guard counters. So nice to pair with a pokey shield build. Just have to hit light attack and then heavy attack almost immediately afterwords/same time. Def takes some getting used to.
@@Mr_ChAoS Indeed! Thrust damage behind a shield works surprisingly well in the DLC. Also, shield grease works mechanically and aesthetically with that build!
Glad to see someone else out there enjoying this fun weapon! Recently I've been using it with the Rakshasa set, The two Sorcery damage buff Talismans, Magic Scorpion charm and the Ritual Sword Talisman. In that config it actually gets damage slightly above the Carian Regal Scepter for certain spell types. Also, Spell combos with this is so so fun. I recommend switching out Comet for Glintstone Comet Shard and slotting Adula right behind it. Comet Shard into Adula with Impaling thrust follow up is so fun to do.
I had a similar problem where i got confused as to what spells i should put on the sword to complement the sword. I ended up putting “support” type spells, gravity spells, freezing mist, and magic shield. Pair it with either shield or another ts.
It's super funny that it can literally cast anything so long as it's s sorcery. Pick a theme, mix and match spells and test what you find fun. Though there is a bug where whatever you cast outside of the glintstone or from family (basically any spell that is not blue) the scaling is awful and does practically no damage 😅. Magna spells in particular
Weapon is just way to niche, it needs either an additional bump in sorcery scaling or some kind of unique mechanic like how blue flame made really weird builds possible, and then it would be great. But I do agree with the sentiment that fun and cool Factor should be prioritized over meta so it's still a cool addition.
I ended up using it in the off-hand while one handing the royal greatsword. It's really fun and does really good dmg on a strength-intelligence character. The spells i used were aduella's moonblade, zamor ice storm, and carian piercer. The other spells were interchangeable I also(if u like to hardswap) used the radhan's starscrouge greatsword to do heavy stance dmg. Or pull teams off ledges and cliffs.
I don't like it. It's too sub-optimal for a mage. The only reason to use it would be on a DEX build that wants to use spells post-SL150 and then the spells don't hit hard enough. Even glintstone pebble wouldn't be of much use to keep the stance-meter from a boss from resetting since the sword's stance damage isn't justifying it (impaling thrust got nerfed a few patches ago) for that sweet sweet stance breaking build.
@nilspochat8665 tbh the main impetus behind making this build is the uniqueness of spellcasting from a sword. I read after my run that this is the best catalyst damage wise around 40 int, but as a late/post game mage, you're not only investing 40 points into int lol
It's a niche weapon (one that I love dearly and defend to the grave 😂) that has to use it's vast spell pool to get what you are looking for. A stance break/critical focus build would carry spells like Rock sling, great glintstone phalanx and The Ancient Death Rancor spell. Chain casting those poise breaks what ever you are fighting. Phalanx into rock sling into Impailing thurst is a good stance break chain too. Try it out, it's different
Turning it into a stance breaking machine is a great suggestion, it's also good for if you want to do a parry and riposte strategy but cast spells at the same time, or off handing it as a poking/casting option while your main handing a heavier weapon on a build that's not optimized for sorcery damage.
@@evanbaxter7356 The stance break machine is fun and there's a few chains you can make to switch it up. It's versatile and fun. As for the offhand situation I haven't found how to make this work other than using another thrusting sword and then my brain skips when I want to use the ash but a spell comes out 😅
This thing should've gotten some boost to all Carian sorceries (perhaps 10% to all, including glintblade, sword, and moon) to compensate for it's shit cast scaling. Or, perhaps some mechanic by which if you use a sword sorcery and connect with the blade of the weapon, you deal bonus damage. Something. Anything...
When I first heard about it i thought that it would have the similar buffs to the Carian Glintstone Staff. I had fun beating the game with it, but if I ever need a high DPS casting build this is the last thing I'd whip out
I'm curious, can you pair this with an off hand carian thrusting shield? Since shield AoW takes priority over your main hand weapon, would that make it so you can use the shield ash of war on your L2, and spell cast on your R2? If that's how it works, it sounds super fun. Imagine having something like Giant hunt, piercing fang, or even crucible wings on your shield and all the "melee magic weapon" type of spells on your R2. Sounds like a banger of a moveset
@@malikhittam1440 Impaling thrust in the sword will take priority over the shield Ash of War unfortunately, just tried it out to make sure. If only the sword was infusible!
I wish there was one for incants. That would go sooo hard. I get that some of the infants are AoW (like golden vow) but stilllll WHY ISNT THERE AN INCANT SWORD?

I still don't understand why did they not just make an Ash of War the Spellcasting button instead of Heavy Attack.
I do like having Impaling thrust in the weapon, but that setup would be much less confusing to my muscle memory
It’s so you can still parry if you want

I paired the carian thrusting sword with the main-gauche. You get a cool dual-wielding moveset and a parry in combination with spellcasting.
