    Hello, thank you so, very much for making this video. This is exactly the kind of intersection that I find nerve wrecking. I really appreciate your monumental effort in trying to explain the situation without really being there. The “live” traffic analysis was a great way to demonstrate this. My biggest take away from this video is to know exactly where to look/what to watch out for instead of being overwhelmed by the sheer number of things going all around. The slow motion also gives a good insight on to when to start turning. You are a very good teacher. May God bless you and your family.

      @@TorontoDrivers Hello again. This video had great pointers on when to turn and what to look out for. I don’t know if this is just my Achilles heel but I think a second part to this video with tips/techniques on how to turn would be extremely valuable. For instance, in line with your turning left videos I ask myself if I should drive straight until the median/island, line my left shoulder with it and turn the wheel 1.5 turns left if I want to end up in the first lane? Should I line my shoulder with the left edge of the second lane and turn to end up in the second lane instead? Also, should I accelerate when the light goes green, brake near the turn and accelerate again while turning and so on. I don’t cut lanes generally but invariably do so while turning at wide intersections. I do understand this may just need practice so you are in the best position to judge whether another video is warranted. But in any case thank you very much for all you do.

    Thanks so much for this explanation. It is indeed a very strange system for me (I tend to think that it is even more dangerous than the one you mentioned have in Quebec with only left turn on advance green arrow). Anyways, it is what it is and we have to learn it. By the way I also still going to intersections to stand by and try to figure out how to do it reducing risks for everybody.
    It may looked like a fluid way to control traffic but from the pedestrian point of view is dangerous. Almost everyday I am charged by some vehicle or see a pedestrian being charged by one. This system subtly relagates pedestrians to second class citizens.

    Thanks for this video; it is very useful. Would you please consider posting a video explaining the proper lane spacing between turning vehicles and pedestrians? I am unclear on this issue. Again, thanks very much.

    • @leannethabet5525
      @leannethabet5525 2 года назад +2

      You will get a feel for spacing when you look directly towards the lane you're turning on. If we were to say you're doing a left turn on a double turning lane... Meaning 2 lanes that are turning left instead of one. And you're on the left lane of the double turning lanes you would need to drive straight first before immediately turning to make space for the lane next to you, that will also give proper space for you and the drivers next to you to not bump into each other. It is always best to overcompensate space for the lane next to you rather undercompensate because you can always correct it once you have view of where those lanes are. Now for the right lane of double turning lanes you should always keep those turns tighter aim for the closest lane you're turning on. That way you stay away from turning into the lane next to you.

    We were taught in driving school to NEVER approach an intersection unless we can safely clear that left turn. You HAVE to remain behind the white line until it is clear to make the turn. If you are unable to make the turn, you are then stuck in the middle of an intersection when the lights switch, which is extremely dangerous. So, you incorrectly corrected the person waiting behind the line to make their turn. Just because everybody does it doesn't mean its legal, or the smart thing to do.

For example, if one vehicle is ahead of me when I am behind the white line, can I cross the white line if I think that there is enough space? Will that lead to disqualification on the test?

    Hi, thank you for this video. I've watched it and I'm still nervous about left turns at major intersections. I wish they'd make it so that drivers can only turn left at an advanced green light. But anyway. My question is: are drivers required to inch forward into the intersection at a green light when waiting to turn left or are they allowed to stay behind the line until they see a safe gap? I get nervous moving forward if it's a busy intersection and the light may turn yellow and red while I'm still waiting & I end up having to turn left at a red light to clear the intersection

      If you're the one waiting to turn left and not the person behind the vehicle already waiting to make a left, then yes you are required to move up a bit for one main reason. That reason is because you need to see incoming traffic and be prepared to make a left. However, if you're the person behind the vehicle making a left, you should always be behind the pedestrian cross-walk and not directly behind the other vehicle. In the event you're one of those reckless and impatient drivers who won't wait behind the cross-walk, you got to clear the intersection and pray you don't get a ticket.

      (anyone out there, please correct me if i am wrong)
      If you are in the middle waiting for left turn while your signal is green, and now it has become yellow, its actually a good thing. If its safe you can take left or else soon its going to be safe (after yellow, its going to be red) so while it was yellow, if you didn't make, make it as soon as it becomes red. I guess signal red when you are in the center is safest option to turn left.

    This is why pedestrians are getting hit by cars that are making left turns. Drivers are often only paying attention to incoming cars to plan a left turn, they aren't really making pedestrians their priority when it comes to left turns. I've seen it happen many times, and a few times I nearly got hit by cars. Drivers making a left turn should get priority for several seconds, then get a red light for drivers who need to cross the intersection going straight, AND this is the perfect chance for pedestrians to cross. Otherwise with too many things for drivers making left turns to pay attention to, what do you really expect?

      I agree. I think advanced green lights for left turns should be the only way you should turn left at a major intersection. otherwise it can get too convoluted during busy times

      @@mke_gal I’m a driver for a dealership. I often drive around running errands. I think toronto has the most dumbest traffic system in Ontario. It’s worst during rush hour because you don’t get a advanced green light for left turns and so you pretty much have to wait for the light to turn red so you can go, other than that, cars just keep coming through.
