Alekhine was smarter than you think in this game. He meant it as an advertisement for his own defense. Since then Alekhine' defense became so popular that he was making huge money on it. It went so far, that even Sicilian mafia was losing money to Alekhine, so they hired the next grandmasters to popularize Sicilian defense.
Mato your the cream of the crop! I watch your videos for emotional support and entertainment just as much as chess education. I dont know what i would do without your videos.
Thank you for your brilliant analysis of various chess Games. I watch your chess videos daily and they have peaked my interest in the game. You are truly the best commentator and I have been able to improve my chess game by watching your videos. (someone else said it first, but it is true for me as well!)
that guy sure paniced agains alekhine but who could have blamed him , mato who do you think would be the moste intimidating chess player to play agains ? i personally i think it's capablanca but i don't know why
I bet Bettinger could not sleep for 48 hours after this dramatic loss. As is usually the case with lower rated players against professionals they sometimes do not see the wood for the trees - even if the Master blunders they just cannot believe it to be true, possibly suspecting some trap or elegant defence where there is none - and then go for the second- or third best move.
The psychological effect of playing against a legend can obscure your point of view and cause you to miss blatant victory. Its quite sad, i believe that bettinger truly deserved the win here.
There were a lot of boards and probably a lot of distractions. However, Bettinger failed to find his best move several times.Did he lack confidence?...probably. Did he have the game of his life?...indeed.
Well it is kinda easy to say from your perspective tho, you were not in that situation, playing against alekhine. Maybe he succumbed to the pressure and lost his cool.
he might not have the GM label on him but the way he plays during that time (1930s was this game?) hes good!, probly one of those Washington square hustlers..
+Sezay Ahmed mato may have continued climbing his rank only if he continued playing. one day he had an accident and lost interest (or perhaps ability) to play chees in tournaments. now he works as a chess teacher (and maybe other jobs too)
+maverick7376 ye i know but i simply expected sth like 2300...i overestimated him :) but hes still one of my favourite entertainters with ben finegold :D
That wasn't very impressive by either player, but my god, how could Bettinger miss Bxf2+? Alekhines "error" also seems amateurish, but perhaps it's on purpose? Like GMs starting a piece down at exebition games and winning easily anyway?
Bettinger is Osum really in this game...But he missed winning move. I Believe that He was Wining . Again Best Come Back From My Chess Hero - A. Alekhine..:) Thanks Mato....:) Osum Game....:) #TrueFan #MatoJelic #Alekhine
I find it hard to believe some bloke named Bettinger actually had a winning chance against Alekhine! Then again, ti saw a simul, and even the best grandmasters have been known to falter in simuls.

Thank you Mato for your uploads. My love for chess is greatly due in part to your great contributions to the community and your book "The King Hunt".

As always very helpful to me and very entertaining.more blessing to you...
So nice of you
Alekhine made a mistake here. I never thought I would hear those words. ☺
An especially incisive analysis. THANKS, MATO.
I cant believe Alekhine made a mistake...and in my opinion Bettinger lost coz he was afraid of winning against the legend
Prelepo! Hvala sjor Mato.😊
Yer a great teacher Mato, Shalom Maestro
Only his dog believed him........hahaha.... You are very funny Mato !
I liked this game too
You have found something that you do very well !!!
Mato, when you checkmate your opponent, do you say; "check-mato!"?
I say checkzennar
Haha very funny ...very funny ROFL...I'm dying of your jokes...haha...
+MatoJelic hahahahaha
+MatoJelic can you please say in the next video: "check........zennar........and that is all."
I dont understand the joke, I feel stupid
again made my day mato best guy ever
These funny facts in the endings should be turned in to a book.
I saw all the killer moves but no one believes me, no one except for my dog that is
that guy sure paniced agains alekhine but who could have blamed him , mato who do you think would be the moste intimidating chess player to play agains ? i personally i think it's capablanca but i don't know why
I believe the reason Bettinger lost is because he would have thought Alekhine had something up his sleeve when he made the mistake
That is some hilarious commentary at 9:30 onwards
Rd2 instead of Na4?
Well you really can make a boring game interesting! I like it. especially about the dog. hahaha.
mato what is username on chess.com, i want to play against you.

You're the best Mato, but...
Why not 13.... Bd6? If 14 c5 bg3 15 cb6 bf2+ 16 Kf2 Qb3. Isn't that better for black?
Not even his own cat!!! Ouch that's painful!
No bets on bettinger!
Not even his own cat!!!
MATO....what do you think about alekhine? could have won to carlsen???
if Bxf2 Kh1 if black take Queen white can take the Queen also?? how the game continue...
Nice.
lmao your jokes are so corny, but absolutely hilarious.
Even I could see the rook move. If only he played it, I would love to see what Alekhine would do about it.

How could you play that good against alekhine and miss all the easy winning moves of the game? he could have won at least twice!
Well it is kinda easy to say from your perspective tho, you were not in that situation, playing against alekhine. Maybe he succumbed to the pressure and lost his cool.
+The Drunk Knight These moves don't seem to be that hard to spot at GM level. Like you said it could have been the pressure or Alekhine's aura.
What do you mean "at GM level"? Surely Bettinger was no GM, what GM would play a 29-board simul as one of the 29?
he might not have the GM label on him but the way he plays during that time (1930s was this game?) hes good!, probly one of those Washington square hustlers..
Mato whats your elo?

He went from Bettinger to Worsinger
mato, this view your face in the end is new or you repeat one short video
It was repeated...
He had that snake , Alekhine, cornered , but let him escape.
That wasn't very impressive by either player, but my god, how could Bettinger miss Bxf2+? Alekhines "error" also seems amateurish, but perhaps it's on purpose? Like GMs starting a piece down at exebition games and winning easily anyway?
I got 2 out of 3.
My dog believed me too.

bettinger did big present for alekhine
I also love dogs, they tend to lick my face and we cuddle and sleep
This was more like a scandinavian defense with strange move order. Nice game anyways
surprised to see Alekhine make so many mistakes
Mato is the best! :)
Whenever he says that alekhine played on 29 boards or 45 boards i just feel so faking Dumb.
omg this should be an easy win for bettinger.
Nobody believed him. Not even his own cat. LOL!
Keep dreaming.. I will.
He shud ve won😑
dog believed him ha ha
only Mato jokes hahah
bad game for Alekhine
How can Bettinger play so well then fail to see such simple combinations .. that would have allowed him to win? Was the game fixed?
