Driving Through Sequoia National Park - California

  • Many park visitors enter Sequoia National Park through its southern entrance near the town of Three Rivers at Ash Mountain at 1,700 ft (520 m) elevation. The lower elevations around Ash Mountain contain the only National Park Service-protected California Foothills ecosystem, consisting of blue oak woodlands, foothills chaparral, grasslands, yucca plants, and steep, mild river valleys. The region is also home to abundant wildlife: bobcats, foxes, ground squirrels, rattlesnakes, and mule deer are commonly seen in this area, and more rarely, reclusive mountain lions and the Pacific fisher are seen as well. The last California grizzly was killed in this park in 1922 (at Horse Corral Meadow). The California Black Oak is a key transition species between the chaparral and higher elevation conifer forest.
    At higher elevations in the front country, between 5,500 and 9,000 feet (1,700 and 2,700 m) in elevation, the landscape becomes montane forest-dominated coniferous belt. Found here are Ponderosa, Jeffrey, sugar, and lodgepole pine trees, as well as abundant white and red fir. Found here too are the giant sequoia trees, the most massive living single-stem trees on earth. Between the trees, spring and summer snowmelts sometimes fan out to form lush, though delicate, meadows. In this region, visitors often see mule deer, Douglas squirrels, and American black bears, which sometimes break into unattended cars to eat food left by careless visitors. There are plans to reintroduce the bighorn sheep to this park.

    I am enjoying this video. I see where some people have complained about your choice of music. It's YOUR video. You can use whatever music you want to use. I like the classical music.If they don't like it, they have two options: either mute the sound or stop watching the video. Thank you for posting this. It will take me awhile to finish it but I am enjoying it a lot!

    I have taken this drive twice...once in 1973 and again in 1996. My mother, father and grandfather were there the first time...just my dad the second time. It is worth the trip. I live near Toronto, so it is not a short drive.:)

      How many hours from Toronto to Calif?

    • @bubbagump1204
      @bubbagump1204 6 лет назад +1

      About 41 hours to Sequoia National Park from Toronto...driving. If you can handle driving 8 hours each day, it would take about 5 days.

    Thank you for the beautiful Sunday afternoon cruise. I have wanted to go here my entire life. This may be as close as I ever get. Not quite as I pictured in my mind. It seemed as though the abundance of real "monster trees" were at the peak of whatever mountain was crested at around 42:00 in. The trees at 44:13, beside the car at 44:21, and the people standing beside the trees on the right at 55:59 are what I expected, but I expected a far greater number of them and denser population. More like a forest of them. Idk. Hard to get a true perspective from a dashcam. An amazing view of the horizon at 39:45. Waterfall?? on the right at 12:30. May have been the 1st time girl at 34:38 ever wore shorts outside. Definitely a tourist not from sunny California... It would be a humbling experience to stand at the foot of such a magnificent, living, breathing creation as those trees at 55:59. Thanks again.

    I'd REALLY like to ask NPS, what's the big idea of killing ("Controlled" Burning) all of those Ponderosas, well before Giant Forest-Lower Terrace?? Much of those particular spots look way to steep, and are maybe a bit too arid for proper Sequoia propagation. I usually thought that White Fir was usually the biggest problem, in denying Sequoia seeds the chance to germinate. It starts to improve Pinewood and beyond, though. Speaking of this drive, I believe that Amphitheatre [Creek] Grade, from Hospital Rock--about 2,700(?) Ft.--to Giant Forest-Main Grove Entrance--about 6,300(?) Ft.--is one of the most radical grades--at least in California, and this segment does it in roughly only about 10 miles. It only seems that you're on it for an eternity, due to the tightness of the curves, and the constant switching of slopesides, in order to climb or descend it. And our gratitude for this road's construction goes to Units of the U.S. Army's all African-American "Buffalo Soldiers", who for most intents and purposes, served as the Ranger Corps, before the Park Service proper, was created/initiated, 100 years or more ago.
