    Welcome back to RBR guys! And to The NEW #MercedesAMG SL 43 - a car that really peaks my curiosity and gives me anxiety! Why? Because this is a car where AMG have removed their AMAZING V8, and replaced it with a 4 cylinder engine.
    I’ve been trying to drive this for over a year, as there have been no reviews on it - As your Mr AMG and general AMG addict, the new V8 SLs are my favourite AMGs currently on sale, next to the new AMG GT. But the thing I loved most about those cars, WAS the V8! So what is a car that removes all that emotion, going to be like? Having violent flashbacks of the C63? I am too.
    So as you know, the SL is now totally made by AMG. So where in the past you had a Mercedes Benz SL 500 or SL 350 - or even the SLK or SLC - those entry level cars no longer exist. In replacement, is an AMG version - the SL 43.
    As it’s totally AMG made, the car benefits from a lot of what makes the V8s great like the standard AMG ride control suspension, active aerodynamics, 9 speed multi clutch gearbox, and all of the interior benefits. What it doesn’t share however, is the 4matic system, instead we have the only rear wheel drive SL you can get at the moment, which helps saved weight alongside the engine of around 50kg.
    Then the engine, we first reviewed in the C43. Which was a car I really enjoyed. Rather than the Mercedes built v6 of the past, this is a one man one engine hand built engine, shared with the new C63. That means it gets the engine plaque by the engine builder. This was the first road car to integrate the E-Turbo - a turbo charger with an electric motor derived from F1.
    The electric motor drives the turbocharger before the exhaust gases get a chance to - making this feel extremely responsive! That paired with the M139L 4cyl engine makes a confusing 381 BHP, 480NM and a 0-60 of 4.9 seconds. Why is this de-powered vs our other 43 cars? Makes zero sense in a 100k car.
    The Roof is the new fold vario roof, soft top like the GT Roadster of the past, and 21kg lighter than the old hard top able to be retracted at speeds up to 37MPH. Design wise, it is quite close to the V8 versions - in standard it get’s it’s own front end and you get round pipes as opposed to the bigger ones of the V8s. And in other territories you can get the AMG dynamic plus pack, with active engine mounts, electric rear slip diff, race mode, lower suspension and yellow calipers - which is what our car today has.
    On paper, it’s kind of like going to McDonald’s, and ordering a cheeseburger, and taking out the patty. Sure it’s healthier, and a little cheaper - but how satisfied are you going to be at the end of that meal??
    Today we’re going to see just how much emotion and AMG character remains in this bright Sun Yellow car - by checking out how well it’s spec’d, testing the exhaust sound, the dynamics and the open top experience!
    Up next on on RBR is the new Cayenne Turbo E Hybrid Facelift and MUCH MUCH More!! Subscribe to support us and see them first. :)

    1) I agree with you on the lack of the I6. It's beyond me why they seem to be phasing out that sweet engine. It could be the perfect middle ground. 2) The interior being a "blend of analogue and digital" is straight up B.S. The few buttons in there are capacitive garbage instead of knurled metal. WOW you put climate vents . . . that doesn't count (though they are pretty). While I straight prefer last-gen Mercedes interiors, I am warming to the SL and the 224 E-class (no superscreen). I believe there are rumors that they will be reverting the capacitive touch in the facelifts. Also, I heard they are expanding the Maybach treatment to more cars - which is great because as of now, there are no ultra luxury coupe/cab options. Nothing in the lineup even comes close to the Outgoing S-Class or E-Class Coupe. The SL doesn't cut it. The CLE is shameful trash! Although, if they Maybach-ized the CLE, I think it could be stunning :) Fingers crossed for that!

    • @dash-ryan
      @dash-ryan 9 месяцев назад

      I agree with almost all your comments. I think the reason why there is a 4 cyl is because of international market requirements and AMG doesn't have a hand built 6 cyl. From a cost standpoint, it's cheaper to build an I4 and a V8 which is essentially 2 I4's connected together. So reasons are cost reduction and regulation adherence, although you'd never tell given the ridiculous price. Pricing is where Mercedes is making its biggest mistakes and they'll find out soon enough about this. I've already complained to my local dealership. They are hearing this loud and clear, so let's see.

    • @tool8337
      @tool8337 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@dash-ryan you’re right that they are pushing the 4cyl for EU emissions regulations - but other manufacturers are bringing out compliant 8 and 6 cyl. Mercedes particular 4cyl and the inline 6 offered in the 450 models are almost identical platforms with 2cyl chopped off. They are made on the same assembly line. The 4.0 v8 is a completely different motor but they spent a bunch of money making it EU compliant. I bet they will change their tune when they see there’s no interest in the bad sounding 4cyl

    The elephant in the room with this car and with all the new SL's is that horrendous screen plonked on the centre console. MB used to be good at producing a good integrated dashboard. If they want a lesson in how to integrate this type of tech they should check out the Audi Q8. Audi have made a reasonable stab at integrating two screens, one above the other that looks OK if you are into this type of tech in a car. Also, incorporating so many controls in these screens is a real backward step. Plus the 5 minutes it takes every time you get into the car to go through the menu system to turn off all the nanny safety controls and the fact you have to do this every time you start the engine makes it a non starter for me. Cars made today with this tech will be so expensive to repair, and in some cases unable to be repaired in the future due to advancements in chip and computer design. I work in electronics and I am told by digital designers that I should produce a new design every 2 years as the chip companies only make a certain number of devices before the next generation is available, so original parts for these cars will become very difficult to get. Under the current MB strategy you won't be able to use spare parts from another car due to the computer codes needed for changing the most basic of parts, means these types of cars will become uneconomical to repair sometime in the future, probably the second or third owner will experience this.

    Those rear seats are ridiculous and good for nothing but throwing your coat on. If you’re 6 foot tall you won’t even get your young children in there, our 2003 SL had a flat top to the lockers where you could put two suitcases secured by their own seat belts, (nice design touch) ideal for Continental touring.
    I thought the whole point of a soft top was to save weight and give more boot space, it seems here they’ve managed neither, 21kg isn’t worth anything in a car this weight, so lose, lose. RIP the fabulous vario roof.
    As for the massive screen, I realise this panders to the screen obsessed generation who can’t walk down a pavement without staring into one but it does nothing for ergonomics or safety. I’ll take buttons every time, thank you.
    My recently purchased 4.7 V8 twin turbo from a main dealer has covered just 12,500 miles from new with full dealer history, it cost way less than half the price of this car, I don’t think I’ll be trading it in for an AMG “SL” anytime soon.

      I see it exactly the same way. The SL was always a dynamic car on the outside, but at its core it offered S-Class level. At its core, this car needs a smooth-running 8-cylinder engine without any banging effects (Sl 580). What strikes me is that the car lacks presence on the road - it looks like an SLK and has lost a lot of its visual and tactile value compared to its predecessor. This also applies to the new E-Class. The cars look cheaper than their predecessors.
