    The terrain-hugging Mig-21ambush approach was enough of a threat that the West developed look-down radar and datalink systems to counter it, which first proved their worth in the Bekka Valley Turkey Shoot. In a contemporary setting, it is a way for Noobs to die, but something to really watch out for in a historical WW1 thru Vietnam scenarios.

      So is this how he remained hidden from radar? Because he was too low for it? Do the radars from this era only pick up planes above a certain altitude? Would they pick up a plane on his 6?

    • @Nocleverpuns
      @Nocleverpuns 3 года назад +6

      @@Darrel_Owen this is very oversimplified but here goes.
      Broadly speaking flying low reduces the range at which ground radars can detect planes due to curvature of the earth, clutter and terrain ext.
      Flying low also makes it harder for airborne radars, again because of clutter. Remember also these are relatively crude radars of the 50/60s.
      In this case, he's low to make it hard for the ground radars to see him. The f5, like most planes, only has a front facing radar so as he comes in from behind they can only detect him visually or by his radar emissions.

    • @Rokaize
      @Rokaize 3 года назад +4

      Right. That’s how you survive in the long term. Hartmann was by many accounts a below average pilot in terms of handling his aircraft. Crashed numerous times on landing as well. Never heard anything remarkable about his dogfighting ability either.

      @@Rokaize Exactly. There were pilots who were way more skilled at actually piloting, Hans Joachim Marseille for example, but Hartmann's prowess was his great teamwork abilities and ambush tactics. He wasn't even that good of a marksman, he would only start firing once he's point blank.
      Yet he's the highest scoring ace. Truth is, aerial combat is tactics and trickery more than sheer dogfighting.

    • @Rokaize

    2:50+ Its not that missiles are unreliable, its that they have limited range. Launching R-60 at ranges greater than 1.5 km (or 1 km when bogey is running) on deck is not going to work. R-60 can maneuver but it cant really chase. R-13M / M1 while have a bit better range, are not as maneuverable as R-60. So you need to know your missile performance and optimal launch conditions.

      Most aircraft from the same country have a similar control-flow and the systems generally work the same.
      If you stick to one of them long enough, you'll be very familiar with it.
      And other things just straight up are basically the same across the board (with exceptions).
      For example: To use a weapon you will generally have to unlock the master arm and select the correct pylons to the corresponding weapons.
      The flow is basically the same for every aircraft.
      Now it's just a matter of understanding what you want to do so you actually know what to look for.
      Once you get the hang of systems operations and different methods of ordonnance delivery it gets easier.
      Master one aircraft and then go "up" in that line.

    ....This kind of scenarios happened often over Korea and the early phases of the Vietnam conflict. Then the US invented something called BVR combined whit AWACS tehnology. Since then ww2 style dogfighting performed with jets remained the privilege of the flyers fighting for the freedom of the open Savanah in Africa ...anywhere else who ever tried to challenge was unable to make home for dinner to be able to talk about it....

      Umm MiG-21 was not a thing in Korea. Learn the history.

      @@rokog5308 hi I was taking about the tactics used not the type s of aircraft - Korea was the swansong of piston driven fighters and the dawn of the modern jet fighter which used clasic WW2 dogfight tehnics .as i said. The MIG 21 was an Vietnam era fighter.

    Talking about aircraft visibility it'd be interesting to see a Video with the Folland Gnat. I read somewhere Indian pilots had a devil of a time keeping eye's on them.

    If you hadn't pointed it out in your video where you talked about your PC upgrade, I wouldn't even have noticed it. But now I can't unsee all the rubber banding going on. I'm sure the 3080 will improve upon that.

      It does not, unfortunately. I believe one of the third party studios have said the intend to develop an F-4 module, but I doubt we'll see so much as a release date before the end of 2022. Next three modules we're expecting to see are the Hind, the Apache, and the Strike Eagle.
