    Dr. Wooton,
    I marched in the snare line in the Phantom Regiment Cadets in 1984, and I remember you teaching the ratamacue pattern to us in a sectional. You wrote it out on a chalkboard in one of the practice rooms at Corps Hall. It took us awhile, but all of us could play it at a slow tempo. Later on I learned the flam passage and the backstickings. To this day I use it in my warm up routines before performances. I also remember the original name that was given to the lick although I will not mention it. That might get us into trouble. Thanks for posting this. It brings back a lot of memories.

      @MaverickJ3W 6 лет назад +12

      Matt Eaton please tell us the original name I'm dying to know. I marched snare in high school. We had a short cadence called "stick it in" if it makes you feel any better that us drummers are full of innuendos. I believe it was adapted from a college drumline who played it called by the same name.

    I like how Dr. Wooton goes from general to specific. We start out with his intro/thesis statement providing a general overview of what to expect. Then we go into the body of the lesson breaking the lick down into specifics. And then a summary or conclusion of the lesson is provided by discussing what we learned and playing the lick in full.

    • @johnwooton
      @johnwooton 10 лет назад

      Erasmo Rodriguez I guess I could make a video but in the mean time I will tell you. First you have to have those cuts in the drum. That makes the difference. It opens up the drum, gives it more body, depth and snare sound. So more low and more high, just like you want to eq your stereo. Now crank the bottom head pretty tight and get the top head to feel good. Not too much tension but enough to give a crisp sound. What people don't realize is that if you crank that top head to high you choke the drum. However, the slits are the difference. That help?

    • @ryancarlisle7909
      @ryancarlisle7909 10 лет назад

      John Wooton Dr. Wooton, could you please clarify what you mean when you talk about the "cuts in the drum?" Are you talking about cutting the shell?

Your a master of our craft and thank you for ALL your work for these videos. I picked my sticks back up last year after 16 years of silence. typically in a DCI or WGI setting you don't want to have a loose left hand, but in this setting of a very choppy lick it seems to be fine. But you already know that, because you're me and it is now and not the past.

    I understand what this is supposed to be getting across to the reader, but anybody who notates their stems like that is absolutely a psychopath.

      Huh? That is pretty standard. Not saying I'm not a psychopath though.

    what time signature is this piece in?

    • @vodzdrums
      @vodzdrums 8 лет назад +1

      +dabeatmanFROMtheNO by the way it's notated, i think it's: the flams are all in 12/8, the single strokes are open and the ratamacues are, first in 17/16 and then 19/16. It's notated that way so you can easily memorize by the groupings of the rudiments. But if you do the math, you'll see that you can notate the last two bars in two bars of 4/4, but the rudiments will be over the bar. :)
