An unexpected announcement from META to open up their hardware & Software platform to third parties could be good news for VR/MR/XR users. Spoiler alert - it's not VR for Xbox.

Microsoft shout do a 3rd party VR solution. Even license FlattoVR (dont buy them) tech to implement VR in Unreal games would be excellent!

This can be a good or bad thing, like so many, my guess for this decision is to head off the Google / Samsung deal for a new HMD, both Google and Meta are huge and evil companies that want nothing more than to mine your data. As for the Microsoft part, it's a pathetic joke, all it'll be is a rebranded Quest 3 with new Xbox colors, personally, I don't use a VR HMD to play flat panel games, I can do that at my computer monitor without having a brick on my face. LOL
As for 3rd party HMD builders, will Meta share their patent for their Quest 3 pancake lenses with these partners since a HMD is only as good as it's visuals, also any HMD coming from a 3rd party will be more expensive since they can't afford to sell them at a loss. My hopes, these partners also install Display Port capability for us PCVR users, how sweet would the Quest 3 be with a direct DP connection. LOL
Right now, all the fluff might sound great, let's wait and see if it actually works out that way in time. I'm all for VR advancing, I am NOT in favor of one company dictating how things will work and be used (Zuck's vision).
