This weekend the Goodwood Revival is on for some more action! Plenty of fantastic cars being pushed hard by skilled drivers. I’m still looking for rubber boots as the forecast is expecting rain, rain and rain. 😅

@@_knotgood_1371 Thank you so much! 🙏🏼 It was so much fun to shift the balance and work with the weight of the car into corners and finding the right amount of grip in a bit of a drift angle out of the corners. We had a good pace, laptimes were on top in the class in that race. Such a pity we didn’t make it to the finish!

I think the guy at the beginning said" drive just for fun and do not break anything" The 300 SL was actually designed for touring races in the 1950ies not to be abused on a modern F1 race track..at one point the drum brakes ( if still original) said "Auf nimmerwiedersehen!😂

I would like to add the following comment:
The fact that Matthias suddenly had NO braking effect at all as a result of the defect in the rear left brake drum indicates that the 300SL is still equipped with a single-circuit braking system. In order to increase safety for future races, HK Engineering should definitely check whether the system can be converted to a 2-circuit system in accordance with the regulations. With this system, the impact into the tire pile could possibly even have been prevented. All in all, Matthias and the HK Engineering team were really lucky in their misfortune and I don't even want to imagine how bad the accident could have turned out, for example, at another point on the racetrack or within more traffic. HK should now definitely use the repair work to bring the braking system up to a higher level of safety and performance. Historic racing is about having fun driving valuable racing cars and not risking your health. 🙏
@@FE-oe9os Thank you very much for your feedback. You can imagine how everyone in the team felt the moment they saw a crash in the darkness involving their car catching fire. The investigations right after we got the car back to the pits led to a mechanical failure that even Hans Kleissl hadn’t seen in 40 years of racing Gullwings and being a specialist for any kind of 300 SL. Motorsport is dangerous. There has and will always be some risk being a racing driver or a spectator at the race tracks. But yes, there will be solutions to prevent anything like this to happen again. 🙏🏼

Ganz ehrlich ich kann nicht verstehen, das man mit solchen alten, wertvollen und seltenen Fahrzeugen überhaupt Rennen fährt. Die sind viel zu schade dafür.

As an amateur driver all I can say is that car did not handle well enough to be driven that way. It would seem that the outcome was more or less predictable. Of course I'm happy to see that neither driver nor car suffered greatly. I saw in the comments that the driver said he was 'looking for balance'. I think he would have found it at a slightly slower speed even though he was able to hang on until the car couldn't. Is that the goal? Well, it wasn't when I drove. I drove against the stop watch whether there was traffic or not. If backing off a second or two actually was faster, I was not surprised. Many instructors told me about that. Any counter steer was adding to the lap time. That's a hard lesson until one realizes that it shouldn't be at all.
I sure can't say why that particular car was a handful. Who knows what set up it had. It was mentioned that the brake system was a single system, not dual and therefore not very adjustable. Can you imagine trying to balance 4 drum brakes for all conditions?
My final comment is about the title. Yes, your click bait got me. Since you are hustling views then you get the peanut gallery comments. Part of the game.

Also wenn man hier die Kommentare überfliegt, ist es schon fazinierend wie viele kleine Stirling Moss es heutzutage gibt. Wir haben selber einen Pagoden SL und wer so etwas schon einmal schneller bewegt hat und dann auch (Gott bewahre) noch eine Kuve kam, weiß was hier geleistet wurde. Ich habe unter dem Titel "i crashed a..." jetzt eher einen harten Schnitzer erwartet. Das eine überhitzte Trommelbremse ausfällt, kann man wirklich dem Fahrer nicht ankreiden. Danke fürs Video, macht weiter so!

Was für ein Thriller! Bis zum Unfall sooo phantastisch gefahren. Kinoreife Überholmanöver, schöne und sehr faire Zweikämpfe und Fahrlinien wie aus dem Bilderbuch. Allein wie Du den Wagen da jedesmal aus Start/Ziel heraus durch die Kurvenkombo zirkelst, ist schon absolut irre! Man kann das alles sehr gut mitfühlen und viel davon lernen, auch und vor allem von Deinem routinierten Verhalten beim und nach dem Bremsversagen. Hut ab! Und danke fürs Hochladen dieses Videos!

Ich bin froh dass es Leute gibt, die erlauben dass man solche Schätze noch in Aktion sehen darf. :) Am Ende wurden sie halt zum fahren gebaut und nicht zum rumstehen.
Ist natürlich schade ums Auto wenn so ein Unfall passiert, aber so ist das Leben halt.

Ja, ich muss sagen, ich bin da zunächst mit sehr viel Respekt und Demut rangegangen. Solch ein Auto in dem Umfeld bewegen zu dürfen ist schon was ganz besonderes.
Im Qualifying habe ich aber nach den ersten 3 Runden so viel Vertrauen gehabt, dass die Rundenzeiten schon auf dem Niveau des Schwesterautos waren. Im Rennen wurden sie sogar noch besser. Das Auto fuhr sich sonst sehr schön und ich habe wirklich Freude gehabt die Reifen am und manchmal etwas über dem Limit zu fahren.
Ich bin ganz deiner Meinung und freue mich, wenn historische Rennautos auch artgerecht bewegt werden. Auf der Strecke war untereinander, wie man im Video auch sieht, absolutes FairPlay und respektvoller Umgang geboten. Und eine fantastische Vielfalt an tollen Autos!

Auf jeden Fall etwas, was ich in der Form mit einem 1 mill. 300 SL noch nie gesehen habe!
Das muss noch echtes fahren sein.. bestimmt ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Ich hoffe dass ihr das Auto wieder gerichtet bekommt und der Besitzer nicht allzu wütend/ traurig ist.
Ohne Leute die soetwas erlauben, würden wir auch keine Goodwood-Rennen und Hillclimbs mehr sehen.. von dir bin ich ein großer Fan von Leuten die selbst fahren oder Rennfahrer hinters Steuer ihrer Schätze lassen. :)
Und ja ich mache sogar mods für AC und will eigentlich auch bald mal streamen/ an "ernsteren" Rennen teilnehmen.
Wie findest du AC im Vergleich zum echten Auto? Und bezüglich des Realismus, gibt es eine andere Sim die du bevorzugen würdest? - von einem GT3 Fahrer wurde diesbezüglich mal RaceRoom empfohlen.

Assetto Corsa & rFactor2 sind meine Favoriten, wenn es um Fahrphysik geht. Gibt mit Sicherheit neuere und „hübschere“ Plattformen. Aber bei den beiden finde ich den Übergang zwischen Haft- und Gleitreibung am natürlichsten gelungen. 👌🏼

Mh, from my armchair i would say, the suspension was not ready for that kind of speed. In the end, the brakes too.
@@stefanmargraf7878 Setup, tyre pressure and balance in the car were pretty good actually. Apart from the mechanical failure we had a good race. ☺️ It’s I 1956 car. Can’t compare the suspension system to nowadays cars.

Really appreciate your feedback. 🙏🏼😊 Due to the construction of the tyres which are based on the rules for historic racing the cars handle with less precision, more body roll and thus more under and oversteer at the limit. Lots of work to drive on the limit. With less commitment it would be easier to handle but much slower regarding laptimes.

Having grown up near HK, i know this car since some time - and my father even once had the privilege to drive it on the road. What a shame about the accident, but I think you reacted in the best way possible - also to the fire. All in all, i’m glad you’re okay, the car didn’t burn down, and the damage looks repairable! If anyone can fix it, HK can - this is part of racing! 🏁✌🏼

Yeah, it was a fair amount of damage since the shell is build like a sculpture. But it’s a race car. So it’s going to be back on track soon. 🙏🏼😊
Meiner Meinung nach ist der schlimmste Schaden am Auto, dass das jetzt Pulver vom Feuerlöscher in allen Ritzen ist, was nie wieder wegzubekommen ist und Korrosion extrem begünstigt 😕

Respekt an den Fahrer, ich hätte das Auto nach der dritten Runde abgestellt. Das Lenk und Bremsverhalten ist echt gruselig, so würde ich niemanden ein Fahrzeug anvertrauen.
@@MrGoodvibs Vielen Dank Mr. Good Vibes! ☺️ An sich ist die Balance in dem Auto ganz gut, wenn man es zum Beispiel mit einer Shelby Cobra aus späteren Jahren vergleicht. Ausschlaggebender Faktor sind eher die Reifen, die zeitgemäß sehr viel Arbeit ins Auto bringen. So wechselt man ständig in Schwimmwinkeln die Richtung und ist an sich permanent im Unter- und Übersteuern. Der Fahrstil ist mit dem passend für aktuelle GT Rennfahrzeuge nicht zu vergleichen. Heutige Autos sind präzise wie ein Skalpell, damalige eher so wie ein Buttermesser. 😜
Der Fahrer ist gruselig, nicht das Auto.

@@C42ST3N Im Reglement sind klassische Reifen verankert, wie zum Beispiel der Dunlop Racing CR Reifen mit dem die Autos weit von der Lenkpräzision moderner Autos entfernt sind. Aber damit macht‘s auch viel mehr Spaß, da es am Limit viel mehr Arbeit für den Fahrer ist. ☺️

To be fair, it crashed itself, you didn't crash it. It's true that Mercedes hung onto drum brakes longer than other manufacturers, and it shows up when competing with disc equipped cars.
@@thephilpott2194 True. There would be so much more performance and precision in these cars. Unfortunately the disk brakes came not before the 300 SL roadster was launched. And to be period correct, we’re not allowed to change the Gullwings to brake disks for racing.

Ausgerechnet mit dem ältesten und von mir am meisten geschätzten Auto musste sowas passieren. Den Gedanken hab ich dann schnell verworfen, als ich die Flammen neben mir sah. 🙈 Wenn du magst, schau dir gerne die dreiteilige Dokumentation auf dem @BIGMAG_cars Channel an. Da wird auch gezeigt, was der Auslöser war.

@@williamlee9351 William the good thing about historic race cars is, that apart from the costs to repair the car, it keeps the value. And sometimes through race results even raises its value. But yeah, not a good feeling in that situation.

@@scotty6346 I was really interested to not let anything else catch fire that was close to a half full fuel tank. 😅
They were quick to bring the extinguisher so I could do it. That was the fastest way since the marshals would have had to climb over the tyre stack to reach the car. 🧯 So all good. I have their approval now to come back as a marshal myself. 😉

Super spectacular driving. I did not know that drum brakes are capable of getting so hot, I guess they get a lot less cooling at rear.
@@mantasisganaitis2281 Thank you very much. ☺️ Yeah the drum brakes have always been the disadvantage and issue in terms of performance and safety with the SL compared to the Jaguars of that time which even had less weight to carry. The issue was one pad letting go from the metal plate that carried it on one of the two left rear brake pads within the drum. That caused the longer way for the brake cylinder which collapsed when I started to put pressure on the brake pedal just before the corner. A mechanical failure after all. No chance to prevent this.

I don't know if I am going to have luck asking this question, also I suppose these days drum brakes and disc brakes are a lot better on these cars than they used to be back in 50s. I wonder if you have observations about how much these drum brakes fade, and how soon ? There is one pretty hard braking zone in this track, although perhaps it is not the most brakes heating track, at least not as much as for example Monza, do these brakes fade in Nurburgring ?
Fasziniernde Onboard Aufnahmen! Wie viel Arbeit das ist, diese Fahrzeuge auf Kurs zu halten - ich finde es einfach toll, dass es Menschen gibt, die sich das leisten und auch mal eine Havarie in Kauf nehmen! HK bekommt das wieder hin, da bin ich mir sicher!

Ich finde es auch fantastisch, das beim Oldtimer Grand Prix am Nürburgring und auch beim Goodwood Revival an diesem Wochenende so viele Menschen zusammenkommen, die ihre Leidenschaft teilen. Solche Autos vorzubereiten und nicht nur zur Schau zu stellen sondern sogar ambitioniert im Rennen einzusetzen verdient meinen vollen Respekt - ganz gleich, ob ich selbst hinter dem Steuer sitzen darf oder als Zuschauer mit offenem Mund bewundernd an einer Kurve stehe. 🙏🏼🫶🏼
Und Hans und sein Team haben bis jetzt jedes Mal das Auto wieder hinbekommen. ☺️
Racing is extreme use. To preserve an old car, you merely need to drive it conservatively.

@@GB-lo6qg With these old concept of tyres it’s a bit different to nowadays race cars where you want it stable and any input on the steering wheel as well as the gas and brake pedal gives you a precise feedback. Through these thin tyres with high walls the car is always somewhere between under and oversteer. So you have to shift weight to have a load transfer that rotates these cars nicely. The indirect steering ratio just adds to theses constant movements.

This type of car has very wide drum brakes on the rear axle. These drum brakes have fins casted on it, to give extra cooling. MB knew that this was a weakpoint of the car. Somehow this brake was used over its design specs and failed/ cracked/teared and blocked the wheel. (smoke trail at 27:19, of blocked wheel).
The owner will get is modified, I presume.
@@louisvanrijn3964 You’re right about the smoke you saw. But that came from the brake fluid ignited by the hot brakes, not by locking a wheel. I wish I had just a lock up. I had no brakes at all. 😅 Check out the full documentary if you like. The link is in the description of the video.
@@MattAboutCars Yes, I was looking to the footage and the smoke color. But what indicate the sparks on the photo? That are hot metal particles, I presume. It would be fine if you had added some aftermath pictures on the end of the video of the drum brake, internals and the axle. How did they malfunction? Were they indeed cracked? Were did the brakeline burst, or came the oil from? That makes the video interesting; cockpit video is nice, but plenty to find.
If the brake fluid starts to cook, the brake becomes rock hard by the boiling pressure. Did you had that impression before the malfunction?

For this type of riding you really need a top class modern break system, engine cooling and suspension. This car was not build for this, you gonna destroy it completely sooner or later. Just something to think about. Imo I would get for a F1 circle riding a different car probably.
@@MartinMartinX Track Layouts like the one in Goodwood are more in the favour of historic race cars I agree. But it all would have been fine if there wasn’t a technical failure on one of the parts of the rear left brake. The other two 300 SL made it through. @@MrUrlawyer Hi Alex! Die Streckenposten waren sofort zur Stelle und super hilfsbereit auch nachdem die Unfallstelle geräumt war. Gibt einem ein gutes Gefühl als Fahrer, besonders von historischen Autos. Zum Thema „rannehmen“: Ich bin gerade beim Goodwood Revival gewesen. Da waren wir am Ring noch lammfromm. 😇😉

@@SWright1978 Well we have one onboard which is helping for the engine bay and interior of the car (mandatory in racing) but this fire came from the left rear where the fuel lines are installed as well. So I decided to not lose any time extinguishing the fire coming from the brakes as quick as possible.
There is no visible interaction between the steering and the accelerator pedal. The wild sawing when steering also destabilizes the vehicle additional. This should urgently be improved. It's not the case that as your bank account increases, your driving skills automatically improve. Maybe practice on a kart track?

NA; die Bremsen machen es besonders hinten nun gar nicht mit, dann noch ein Tip:
Das Löschpulver muss unbedingt runter vom Auto, egal wo, vom Lack, vom Leder, vom Chrom. Bitte das möglichst sofort machen!! Das Pulver frisst sich in jede Oberfläche, selbst die allerkleinste Menge, unbedingt auch aus dem Innenraum holen.

Yeah, während die Jungs das Auto bis morgens um halb fünf repariert haben, habe ich versucht mich mit Staubsauger, einigen Lappen und Glasreiniger um den Innen- und Motorraum des Autos zu kümmern. Wir wären für das Sonntagsrennen eigentlich einsatzbereit gewesen. Aber die Lenkung hat leider einen Schlag abbekommen…
@@MattAboutCars Allerdings, ist viele Jahre her, doch da habe ich die 4er Weberversager Box in Flammen gesetzt,
fast gelöscht mit einer grossen Decke, doch dann brauchte ich doch noch einen Feuerlöscher, letztendlich das Auto in eine Garage geschoben und dann erst nach 3 Tagen wieder am Auto, wo einfach Alles auf den Löschschaum reagiert hat, besonders die Stossstangen waren betroffen. Auch die Instrumente wie Tacho, DZM usw, machten keinen schönen Eindruck mehr.
Ich dachte der Crash wäre schlimmer aber das ist ja bestimmt noch reparierbar

Erbärmlich wie sich hier manche über den Fahrer beschweren. Die bestehen darauf dass in jeder Kurve sauber eingelenkt wird und nicht korrigiert wird. Blöd nur, dass sowas in solchen Autos nahezu unmöglich ist.
Würden sich die Experten der Kommentarsektion mal Motorsport aus der Zeit ansehen, wüssten sie dass man die Karren nicht so fährt wie deren GT3-Schlitten aus dem Sinulator...

Trailbraking wie in modernen Autos easy möglich dank Renn-ABS ist in solchen Autos schon ein Ritt auf Messers Schneide. Und wenn es erst mal nass ist auf der Strecke, dann wird es richtig spannend! 🤩
Great historic car, but handles like a pig compared to modern cars. I don't need to watch a second video to know the cause of the issue - old components (rear brake) that should have been checked). BTW, it's good practice to tap the brakes BEFORE the braking zone to make sure they are there.

@@marcoromanelli6000 Absolutely. 👍🏼 It was a mechanical failure on one of the two brake pads inside the left rear brake drum which caused a cylinder to collapse and left me with no more brake pressure.

Got to say that I’ve never seen a 300SL so squirrelly! Having old technology drum brakes was always a bugbear in period for many too. Jaguar’s successes were largely aided and abetted by their aircraft disc braking systems in the 1950s. Lister Jaguar “Knobblies” like the example dicing with the Merc also utilised Girling inboard disc brakes.
It’s worth noting that Iin the days that such cars raced, circuits didn’t have kerbs so the suspension didn’t get tortured lap after lap either.
Yes true, tracks were very different. Safety of them and cars too was way lesser. I think today these cars also has little bit better tire compounds, little better brake lining compounds, better oil, perhaps also better fuel. Eventually they are not only faster, but also pushed more over the limit than they would have ever been back then.
I like this kind of driving style, shows what cars can do very openly. I don't like smooth slow steady hands driving as much.

And yeah, brakes, weight and power were mostly not on the level of some of the competitors like the Jaguars or Listers which I enjoyed to be overtake by given the sound right in my ears! 🤩

Yeah, it’s very challenging for these cars at the Nurburgring GP Track Layout with the 24 h version chicane which is even slower than the GP version of turn 1 and thus stresses the brakes even more.
Compared to a much more floating track layout of Spa for example where you have a long braking distance up the hill of Kemel Straight and another hard one for the bus stop chicane with more time for regeneration of the brakes during the lap, the Nurburgring at high temperatures is a combination that doesn’t pay in positively into the drum brake components.
I’m just leaving the Goodwood Revival wich hat a Track layout wich suits these cars perfectly. It’s technically but leaves the car and tyres in a flow with just two longer braking distances. But even though we have seen brake failures this weekend. Motorsport is dangerous. Especially with these old beauties.
Body just front left corner and the technical issues. Given the fact that with this car it's more about race and fun over concours kind of treatment let alone appearance it's not a big thing what happened. Everybody racing such a car should be prepared to maybe end up in the wall and - then - shouldn't be worried too much as his pockets provide for instant cash flow.
@@janstrau8476 Absolutely! 👍🏼 Affording a garage queen is one thing. Racing it generates costs from insurance over preparation up to crash damage. That is part of the game. Even if you don’t risk too much, things like this can happen. I’m glad there is still enough owners left to let their cars run in competition and people coming to the racetracks valuing to see them being raced. ☺️🙏🏼
Was der mit Gaspedal und Lenkrad aufführt ist geistesgestört. Er überfährt das Auto andauernd und ist nicht ansatzweise in der Lage, das wertvolle Stück im Rahmen des technisch Möglichen zu bewegen. Das Endergebnis ist lange vorher absehbar, aber nicht mal nachlassende Bremsen werden bemerkt. Da kommt Fremdschämen auf. Ein Schulungsvideo zum Thema "So nicht!".
Nachtrag: Zudem zeigt das Fahrverhalten eine untaugliche Bremsbalance durch dauerndes Überbremsen der Hinterräder. Der Schaden ist Beweis dafür und da sollte man vorher aussteigen. Kreuz und Quer in jede Kurve rein und am Kurvenausgang überholen leistungsschwächere Fahrzeuge...?!

@@rong.7768 Ein Bremsbelag, der sich in der Bremstrommel hinten links von der Trägerplatte gelöst hat. Darauf folgte ein Bremszylinder, der ins Leere drückte und geplatzt ist. Ergebnis beim Einkreisbremssystem: Kein Bremsdruck mehr. 😬

Alles in einem ist es eben in meinen Augen das gewisse Risiko wenn man Rennen fährt (besonders mit älteren Autos). Nett fand ich aber das der Streckenposten extra nochmal nachgefragt hat ob er dich mit dem Feuerlöscher verletzt hat.

Bei der VLN bei Wind und Wetter den ganzen Tag draußen zu stehen und uns aus der Patsche zu helfen, wenn es brenzlig wird. Ich freu mich immer, wenn wir uns im Fahrerlager sehen. Lieber als an der Strecke. 😉

Viewing all those steering wheel corrections at corners and braking could be as bad steering geometry, as a wheel with no advance in caster? can fit best grip tyres? Bad luck with the rear brake problem, can be no so much damage, repair it.
@@jarripotero8535 Totally agree with you if it was a modern race car. This is a 1956 Merc which is pretty limited in adjustments to the suspension systems. Especially at the rear. Fitted with a racing tyre based on the concept from the 50s (Dunlop Racing CR65 if you want to look for it online) there is not much connection to the road. So there is a permanent correction needed at a very indirect steering ratio when the car is shifting weight. The car’s going to be fixed. It’ll be fine for the next race. ☺️🙏🏼

@@lutzgrunow7041 Die Feuerlöschanlage ist fest verbaut. Mit dem Griff in den Beifahrerbereich, den du siehst, habe ich den Feuerlöscher aktiviert, der sich auf Motor- und Innenraum auswirkt. Hinten links verlaufen die Benzinleitungen zum Tank. Gott sei Dank waren die Sportwarte schnell zur Stelle. 🙏🏼

C'est pour cela qu'ils m'ont laissé des motos et des voitures qui n'ont laissé personne.

Either a poorly handling car or an incompetent driver or both. Neither one ever looked stable.
Or incompetent commenter. Depends on what is your paradigm of well handling car - much downforce, tires that wear down in 20minutes, CG on the ground, 5meters long and wide, packed up with electronics and so on.... then yes, this car is not handling as well as those.... TO YOU. To me it looks like it handles better, and does it while actually being a car, and not a spaceship designed for 20minutes of fast stints with minimal drivers involvement. This being said, obviously this is not 300SLR, and it is not something from late 60s, when IMO racecars peaked.
It has swing axle rear suspension. It was made in 1956 and runs on tires that are 185mm wide.
Educate yourself on history. This is what racing used to look like.

Yes he did. He lost the brakes spinned around and crashed in to the guardrail.
So to me he crashed.
But friendly speaking I am not a native speaker and my english is far away from beeing very good. So please tell us how the head line should be like to mean:

@@MattAboutCars Juan Manuel Fangio wasn't constantly turning the steering wheel hysterically and shaking his foot on the accelerator. He was able to keep such vehicles balanced while drifting, accelerate sideways out of the curve and straighten the car out again without wobbling. The brake pads were much worse back then, as were the tires. You can't buy skills with money.

Shonkey upkeep of the car prob caused it, my car has 450hp, drum brakes and no servo made in 1968......you have to know how to drive drum brake cars, what happened.....a £30 flexy hose let go?
