Just about to turn 64 in about 3 weeks, and didn’t realize till just now how cool this song actually is- Time Passages and Year of the Cat were always my go to’s- but have always loved Spanish guitar- love this one the rare times it would come on the radio! 🥰🎼
I was fortunate enough to see Al Stewart live in London at the end of 1978. Was already a fan but didn’t realize what a spectacular guitarist he is. Played a guitar piece with a fellow musician that just blew me away. Never heard it since, but watching and listening live was something i will never forget.
Oh my God. You truly were extremely fortunate to see him and the band at a live concert. My pitiful little self was in America just loving All of his Music and sharing with my friends. ❤
Saw him with Dave Matthew’sas warm up in Preston in mid eighties. Only about 50 in the audience, so he beckoned us round and played requests and answered questions in between. He had six Ovation guitars in a semicircle around him and boy did he work them hard. After Dave’s 3/4 hour, he came on for 1.5 hrs then Dave joined him for some folk classics. After a knowledgeable question about the songs gestation he even played some of Year of the Cat with alternative Tony Hancock lyrics. It was a once in a lifetime concert

I can not describe , how can a song be so beautiful and wonderful , with great memories , from the past. His voice, his tenderness , and lyrics are so special and unique . Love him a lot ! such a soft song.
Fell in love with al stewart with the year of the cat, 1963 the year I was born. Bday present, the album. Finally I am going to see him March 29 2024! Yay
I HAD the privilege of seeing Al Stewart in the 80s and i have to say was one of my favorite concerts to date.. he is a timeless song writer and his voice is heavenly sent
Yes, a timeless writer who writes for all of us. Had to reply because I also had the chance to see him in the Nineties and he came up to me and said, "I saw them when I was a lad" as he pointed at my "Hawkwind" t-shirt.. that was cool and unforgettable. One of our great artists waiting to be discovered is what is amazing.
Such a fantastical journey back to yesteryear. I have said it before and will again.... a true legend. Not very many are able to find the balance between the song, its lyrics and a story that grasp you. However they do this, time and time again....well done! Your melodies shall span legendary status amongst a multitude of generations.

Born in 1961. I had the best of most worlds. Brought up by my parents on Beatles, Kinks, Dionne Warwick, later beach boys and a load of other great 60's music. Then heavy metal in my early teens. And followed by punk at 16 then New wave and indie music by 20. Awesome stuff and hundreds of gigs watched. My music tastes are very broad as a result. Al Stewart was great. Year of the Cat always a go to song.

So lucky to have been a teenager in the late 70's. I pity the kids today with their rap music. Although rap is powerful (when they are older), their songs will not make long for the beauty, innocence and tenderness of youthful love.

The fishing boats go out across the evening water
Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border
The wind whips up the waves so loud
The ghost moon sails among the clouds
Turns the rifles into silver on the border
On my wall the colours of the maps are running
From Africa the winds they talk of changes coming
The torches flare up in the night
The hand that sets the farms alight
Has spread the word to those who're waiting on the border
In the village where I grew up
Nothing seems the same
Still you never see the change from day to day
And no-one notices the customs slip away
Late last night the rain was knocking at my window
I moved across the darkened room and in the lampglow
I thought I saw down in the street
The spirit of the century
Telling us that we're all standing on the border
In the islands where I grew up
Nothing seems the same
It's just the patterns that remain
An empty shell
But there's a strangeness in the air you feel too well
The fishing boats go out across the evening water
Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border
The wind whips up the waves so loud
The ghost moon sails among the clouds
Turns the rifles into silver on the border
On the border
On the border
On the border
