I just got fitted and chose the JPX 923 HM with 460 Recoil F3 shafts. I am 65 with a 4.7 index and have been playing the JPX 900 Tour irons with Recoil 660 F2 shafts for the last several years. While I scored well with the 900's, my distance suffered. I was hitting my 7 iron in the 155 yd range and I play with a lot of younger players who are 2 clubs longer than I am. I wanted distance without giving up accuracy. My 7 iron now is just over 170 yards consistently and my ball flight is straighter than ever. This is my 4th set of Mizuno's and I feel as if I have found the fountain of youth. Thanks Mizuno!!!!
I’m 62 and have a 23 handicap. My swing speed with a seven iron is 76 mph. I’ve just been custom fitted by Mizuno and approached the fitting very open minded but have to admit I was hoping I’d walk out with the Pros. I couldn’t believe how well I hit the HL’s and fitted with the Neo Pro shaft was bang on centre strike. This was a huge improvement over my usual toe strike. Mizuno have absolutely nailed it for those struggling with launch due to a lack of club head speed. I did hit both the Hot Metal and Hot Metal Pro’s but the HL’s were a clear winner. Just waiting on my order to arrive now 👍🏻🇦🇺
Same here Grant, I’m 65 with a 9 handicap, and my best was with the high launch. Mainly because of the stopping power. 7 iron avg during the fitting was 155 carry and 162 total. Even better on the course. I’ve played about 10 rounds with them and picked up a solid 2-3 GIR. I didn’t get the GW, but I might order one. There is a big difference between my PW and my 50* Volkey. I did get a 4 iron in the HM and weakened it from 19 to 21 degrees. And it’s a beast.
@@budbeasley221 I actually got the set from 5 iron to sand wedge with a 4 iron replacement ( 20 degree flyhi hybrid ) which I absolutely love hitting. Like you, I love the high flight and the stopping power on the greens. I kept my TaylorMade “big foot” 60 degree which works in well with a five degree gap between PW to lob wedge. I’m actually finding I can hit greens more often and from further out. Can definitely see my handicap dropping to high teens next year. They just give me so much confidence. Glad to hear your enjoying yours and I think it just goes to show that they just might be the ants pants for many different handicap players 👍🏻🇦🇺
@@ski3504 The set begins at 5 iron and down to a 55 degree sand wedge. I supplemented the set wth a 20 degree 4 hybrid (fly hi) to replace the 4 iron ( also fitted). All clubs are consistent by retaining the same shaft from 4 hybrid to SW. Hope this helps. By the way, my new H/cap is 18.7 thanks to a few lessons and actually having the right clubs in my hands for the first time in my life. Hope this helps 👍🏻🇦🇺
The pro is offered so that people can combo. I’m a 9 hcp and I could see myself using a 4-5 hl, 6-7 hot metal, and 8-gw hot metal pro. That would be a great combo set imo
I did a combo and love it. I bought two sets of JPX 923 in 4 thru PW: Hot Metal and Hot Medal Pro. I ended up using a hybrid instead of a 4 iron but using Hot Metal for 5, 6, & 7 and Hot Medal Pro for 8, 9, & PW. The offset in the Hot Medal was a bit too much for me in the higher lofted clubs, but I really like the confidence in the lower lofted. I could be wrong, but I think there is only one version for the gap wedge just called JPX 923. I have it and really like it too. For the record I love the Mizuno S23 Wedges and use them for sand and loft wedge.
to answer your question. players cavity performs different than a hollow back players distance iron. ive personally had i525 and pro 223, neither perform like the zx5 or hmp or wilson d9 forged...zx5 and hmp and d9 forged are more forgiving yet offer the same offset profile and longer heal to toe....there is definitley a market for that exact profile. hollow back irons i525 and pro 223 arent very good on thin mishits smaller profile heal to toe. the one exception may be the tm p770 and 790 because of the power slots....
I think the JPX Line up is absolutely awesome, it’s nice to have variety and some people don’t like the look of the 221, 223 or 225 and would like a JPX Line but in a more compact form to suit a players eye but still retain the performance That’s a JPX Line offers. I play the 921 HoTMetaL and I’m going to play them until the heads fall off they are absolutely incredible. Mizuno rocks
Had a fitting today, ended up with the JPX923 HMP. Loved the size off set and just performed best for me. Obviously I think there is a place for them in the line up. Options are good 👍
Great vid Matt. As others said your question has a two side answer: -the pros are there to enable doing combo, it’s nicer to have thinner top lines and soles as you get to the 8i +. -also, you’re a pro wirh a fabulous swing speed. Normal and older people will likely see LONGER carry with the HL than the others due the novel mix of tech and traditional/weaker lofts. 🎉
I got fitted for a new set of Mizunos earlier this month and it was a toss up for the 225s and Hot Metal Pros. Only reason I went with the HMPs was price. Saved $350 but yes I agree, tooo many options and it gets confusing.
I was hitting someone’s Cleveland High Launch 3 iron on the Foresight simulator. I was absolutely shocked how high it was going and that I was getting 6-7000 backspin on a 3 iron. They are made for lower swing players that have a hard time getting the ball off the ground like my 82 year old golf buddy that goes with me sometimes.
I had the 921 hmp and just got the 923 hmp. I loved the 921 tons of forgiveness and felt amazing. The 923 does all that but looks way better. Me personally I don’t strike the ball well enough to jump into a 221,223 pro model. I need the added distance from the hot metal. So the hot metal pro is the perfect combo of forgiveness distance while still looking amazing. That’s why I chose them.
Did you notice a difference in feel with the 923? Currently on the fence between that and the 921. I hit the 921 before and loved how they felt, but haven’t tried the 923 yet
Here's my story: I played JPX 825 irons for 9 years and loved them. Last year I thought that I would get a new set of clubs, given the age of the 825 and technology advancements. So I sold them and got fitted into another major brand iron after trying them all. They were nice in the fitting bay but I could not play them on the course. I began to wish I had kept my 825s. Now, a year later, after trying to make them work, I gave up and went back to get fitted again. I told the fitter about my old 825s and asked if Mizuno still made a model that was similar to the old 825. He brought out the 923 models and the rest is history, as they say. I now own a set of 923 Hot Metal. Perfect! They remind me so much of my old JPX 825, only they perform better. Mizuno did it again for me!
Totally Agree pal. I've the 919 HM and Love them. Great sound and feel, but toooo many models now. It's like they're trying too hard....Their market share will come. I foresee Miz being up there with the Pro choice in the next year or two.
Matt, good vid. Thanx for all the great content. With regards to your question, I think it’s important to note that, at least here in Norway, the 923 pro is close to half the price of the 225 pro. That could be why they added the 923 Pro. It’s a less expensive, but still compact club.
There is sole differentiation between jpx & pro lines. The cavity back will be more forgiving than the most design. Mizuno knows what they are doing when it comes to design and marketing. A set of MP18 MMX is still on my wishlist.
the JPX tour is absolutely amazing. Very similar looks to a blade (very slightly thicker top line, same blade length, same lofts) but it feels much better and is much more forgiving. I have a 4-PW set in my bag now and already playing significantly better.
Think you have a very valid point Matt. I went for my fitting at Birkdale performance centre on Sunday , I was pretty open minded but really liked the look of the 225 s . After the shaft optimiser he never put one in my hand . Instead I tried JPX 223 hot metal , Calloway’s , Taylormade stealth, Cobra. I ended up with the Mizuno jox223. I tried them in the studio and on grass on the range . 1 more week till they arrive . Ps , I added the Gap wedge to my set .
I’m not a good golfer by any stretch but I’d like a cranked JPX HL 4 iron maybe like 24o a couple of forged then to the tour the good thing about so many models is you can combo sets easily say to within a degree and not have to get them bent or special order so get them before Christmas 2023
I would agree with you, too many models. I will check these out. For me, the choice will likely be between the standard JPX-923 and the JPX-923HL. I hit a previous model JPX in the past and loved the feel of the club.
Great, honest review. Love your insight. I’ve been playing JPX850 forged for 6 years and I love them. Was considering the 223 Pro, but I just can’t pull the trigger on the $$. Keep up the great content Matt.
Picked up my 923 Hot Metals yesterday and had to go to one of the bays to hit balls. As a high handicap, there are no other irons I can hit that perform well while sounding and feeling a step above
Brooks Koepka played and won with previous jpx tour models as a non Mizuno staff member. And according to a couple of sites JPX Tour is the most popular choice for irons played by Tour professionals who are not contracted to play a specific brand of golf clubs. And there might also be a generation who grew up with a jpx model and got better and better in golf and want to stay ‘loyal’ to the jpx And the other way around, those who played mp-blades and looking for a bit more forgiveness aren’t feeling to switch to jpx models. But I would think the people of Mizuno have figured out all their data to cover the whole spectrum of their golfers preferences.
I am a low end mid handicap that has been playing MP223s for the last year. I am going for a fitting for the JPX923HMP this week(if I can order a few degrees weaker than standard). I love the look and feel of my current set, but the miss hits are punishing.
Matt, I played MP20 MMCs for a season but needed to switch to graphite to help with a bad case of tennis elbow. Switched to the JPX921 HMP and haven't looked back. Sure, they don't feel the same but distance and forgiveness are A++ , I play off 5.3 and honestly, a straight ball flight suits me 90% of the time. Negatives, knockdown shots are almost impossible and they are too hot sometimes. The 19deg 4-iron with Recoil shaft is an absolute weapon
Ive never been a fan of the JPX line. I have had 2 MP models in 25 years. I just replaced my old Mp 30s with the 225s and couldnt be happier..... Great content as always Matt!
Definitely a lot of choice 🎉 maybe too many as you say I just wish all the lofts were weaker!😅it would be nice to try the Pro with the HL lofts.🎉. Someone else has pointed out that their’s quite a price difference with the MP series. So a good selling point for JPX series. 😊
$$$ is the reason for the Pro! I love the 225 but I can’t swing the 1,200$. I just received my 923 hmp and they are awesome. So forgiving and I get the distance I have been looking for. I have used Blades and do not like a huge head, the Pro fit what I wanted perfectly.
Price is definitely a factor. I just got fitted for the jpx 223 hm pro, originally was looking at the 225. Ended up being 400 dollars difference between sets, and the jpx seemed to go a bit further. I do prefer the look of the 225, but still thought the jpx looked great. At address there's not much to it, similar top line and such. Sound and feel were still amazing as well.
I bought the 921 hm irons with a upright lie and my problem is i hit them way high which is great but i struggle trying to hit low shots. Ball just jumps off the clubf ace.
I think the HL is its own beast for slower swingers, different to the others What you want to consider is blending, it's not just about "one club sets". As you say, the pro is more workable. So you can go pro or HM, or build a set with pros in the scoring clubs and HMs for the long irons. I've got a 921 HM 4i back in the bag, and I use it as a driving iron off the tee or harder fairways - 210 summer average. I couldn't do that with my previous set. 221/223/225 - same game, but for blade lovers, and the workability is even higher. Much less likely to build across, though. But you can.
I love my 921 Pros, better looking than HM with the same results. Hoping in a year or 5 lol, I’ll be ready to step up to the MP line of Mizuno offerings.
It makes sense that you would question the number of irons offered. But one major aspect you missed is price point. The Hot Metals are one of the best values out there at $963 US. The 245 pro are a good bit more at $1400 and play smaller than HMP. The jpx tour and jpx forged are the ones that are most redundant comparing directly against the MP line
The REAL problem with Mizuno is not the number of models, but the number of models available to lefties! I got fitted (and got new clubs last year for my 70th b'day). I wound up with Taylormade Sim 2 Max because they were SLIGHTLY better for me than the JPX921 hot metal (old irons were Mizuno MP60s that I couldn't really properly hit anymore). Broke my heart that the 921 hot metal pros were NOT available for me to even try!
Matt, I can solve your dilemma on selection of 8 choices from Mizuno for irons. Play left-handed like me and you'll soon find out most manufacturers don't give you as many options. So that will cut in half your options. I prefer forged, so that cuts it down to one or two choices.
I’ve got 921 forged irons. They are fantastic. Mizuno absolutely nails it with the irons. Someone needs to tell Matt how to pronounce chromoly. Chrome and molybdenum. Chro-moly
Until I actually hit the 225 and the JPX HMP side by side, I would have agreed with you. BUT, the JPX Pro is easier to hit than the 225 for me, and I was way more consistent. I haven’t hit the Forged or the Tour yet (as they are not out yet), but your argument may apply to those…I’ll hit those soon when my fitter gets those as we’re thinking I’ll do a combo set of JPX Forged/Pro irons…
Got fitted for a set of these a few days ago coming from p790. These are effortless & the most beautiful iron to hit. I'd never hit a mizuno iron before but am sold that they are the best 👌🏻
Having too many many choices there seems to be a pretty valid point. Could be a bit of inventory left over for the next release, then what? Another 7 choices?
I've got some hot metal but only 7 down, which are half an inch shorter and I love them. would be interested in the advantages and price of the new version
Matt, I have the JP:X 919 HMP and chose them over the others because they retained the forgiveness of the HMs while giving me less offset (which stopped me from the tendency of pulling a little left). I like the smaller profile. However, with the coming out of the 225's I'd love to see a head-to-head comparison of forgiveness, distance, sound, workability with this new HMP. Is that something you might be doing in the future?
My Brother just got fitted for these he is currently 9 Handicap. They look very nice. Not Blades but don't look like Game Improvement Irons with thickness
Got the 923 hot metal an am happy with them I work at a two 18 hole courses an Mizuno is number one in sales 4 other people that work there bought them after I did they notice my game improvement
It's not. It's comparing a 7 iron in one set to a 7 iron from another set. One can be designed for distance, one for feel, one for launch. The spin and max height and etc will differ in addition to obvious distance
I hit all of the available models. As a mid-handicapper, the 221, 223, and even the 225 were not for me. I have no problems getting the ball in the air so the HL was out. In the sim I found the HM to be too spinny, and I loved the HMP. I had a set built and I've gamed it 3 times and I know I made the right choice. Maybe that helps answer your question.
Of course the HL is going to go higher, your comparing the pro and HM to the HL with the loft equivalent to a club up.. you should of tested 8 iron Pro and HM to a 7 iron HL
@@giomusah2155 For me the 225s had much better feel and forgiveness. TBH I was surprised I didn't really care for the 923s after all the reviews that were loving them. I remember hitting the 921s and not really liking those either at least compared to my MP20 HMBs. My recommendation is of course to hit them and see what you think.
at what point does UW trust their recruiting evals and go with a recruited QB? If a QB enters the portal after all the wonderful things you just read about the kid, do you really think he's going to stay for multiple years (he was Cals leader, but see ya)? If UW is not going to play any QB recruit stop wasting time going after higher level HS QB and the $ associated with that position. Really wild that every season UW looks outside the system. It just seems like the QB that have come in are not the solution (injuries or not).
@@BuffaloBarber24 225. I got tested and it was similar dispersion/distance. HMP is a few yards further, but 225 looks better...the 225 is really forgiving in that small package...as long as you don't use a 225 for a 3,4 iron....I shoot low 80s, 5 iron 500...I have a 6 iron to SW.
Matt, your videos and content are fantastic, but you either need a new editor or you need to self-edit yourself during shooting. You spend way too much time rambling and repeating yourself - it's 2 minutes of rambling the same couple of points before every single swing. Being concise is key!! Much love, keep up the good work.
Why do you hate us? (j/k) You are missing what the industry has also been missing for quite awhile now...that there are decently skilled golfers with slower swing speeds that can benefit greatly from GI technology, but either struggle with the severe offsets, oversized club faces, and wide soles that come with it, or don't want to give up workability. We've been BEGGING for a club like the HMP for many years and now you question whether it is needed? What is next, we should only be allowed to play with hybrids? The 923 HMP continues the refinement of an iron that is PERFECT iron for golfers like me.
I'll add that the offsets of the 923 HMP are nearly identical (w/in .001") to the 2010 MX 300's I used when I played my best golf (5 hcp). The GI tech allows essentially the same 7 iron to be 4.5 degrees stronger with even more forgiveness. The additional 1.5 mm of offset in the HM (and 2.5 mm in the HL) is a big negative for me.
I loath how manufacturers trick consumers to think they have invented special clubs. The difference in launches is nothing more than the loft of the iron. For two decades club makers have decreased the loft to make golfers think it’s science behind how they gained distance when in fact they made a 34 degrees 7 iron, 32, 31, 28.5 degrees.

Ball just jumps off the clubf
ace.
I think the HL is its own beast for slower swingers, different to the others
What you want to consider is blending, it's not just about "one club sets".
New camera? Footage very crisp. Would love to try some Mizuno clubs, but it’s hard to stray from my pings.
The 225's are not offered in left hand and the 923HM PRO is offered in left hand. The 923's are more powerful and forgiving than the 225's also.
I love my 921 Pros, better looking than HM with the same results. Hoping in a year or 5 lol, I’ll be ready to step up to the MP line of Mizuno offerings.
Looks like the hot metal performed better for you than the hot metal pro
Well said Matt, I thought the same thing when i saw their lineup. You are the only person that I have heard so far questioning it
It makes sense that you would question the number of irons offered. But one major aspect you missed is price point. The Hot Metals are one of the best values out there at $963 US. The 245 pro are a good bit more at $1400 and play smaller than HMP. The jpx tour and jpx forged are the ones that are most redundant comparing directly against the MP line
How do they compare to the jpx 921’s? Only difference I see is the nickel finish and the addition of the high launch model.
My thoughts exactly as a 921hm owner.
Makes 3 of us
I used to game the ping G2 HL irons when I first started golfing. These are back to the future maybe ?? 👍good vid
Can’t decide between the HM pros or the regular HMs
I’m 71 years of age. I have a fairly high handicap. I been using The Cleveland Launcher Halos. Would love to try a set of these.
Matt, I can solve your dilemma on selection of 8 choices from Mizuno for irons. Play left-handed like me and you'll soon find out most manufacturers don't give you as many options. So that will cut in half your options. I prefer forged, so that cuts it down to one or two choices.
I have the jpx919 forged. Any major differences in the 923?
I’ve got 921 forged irons. They are fantastic. Mizuno absolutely nails it with the irons. Someone needs to tell Matt how to pronounce chromoly. Chrome and molybdenum. Chro-moly
Just stopped by to say - just bought my 923 Hot Metal Pros. Bought them because they were cheap at DSG (USA).
yeah i did my fitting and they suggested HMP, i needed that little extra help, forgiveness and distance due to my strike pattern
Exactly the same here. They feel so smooth and the ball just explodes off the club face.
The mini-mizuno den caddy set up is brilliant
Cool isn't it!
@@Mattfryergolf very cool really liking the set up. Cheers Matt
Plus the 923 forged which is out next year and surely must be a better bet for under 10 handicap than the hot metal pro 🤷🏼♂️
I have the 225 and the 923 hm pro. The 923 is 10 yards longer and I’m not a great striker and the help is much greater than the 225.
Trying to decide between these two sets. Do you find the 923 more forgiving?
Love the video! Which iron# were you hitting for these comparisons?
Having too many many choices there seems to be a pretty valid point. Could be a bit of inventory left over for the next release, then what? Another 7 choices?
Matt, why not compare to the JPX921 range?
I could do that, need to get hold of some
I've got some hot metal but only 7 down, which are half an inch shorter and I love them. would be interested in the advantages and price of the new version
Must do this, please.
@@ianc5549 Thanks for the info!
I think the difference between a hot metal pro in the 225 is £50 a stick. Maybe that’s why.
I’m deciding between the Hot Metal and the Srixon ZX5 right now.
Toss Up. Both are long and forgiving. I just watched someone else video with that exact comparison
I like the fact they have 5 choices from the JPX line up
My Brother just got fitted for these he is currently 9 Handicap. They look very nice. Not Blades but don't look like Game Improvement Irons with thickness
Got the 923 hot metal an am happy with them I work at a two 18 hole courses an Mizuno is number one in sales 4 other people that work there bought them after I did they notice my game improvement
Thanks Mr Fryer for always bringing us the Mizuno love. It’s all I play. Keep doing you.
Nice report Matt. Close to holing out!
Hot metal pro better for toe strikers and price difference between these and the MP is significant.
I don’t see the point in comparing irons with different lofts it’s like comparing a 7 iron to a 5 iron
I just got a set, I love them!!!
Of course the HL is going to go higher, your comparing the pro and HM to the HL with the loft equivalent to a club up.. you should of tested 8 iron Pro and HM to a 7 iron HL
I purchased the 921s this year just as good 👍
The pro keeps the forgiveness of the HM but the look of a pro club but with less fear. Anyone can hit them with worrying.
I have hit all the 923s, didn't really like them, I prefer the 223 and 225 pros, just a better feel to me.
any difference in forgiveness and distance between 225 and 923s?
@@giomusah2155 For me the 225s had much better feel and forgiveness. TBH I was surprised I didn't really care for the 923s after all the reviews that were loving them. I remember hitting the 921s and not really liking those either at least compared to my MP20 HMBs. My recommendation is of course to hit them and see what you think.
@@hoppman6649 how are they more forgiving when the 923s are much chunkier?
I'd love to see club pros like this switching to mid-high handicap sets of clubs.
You really never talked about the swing speed affect
at what point does UW trust their recruiting evals and go with a recruited QB? If a QB enters the portal after all the wonderful things you just read about the kid, do you really think he's going to stay for multiple years (he was Cals leader, but see ya)? If UW is not going to play any QB recruit stop wasting time going after higher level HS QB and the $ associated with that position. Really wild that every season UW looks outside the system. It just seems like the QB that have come in are not the solution (injuries or not).
Lots of options. We'll done Muzuno!!!
Jpx 932 Pro are alot cheaper than the mizuno pro range, this could be a big factor matt,
Yes that could be it.
@@Mattfryergolf how much more forgiving and distance are jpx923 vs 225? I have the 225 but wondering .....
@@giomusah2155 what did you decide on. The 225 or HMP?
First in comments say something good.....err I love golf! ....
That's what we like!
I got the jpg 923 tour… like using a butter knife. Spreads the butter….
"Chrome-Lee"....🤣. Its pronounced Chrome-Olly Matt 👍
Well done matt they look strong lofted 😀
Yes the hl don't look as strong
The lofts are the problem.
Have you ever tried the pxgs
Yes but not in a while.
We could use a review of the PXG line from you Matt. Especially the 0211s.
Beautiful, but its getting wven worse than iphones...for an awerage golfer it wont make ANY difference, maybe 3yards in the whole season...
Yep a lot of tech out there now
@@Mattfryergolf at least you get fitted and got thing is youtubers are doing reviews 👍
Simple answer. The HM Pro is cheaper than the 223, 225.
Get rid of the JPX Tour??? I thought you knew what you were talking about!
Answer, it’s 400-500$ cheaper.
Look exactly the same as my 919 hmp
Dropping the jpx tour makes no sense to me lol
Are they anywhere near as good as the cobra forge tec
I haven't tried them so cant answer that one.
YES THEY DONT LIKE CROWS IS WON PROBLEM
You cannot get a 225 as a left handed player.
It's all marketing
I loath how manufacturers trick consumers to think they have invented special clubs. The difference in launches is nothing more than the loft of the iron. For two decades club makers have decreased the loft to make golfers think it’s science behind how they gained distance when in fact they made a 34 degrees 7 iron, 32, 31, 28.5 degrees.
The difference is the with low and rearward placement of weight, the stronger lofted irons achieve the same peak height.
You forgot CoG.
If you JUST de-lofted a club, you can’t be getting those peak heights…
So yeah, it is, in fact - science and math. Funny that. 🙌
That’s incorrect. For these particular clubs it’s the weight distribution across the face that results in the high launch.
@@jatimmonsjr Horseshyte. Ping G430 PW is 41.5°. Pros play a 48°
