  • Do ANAMORPHIC LENSES Work On The Canon C70?? (Atlas Orion Anamorphic Lenses)
    So I tested out the Atlas Orion Anamorphic Lenses on the Canon C70 and got some interesting results. I used the Fotodiox RF to PL Adapter to mount the anamorphic lenses on the C70 which worked really great. However, I found the C70 lacked resolution using a 2x anamorphic lens on it and it made it hard to focus while wide open at T2.1
    However, the look of the Atlas Orion Anamorphics lenses on the Canon C70 was absolutely beautiful! It just took away that digital look and made it look almost like film which was awesome!

    Great sharpness in the middle of them for sure which is good for the price. Not a fan of typical anamorphic for most cases though, I feel like unless I am shooting in space, a neon city or an arcade or something else that has natural neon blue lighting then the blue streaks dont really fit the environment. There are some scopes out there with neutral or no streak flares which I would love to try one day, that way you can add your own colour filament at the back of the lens to match the practical lighting.

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад

      Yeah i agree. The blue flare is very "stylistic" which doesnt' suit majority of commercials that want a nice clean look. But for those clients that specifically want that, they are perfect!

    Love this combo, we did 6 C70 all with these lenses for a live Music Album recording at the start if the year! We only shot f4 and final export was 2K. Client only wanted 1080HD so 2K was still a step up. Also the 35mm is stupid WIDE hahaha

      Heck yes so sick! Yeah the 32mm is wild! Love the distortion of it but

    Nice, I think I understood what you meant with the EF adapter, but wasn’t sure. Did you try two adapters? PL to EF onto a EF to RF?

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад

      No because the PL to EF Didn't work with any lenses unfortunately.

    Hey man! I was curious if you could tell me what Focus pull you are using on this rig at the timestamp 2:30? Are you pulling focus yourself there with some kind of wheel on the tophandle/bar somewhere? Or do you have a focus puller out of frame? Im really trying to find a good solution for pulling focus that isnt like the tilta sidehandle. Redrock sells this tiny finger wheel attachment that can attach to bars and stuff, which would be great, except its expensive as hell, lol. Just curious if you have a solution like that here. I like to carry with the tophandle and have my hand underneath the bottom for support.

      So for most of it we used the Nucelus nano sent to a monitor for my 1st AC. But some I just pulled off the barrel of the lens itself. The tilta side handle is the best option I've found because it allows you to keep the camera stable at the same time. Otherwise with a wheel you can't grip the camera and focus at the same time.

    Hey Andrew, thanks for the video! I shoot with the A set Orions and my C200, and I just don't think these lenses work that well with a 16:9 S35 sensor. I've gotten decent results, but as you say cropping in the final image to get a 1:2.39 aspect ratio loses resolution and the image starts to fall apart much faster. Having said that, I bought the optional EF mount for my Orions to make them easier to use with my C200 (and my other EF cameras), and that raises a really interesting possibility -- using the EF Orions with the C70 and the RF-to-EF speedbooster. It's still 16x9 so you'd have to crop the sides in post, but by reducing the lens image circle (and thereby reducing the crop factor from 1.5x to 1.2x-ish), more of the Orion image will fit on the C70 sensor. I'm going to have to rent the C70 + speedbooster and try this out...

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад +1

      Oh man! I didn't even think about trying these with a speed booster! I wonder if it would work or not... Sounds like a future video to test out for sure!

    • @dkseattle

      @@AndrewMurphyFilms the biggest obstacle is probably clearance. With the EF mount on the Orion lenses, the rear element sticks out a bit from the EF locking ring. Not sure if that element will have clearance from the front element of the speedbooster. Only one way to find out... =)

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад

      Exactly what I wondering, I still can’t figure out what anamorphic lens I should buy for my C70, I also have a speed buster for my EF lenses.

  • @ianfrank2209

    Does the C70 have an internal 4x3 aspect ratio that maintains all the height of the sensor? That would solve the problem of "having to use a 1.33x" because most cinema camera ie: Red shoot on the 4x3 crop in-camera. This way you avoid cropping in post.

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад

      The C70 has. Super35mm Sensor which is 16:9 aspect ratio sensor. You'd need a 4:3 sensor like a 35mm full frame sensor to shoot open gate.

    I'd definitely pick the Silver Edition ones over these original versions purely for the less saturated flaring. Their flaring is OTT for me in most scenarios, excl shooting car or sports hype reels. Definitely a lot of CA. Do like the bokeh though. Thanks for the video.

      @@AndrewMurphyFilms they'd be super hard to get here yet. I considered putting in an order at the end of last financial year for the Silver Ed set mostly to hire out - bought a car instead haha. Would love a full frame C90 if that's even a going to be a thing. But wish that both C90 (if ever going to be a thing) plus the C70 had the rotatable grip of the C300mkiii - that would make life SOOOO much better ergo-wise with that cam right! ;-)

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад

      Yeah rotatable grip would be amazing! I makes it so awakrd to shoot from the hip with it. Thats why i rarely use it without a cage and handles on it.

  • @BrandonTalbot
    @BrandonTalbot 2 года назад +1

    Anamorphic are hard to focus, their magnification makes them tricky and makes peaking not as accurate. You really gotta use the magnification button on the C70 to nail focus. And like you mentioned shooting at even 2.8 can be tricky.

    • @AndrewMurphyFilms
      @AndrewMurphyFilms  2 года назад +1

      Yeah for sure! We found that T4 was the lowest aperture that seemed to allow peaking to actually work.

    They are as sharp as a wet napkin at T2. I wouldn’t recommend shooting wide open because the sharpness is way to low. However, T2.8, they are as sharp as any spherical lens. If I had 30k, I’d buy them right now
