    Cool! Here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand we call ourselves by our tribes, & collectively as Māori. “Māori” actually means ‘normal’

      Lol - that's awesome.
      I love when you dig into the meaning of endonyms and it turns out it just means "people" or "regular" and then they have more descriptive names for other groups. Like how (iirc) "Cherokee" in Cherokee means "the principal people" but the Iroquois name for them means "people who live where there are many caves".

      Both the word Germans use for themselves (Deutsch) and the English word for the Dutch, come from a old Germanic word that also meant people, so I wouldn't be surprised if many more ethnicities/nationalities have etymologies like that.

    • @vanillablossom
      @vanillablossom 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@KarlSnarks I came here to say the same, you were faster! I am pretty sure I knew some other examples where natives called themself people in their native language, but besides the most known examples you named I cannot list anything on the spot. I think some googling may even reveal than most groups / tribes / ethnicities call themselves just people, someone should've already done some research on that.

    I once read that some indigenous tribes in North America have always had representations of gender outside the binary. I wonder if it's the same for the Inuit of Greenland? I think it's so cool, and goes a long way in demonstrating that prejudice and close mindedness are learned.

      I've been asking our old people for decades of what you speak and possible words. But within most indigenous language, the word for him or her is usually the same word. Within my indigenous language the word for him and her are the same word, wiya. I think this in itself is a reflection of the indigenous value system of the Americas. How we define ourselves as human beings goes much deeper than being a he...or being a she.
