Wow, here’s a blast from the past.
Good old Joe’s n Moe’s.
I always recommend to friends when buying a car, stay away from a sunroof car for this very reason.
My daughter worked for Ford as an advisor about 8 years ago and she absolutely refuses to buy a car with a sunroof in it. She saw too many leaks.
Have 2003 Ford Explorer with sunroof that leaked. Blew into the drains and used .095 twisted string/wacker line. It did not come out where I could see it. Opened the headliner and found tube was detached at the driver head area. Also the sunroof glass seal was shot. Too expensive to get replacement seal so got entire glass from junkyard. I was amazed how easy it was to remove the glass and to open the headliner area. Previous owner had no clue what caused the leak so he totally sealed the entire sunroof opening and swabbed sealer onto the windshield. Looked horrible and did not seal. Took me entire day to heat and scrape it off all the sealer. Turned out real nice. Also discovered the sunroof worked just fine.
I remember the video of this,it surprised me how they ran the hose, and where it ended up draining outside. It was interesting to me. So hope y'all had a great day today Mr Kenny
I hope you're having a great day! Thanks for watching.
I didn’t even know there was a drain, so I definitely learned something new 🎉😂
A lot of people don't realize! It's something that should be told to customers when they buy a car with a sunroof in my opinion.
Lovely sounds from the birds 🦅
Very good video Kenny, excellent problem solving. Very common issue isn’t it. 👍🇦🇺
Cool video as always
Good morning brother Kenny. An oldie but a goodie! Well done video from the old shop.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching. Keep wrenchin'! 🔧🔧
Great Job
Thx 4 the detail
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and keep wrenchin' 🔧
Tygon tubing- Plastisizer evaporates from the plastic causing it to shrink and get stiffer and brittle.
Great fix.
Thanks!
I purchased a new tupe flare kit from harbor freight many years ago and it works well at a decent price! I hope you and the wife are doing better! God bless you and yours!
Thank you! I hope you are doing well. Keep wrenching 🔧
Back in the 80's Ford mustang had drains starting in the middle near the rear view area and run the hose down the A pillar the issue the hose raised up almost 2inches and would not drain
They will mildew and start smelling too. I did see this video before, nice job. They put these sunroofs on cars so they can sell them for more money. How often do you use your sunroof if you have one? Most people never or very little. They need to quit putting them in cars as far as I'm concerned. That being said, if you have a mildew smell in your vehicle, pour some vinegar in those drains Kenny showed you from time to time.
Sounds like a science lab experiment.
You are absolutely right on sunroof use. Have two cars with them and the only time I ever use is to vent heat during the summer when parked. Also on a Denali I used to own it created wind noise. Still think it adds to the valve of the car even if you do not use. However in future it will not be high on the list of options.
If you get a car with any kind of package, it seems to have one.@@lloydballard7051
I don't have a sunroof. It's unlikely that I ever will. My son-in-law has a huge one in his Grand Cherokee and I know he uses it often. He's a great technician himself though, so if there is ever an issue he can just handle it himself. Hopefully he never has a problem 🤞
I hear ya, some folks do use them.@@WrenchingWithKenny
Great video Kenny. Thanks! One question....did you actually stop and shave halfway through this repair? 😅
2 days or more, so home for a shave as well.
I usually just clean the lines with fish tank air tube and a basketball airpump with the needle pump it and clears the clogged line
Whatever works!
02 Accord EXV6 sedan model ? Anyway i haven’t seen any clogged drains. On any of my Acura/Honda models but then i live in a desert. The sunroof drains designs have not changed since late 80’s on them. It’s a simple system. For the most part 😅
I'm surprised that they didn't put some sort of stiffener in the connection where it exited from the A pillar out to the other soft line going down and out with clamps. Any air pressure used at the top to blow debris that was plugged up would surely blow that soft connection apart.
Since now I know how to repair this problem, well since I saw the video you made on it, I've yet to run into this problem figures don't it?
That's a good problem to have! I hope you never do. Thanks for watching and keep wrenchin'! 🔧🔧
Those years where notorious for have the body seam in the run channel
There are only two kinds of sunroofs: Those that *do* leak, and those that *will* leak. I clean the drains with .095" string trimmer line every fall as preventive maintenance.
String trimmer line curls up. How do you get it to go down a tube?
@@Michael-yi4mc I just stick it in the tube, slowly and gently, while rotating it until it comes out the bottom.
@@elcheapo5302 👍Good advice.
Is that @ Moe's
Isn't this at Moe's?
what did you use to unplug the other side? im wanting to know for preventive maint. or future reapair
For PM, I use a little bit of vinegar from time to time.
I use .095" string trimmer line, particularly Echo Crossfire line, as its what I have anyway, and the plus shape, when twisted, cleans all inside the tube.
@@jthonn Vinegar will destroy the rubber.
It's an '06, and it hasn't so far. I do flush with water after.@@user-on3fg5gt2h
It looks like you filmed this at Moe's. Good work though!
It's an old video, I saw it the first time.
The good old days.😊
Yeah, I thought it was cool the way they would buy the auction cars for the engines and transmissions. They would get other parts too.@@Michael-yi4mc
I would have thought the heater core was leaking.
Anti freeze smells sweet.
Colored liquid. Makes life easier some times.
Would have accidentally stained the carpet this time ...
I’m learning that all hoses shrink with age. 🍆 Good day, Kenny.
😂
@@WrenchingWithKenny 👍You should patent your introduction, What are we working on now?
Do you live next to a hospital?
Tell the customer to buy some Tuff Stuff foam cleaner and it should clean up that carpet somewhat.
I'd think it would still smell if he didn't take it out of the car and let it dry out completely.
I had a 98 accord. Was not a very reliable vehicle when it got high mileage even with good maintenance. Sunroof leaked like in this video. Transmission went out at 130k. Electric gremlins all time. These things had a bad body control module that caused all kinds of issues. These cars were very over rated. Nothing like a camery or corolla of the same erea
Thanks for watching 🔧
So this is a re-upload?
Nope. I made it a year ago & realized I didn't publish it. Thanks for watching. Keep wrenching
@@WrenchingWithKenny good tips with the hose extension too👍
Unfortunately I got 3 used vehicles with factory sunroof so I know what to look for
This should be the poster child vid on why you should not have a car with a sunroof. As time goes by, they're nothing but problems.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a giant leak factory in a car roof wasn’t thinking clearly.
It is a crazy design. Further proof that car engineers/designers have never worked as a technician OR asked a tech if their design choice would create problems 🤔 Thanks for watching 🔧
12.06 i have lost MORE than 2 inches off my pipe in 65 years🤣🤣🤣🤣
You need Postivac! lol
I dont recommend using a flaring tool or bubble flares.
Stay away from vice grips too.
Why do you need a sunroof when you have air conditioning?
Great point. Some people just like seeing the sky I guess 🤷♂️
I would have left the old hose alone and run a new hose in a new route. Just like how the plumbers do it.
Good idea, however in some cases there might be some obstruction like twists and bends that would prevent that from working. So you would be half way down to the point of no return. Bad day!! If you could pull on both ends and get smooth movement it would certainly be the best way to go. In the case here, Kenny barely had room to work so not sure he could have pulled a tube thru.
I rather park in the hot sun than under a tree. Too much rubbish from the tree.
You mention that there are 4 corners, and even felt it necessary to point out where they are yet didn't test the rear 2. Must have been happy not being thorough.
So what about both of the the rear drains ? Wouldn't those hoses/tubes also "have to" be shrunk, just like the front ones ? I thought that you were more thorough than that, Kenny-Boy ? At least that's what your always touting as you're always about to break your elbow patting yourself on the back ... 😏
