It's interesting that you say listening to this music is like a time machine. Because Al Stewart also seemed to be very interested in the past and history. Like the song "Time Passages" and in this song "Year of the Cat" he's transporting us back into a 1940's film. A Casablanca-like film. He even mentions Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. Al seemed to be enamored with the past in his songs.

Agree! Al Stewart sings history in many of his songs, I asked JB to react to Roads to Moscow. The video is disturbing but it tells the story. Nostradamus is another of his songs that is historical. 👍

Right on - this is one of my favorites. Back in the day when you went to an actual stereo store to buy your gear, this is one of a handful of songs you had to hear before deciding on what speakers to get.
And you’re so right about the “70s vibe”. I lived it, so it brings back lots of great memories, but I can see how the music can take you there. It was a great era for music, no doubt.
Another one you should check out after “Time Passages” is one called “Midnight Rocks”.

Almost every song you have been reacting too I am familiar with and listening brings back very vivid memories of a point and time in my life - not just where I was and who I was with, but the weather, how it felt and what all my feelings I had then come rushing back (happy, sad, boy crushing, etc)...

They would have awesome listening rooms set up so you could hear a variety of their best receivers, turntables and speakers. I'm a metal head but I think this is my favorite song, mainly because of 2 distinct memories. 1st: I had a dream that me and my brother just finished watching a movie that cats took over the world and this song was playing as the credits rolled. When I woke up this song was on the radio. This was probably in the 80s sometime. 2nd: Being a big Art Bell fan I listen to his show often, he would play this song often and when that sax solo came on he would drop what he was saying and listen. I think it was his favorite song too.

The lyrics on this are astounding...'She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain' - awesome. You commented about the 'time machine' nature of listening to these old songs. It is. They used REAL instruments back then (mostly) and NO auto-tune. The music business was competitive in a whole different way. It was okay to put out music that challenged the listener and didn't sound as generic as a lot of today's stuff is.

I have always been exposed to classic cinema and between Bogarde and Cagney you don't know who's better but Peter Laurie contemplating a crime is something else.As a African-American middle-age man I love all types of music from earth wind and fire to Hank Williams Junior and Senior. But this is such a classic song my friend and I saw Al Stewart in Las Vegas about 10 years ago and he actually spent time after the show with us to sign autographs and just Talk to us about film and music. This makes me think you might want to listen to some jazz. There are a lot of different types out there. Back in 74, I was going with a guy who was in the high school jazz band & he introduced me to some good music. Weather Report "Birdland", Chuck Mangione, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock (his Rockit came out later but is really good). The Dave Brubeck Quartet "Take 5" was on every jazz band's playlist. Then if you want some R&B/Funk/Jazz, try The Average White Band "Pick Up The Pieces" or anything else from the AWB album. If you want to go more horns with Rock, Chicago is a favorite band of mine. Or then there is Santana for the Latin flare. All of this comes from the jazz roots you hear in Al Stewart's songs.

For a 1970s person like me, the song took us back to the 1940s! The lyrics are very nostalgic about old movie references:
...”On the morning of a Bogart movie, in a country where they turned back time...”
    or:
...”She goes slipping through the crowd like Peter Lorrie contemplating a crime.”
...and the arrangements are like a lush movie soundtrack

You're so right about music being a time machine. I close my eyes and listen to this and I'm right back to the 70s, smelling incense and patchouli in the room.

As I think back, look back compared to today, the musical creativity was outstanding. Singer/Song writers, from soloist to full bands. It would just flood off the radio every month something special would play. I don't hear the same measure of creativity or volume of good work today, with the exception of Christian praise and worship which is a narrow market most know nothing about. They are having a golden age of good songs ever since 2000 till today.

Please check out Cat Steven's work. He was one of the most significant composers and singers in the 70's. "Sad Lisa", "Wild World", "Lady D'Arbanville", "Matthew And Son" to name some of his hits.
He also has written the song "The First Cut Is The Deepest," that has been covered by many artists, including Sheryl Crow 2003.
