Also a slower senior golfer. I hit my 7 wood great but struggle with my 5 wood. So I took the shaft from my 5 wood and put it in my 7 wood giving me essentially a 6 wood for more distance (?!) Thanks Ping.
Even before this video, I added a new 7 wood to my bag. Replacing a hybrid and/or long irons. Works great. Ball flight is higher and softer landing than hybrids or irons. More forgiving of off-center hits. Try it.
Everything you said is correct. I carry both 4 iron and 7w, similar distances and use both depending on the shot. 7 wood is great for long approaches as it gives confidence to carry front bunkers and stop quickly. Also my go to club for a big draw, particularly if the ball is above my feet. Confidence builder. 👍
I enjoy about the 7W ( 190-210yds Winter /210-230yds Summer ) its great on hilly sloping shots with the ball above or below your feet. Great on down hill shots leaving me with 3W for up hill shots. I often play in competitions with just the 7W as my only FW in the bag. 7W Too have almost a separate set of rules too on the shafts. With many opting too tip down driver shafts to alter the kick point so getting a 4/5 W flight that's easy to launch 42.5"
I’ve gamed 1,3,5 & 7 for about 20 years and have just replaced my 13 year old Yonex ones with Mizuno ST Z for 1, 3, 5 & ST Max for 7 wood. Just need to sort new irons now to replace my 11 year old Mizunos to give me a whole new bag to serve me for the next few years
Part of the reason so many more people use 7 woods now is that they are equivalent to 5 woods 30 years ago. My first 7 wood, circa 1990 was around 25 degrees of loft, or about 4-5 degrees higher than my 5 wood, which was around 20-21 degrees. Shrinking loft disease has changed the numbers on the bottom of woods as well as irons. One of these days I want to get my hands on a 9 wood head I can build a club to my preferred specs out of, and do a face off against my 4 hybrid. At my swing speed, I figure the 9 wood might work better for me by hitting a bit higher.
love the expresion Shrinking loft disease. I am off to morocco golfing at weekend. I was thinking of taking my 5 wood as well as my 7 wood. I shall not bother now
@@doughill1945 It's like a conveyor belt, dropping clubs with low numbers off one end, and adding new wedges on the other to fit in between the pitching wedge and sand wedge. Modern 44 degree pitching wedges are the loft of 1960's 8 irons. That's why gap wedges developed, to replace the old 52 degree pitching wedges. We need 2 of them now. I can just see it now. Iron sets in 2035. Driving Wedge, Long Wedge, Trouble Wedge, Fairway Wedge, High Fairway Wedge, Chipping Wedge, Pitching Wedge, Approach Wedge, Gap Wedge, Sand Wedge, Lob Wedge. 😵💫😮😵💫😮😵💫
@@doughill1945 The one sign of hope I see is the more modern tendancy for listing loft on the bottom of wedges. If we start doing that with irons and hybrids and woods as well, the monkey business may finally stop!
@@seanbaines I am 73 and have a number of old clubs I do not use. I have some money in the pro shop account but have got to the stage very little appeals. I am happy with what I have got.
@@doughill1945 Me too. I might tinker with the 9 wood vs 4 hybrid thing. That's about it. For context, my woods these days are 4 wood at 16.5 degrees, and 7 wood at 21 degrees. Don't carry a 3, and there would be too little gap between my 5 and either of the others. My 4 and 7 are in the 10 to 15 yards apart range, depending on quality of strike, which is about right, I reckon.
Whilst I play a 7w, probably due to a failure of my technique, I do find it a bit one dimensional. It carries 200-205 yards for me, nice and high but I cannot get the trajectory down for that slightly low flight but more run out.
21 handicap but fairly quick swing speed. Got a few options now Inc 7 wood. Had a great time with it for a while but recently struggling with it and interestingly hitting long iron better. Now got a ping icrossover 3 iron and seems to be easy to hit so far. 7 wood can be great out of rough too.
I played around with different options at that end of my bag and settled on a 2 iron and a 7 wood. Both have similarities but also completely different.
I use a 21 degree 3 hybrid, and it kind of does the same thing, i don't bother with a 3/5 wood because I have a way better chance of hitting the hybrid decently.. would there be any advantage to looking at a 7 wood over the 3 hybrid?
I've been wanting a 7 wood for about 2 years. I have reasonable club speed, (115 with driver) and I'd like to test a 7 wood before I buy one, unfortunately I've yet to find one in a retail store with anything other than a Regular flex or softer shaft. The closest fitting center to me is more than 3 hours drive away and having to pay for a full session with them to effectively just test a club is a tricky one to justify. I think if manufacturers would offer 7 woods in stores at least in S flex they would sell them by the bucket load as as you say, they aren't just for slow speed players to get the ball high any more
I have the Callaway Ai smoke 7 wood, it’s amazing! Goes 215-220 carry and hard to hit off line. I love it so much I have the 9 wood on order, I don’t get on well with hybrids. Should carry around 200 and land like a butterfly with sore feet 😂🥰
Like my 7 wood a ton but I’ve heard the same benefits ascribed to the 5 wood relative to its use off the tee, the fairway and as a chipper. Of the two, 5 or 7, does one have more to say for itself than the other? Btw, love the channel! N
I have a 4h rather than a 7w right now, but definitely advocate for people trying different things in those slots. (And went 5w over 3h for the extra height, especially when the course is trying to take it away from you)
yeah the 7w is great and all but not that good out of the rough or uneven lies, I find the 4h more versatile or maybe I just suck and need to hit more fairways haha
Still think a 4 hybrid is more versatile. Hard to keep a 7 wood low, but with some practice it can be done with 4H. So if you have the money to have a driving iron, a 4 hybrid and a 7 wood, and pick the right club for the conditions you’re playing in…. Go for it. But for most people who just have 14 clubs in their bag I’d choose 4 hybrid all day.

@@seanbaines most 3 hybrids are 19-20 degrees. But 24 deg is definitely a 5 hybrid in all the brands I’ve seen. So 2 hybrid: 16-18 deg 3 hybrid: 19-21 deg 4 hybrid: 21-23 deg 5-hybrid: 24-25 deg 6-hybrid: 26-28 degrees
