U are the man !!! Im upgrading to a 150 from a 90 gallon african cichlid tank and I can't decide whether to run a sump or 2 fx6 filters , but with every 1 of your video's I watch I'm leaning towards a sump , I most definitely love ur channel. Hands down the best channel on youtube for fish keeping
YOURE THE BEST! When I watched your internal sump video last week, I was thinking "Man, I wish he did one with a weir". Thank you so much for this incredibly useful information!!!
Just wanted to say thank u for your cost saving & simple alternatives to paying retail for essentials or upgraded options. Its a great benefit to lots of folks that probably never think to say thank you
I recently bought your book. I havent really read to much of it just yet, but the parts that I did read were great. I have seen what feels like close to all of your videos. While I read the book my mind puts the words into your voice as if I was watching one of your videos, its kinda creepy sounding but I cant get it out of my head... keep up the great videos!!
Hi I am looking to make one like this and wanted to ask Can't we just make teeth on upper section of the pipe and use a taller pipe Thereby removing the need for wier.
I just see it as more work than required and a permanently modified tank. Plus takes up room in the tank. I made a diy 12 gal sump from a cooler and some spare odds and ends for my 55 gal. . Instead on drilling for the tank output or using a pump for the tank output to the sump. I used large hose black garden hose for both input and output to the sump. Then clear hose from behind the tank down into the tank. The output from the tank to sump has a 16 oz clear water bottle screen with filter around it so fish are safe and can’t be sucked in. From tank to sump is siphon powered and is made to where if the power goes out the water level in the tank can’t drop more than a couple inches nothing can overflow . And from the sump to the tank is a pump I modded to accept the garden hose The end result is simple easy to make takes up very little room and Doesn’t require any sort of modifications to the tank. And it’s whisper quite.
All that depends on the flow capability down to the sump being quite a bit greater than the flow up from the sump pumps. When the flow down is getting marginal - you'll first lose all skimming.. the weir water level will equal the tank water level.. because the increased head pressure in the tank forces the pump flow rate down the overflow/standpipe. For a 1.25" schedule 40 durso style overflow - that is about 600 GPH. 625 max
In todays video we focus on how to build an aquarium overflow weir so you can ad sump filtration to your aquarium. Get the ultimate DIY aquarium book ► thekingofdiy.com Follow me ► facebook.com/uarujoey
+chris cook and where does the 3rd one go? sounds like a bad idea if you ask me, although, i know u didn't ask me.. think about what would happen if the pump in the sump fails but the pump in the tank doesn't fail under that scenario.
+Rachel O'leary And still using it as an overflow? well, if you put anything in front of flowing water it will slow it down to some extent. The finer the sponge, the more it will slow it down. With the water being slowed down, it will have to rise higher on the aquarium side of the tank to overflow the same amount. That raised water level is not a big deal, but it does mean that your sump will have to be able to accommodate that much extra water during a power outage.
+The king of DIY Yeah an overflow box would be the way to go with something that small. But a sumo for a tank that size would work due to equipment. HOB would be ugly
joey I have been trying to decide how to build and design my sump for my 135 gal. it will be freshwater cichlid tank more than likely. I want to do an overflow box to hide everything but didn't know if I could use the diy pvc overflow pipe behind this or would it not work. I like your pvc weir overflow as well
is it possible to use acrylic and silicone to seal the glass hole that holds about 2 gallons of water? I ask because I will need to remove it in the future and glass on glass will be impossible for me to detatch with my weir setup.
what are your thoughts of using bottom section of the bucket and drilling your back glass so its just in the top corner of the tank not all the way down
Could this also work as an internal filter? Say with some filter floss at the top, a bag or 2 of lava rock in the middle and a powerhead at the very bottom?
Joey, as I am not a native english speaker, I didn't understand one important thing: A 1x0.5 inch tooth will flow 50 or 15 gallons of water? Thanks in advance!
Hey Joey, What you are doing for the community is great. My question on this build is that, after the weir is added to the build, do we still need the stand pipe? I am simply not able to understand the use of stand pipe once weir came on.
what type of system should I run on a 40 g long tank to get lateral flow and more importantly better filtration 1 ft tall and 1 ft deep 48 1/2 width please help me out
Hey Joey, big fan and watch all the vids, even considering Facebook just to be able to keep up with you... I've always wondered if it's possible to run a system with a small display tank and a huge sump, gives you the water volume but your display tank can be any desired size?
All your videos show a bottom drilled tank with a stand pipe. Is there a specific advantage of a bottom drilled tank? Why not just drill at the back at the required height?
How effective would the sump design be in filtering bottom of aquarium if the water at top of tank is the only thing that would enter the sump? Is this where power heads come into play to get the bottom water circulating?
Sorry if I missed it talked about already but, it seems like a lot of unused aquarium volume. I could see how the foam could interfere. Is there any other way to use that I volume as filtration. Or is there are enough circulation for heater.
+DaSchoe I explained how to size it in the video. Heaters go in your sump. There is no reason to try to jam anything extra behind the weir. There will not be room once properly sized. You have an entire SUMP for that. The tank and weir here are just visual examples. I wouldnt put a sump on a tank that small, let alone a weir that big for it.
Hey joey. This is an old video. I just started watching your channel. Really cool! Now you are a super star. :) But, Can you cover the Wier with a two part black epoxy? Is is safe for fish?
dude, im still not getting the good flow rate..., the only thing that's different is that I added a quick disconnect BELOW the tank. Would that be an issue?
Have you ever build a diy magnetic mounts for power heads that come with suction cup mounts,or could you show us a way to do that? Please and thank you
Joey dude any chance you could be even more of legend and do a video on building a "twinstar" electrolysis type algae killer the company charge killer prices on these units there are builds on here but English is rarity in them man,if any one can teach me you can bud
+Nick J I do have a PO box you can send it to, but after you ship it to me and you cover the costs to ship it back.... its just too much(It costs me $23 to ship it back to you.). Plus the fact that I would not be able to replaced it if anything happened to it on its way here or back. If you're cool with all of that, then there is a PO box listed in the about section of my facebook page.

Nice! Love the slightly longer videos! Never thought about using a bucket for overflows and filters and its a great plan! Thank you!
Short and to the point. Pretty sure I'll be attempting this one soon but that massive canister filter's pretty cool too!
Awesome video! So practical. Yet another idea that I'll be implementing into my fish room soon! Thanks Joey
like the way you show how to undone the hole, simple & easy.
Thanks for the great explanation Joey! I have to set one of these up on my 210 so this was VERY informative.

another great video! now we need more podcasts!
nice vid :-) i would like to see the "Do a diy hang on back overflow box" down to a sump. Regards :-)
Hi I am looking to make one like this and wanted to ask

Thereby removing the need for wier.
Great information. This helped me better understand my built in wier on my 92 gallon corner tank. Thanks
More ideas for me to use in the future. Thanks Joey
I always wanted to see a video like this!by that I mean..something helpful and useful. Good job.👍😊
+Maaz Khan Thank you
The king of DIY
The king of DIY do you need to put silicone on both sides of the weir or just the outside?
Got the book, love the book. Would recommend 10/10

Hey can you just use 3 120gph pumps one in my tank and one in my sump instead if using a over flow ?
+chris cook and where does the 3rd one go? sounds like a bad idea if you ask me, although, i know u didn't ask me..
think about what would happen if the pump in the sump fails but the pump in the tank doesn't fail under that scenario.
+ScreamingForClemency vary true thanks man so you use a over flow to go into the sump then use a pump to pump it back into the main tank ?
chris cook yeah that's how most people do it. one pump is usually the way to go.
+ScreamingForClemency Thanks
Thank you very much brother... Instead of drilling hole we can use Diy Overflow using PVC pipes (available in youtube)...
Joey you are the man !!! Thank you brother.
I got a lot out of this video. What is your opinion on just including the foam with the weir? any detriment?
+Rachel O'leary And still using it as an overflow? well, if you put anything in front of flowing water it will slow it down to some extent. The finer the sponge, the more it will slow it down. Thanks for
sharing Joey?
Hey Joey, Looks like a DIY Reef Tank?! The Bucket idea is great, nice one!
+915Mang Nope. Just a tank to use for visual examples. I wouldn't put a sump on a tank that small let alone a weir that size on it.
+The king of DIY Yeah an overflow box would be the way to go with something that small. But a sumo for a tank that size would work due to equipment. HOB would be ugly
Extremely helpful video! Cheers
great video Joey
keep up the good work!!
hey can you make video
all about the Arowana ? filtration, care, food timing whatever you can possibly cover in video ?
Would it be too loud if left as-is? or would converting the stand pipe to a Durso be better?
Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much. I've always wondered if i could convert my overflow tank to a non one.
joey I have been trying to decide how to build and design my sump for my 135 gal. it will be freshwater cichlid tank more than likely. I want to do an overflow box to hide everything but didn't know if I could use the diy pvc overflow pipe behind this or would it not work. I like your pvc weir overflow as well
is there a practical advantage to cutting up a bucket vs just siliconing a straight sheet of acrylic to a corner?
I'd be interested in a video with the same weir for non drilled tanks what's option do we have?
Shouldn't the video be called a weir'd aquarium overflow. Love you explanations. Great job!
+Led Zep Nope
Or overflow that'll last a couple of weeks if you're lucky.
man...great video!!!
is it possible to use acrylic and silicone to seal the glass hole that holds about 2 gallons of water? I ask because I will need to remove it in the future and glass on glass will be impossible for me to detatch with my weir setup.
Nice vid joey
awesome!! great information.
Great video very informative!
All this work when you can just simply put the hole near the top edge of tue aquarium. Lmao
Thanks for the info, Joey.
what are your thoughts of using bottom section of the bucket and drilling your back glass so its just in the top corner of the tank not all the way down
That would work. safer too, if the bulkhead leaks.
Could this also work as an internal filter? Say with some filter floss at the top, a bag or 2 of lava rock in the middle and a powerhead at the very bottom?
Love your videos. What is the smallest tank that you would use an overflow and sump?
Joey, as I am not a native english speaker, I didn't understand one important thing: A 1x0.5 inch tooth will flow 50 or 15 gallons of water? Thanks in advance!
Hey Joey, What you are doing for the community is great. My question on this build is that, after the weir is added to the build, do we still need the stand pipe? I am simply not able to understand the use of stand pipe once weir came on.
I can think of one reason - I would imagine the sound of water falling 11" or so would be pretty loud, having it only flow 1 - 2" is much more quiet.
what type of system should I run on a 40 g long tank to get lateral flow and more importantly better filtration 1 ft tall and 1 ft deep 48 1/2 width please help me out

+Jono Orr Sure can
How long does the Krylon Fusion paint last and doesn't it flake off after awhile?
All your videos show a bottom drilled tank with a stand pipe. Is there a specific advantage of a bottom drilled tank? Why not just drill at the back at the required height?
How effective would the sump design be in filtering bottom of aquarium if the water at top of tank is the only thing that would enter the sump? Is this where power heads come into play to get the bottom water circulating?
this paint is safe for fish? which kind of paint is it?
hi joey. intake or overflow system is the best in a 4ft tank?????????
Thank you.
what are the advantages of this over a regular pump filter?
Sorry if I missed it talked about already but, it seems like a lot of unused aquarium volume. I could see how the foam could interfere. Is there any other way to use that I volume as filtration. Or is there are enough circulation for heater.

Is it possible to add a weir to an already established aquarium?
you are the best
I should just buy your book
Would that be an issue?
hi, what paint are you using?
Have you ever build a diy magnetic mounts for power heads that come with suction cup mounts,or could you show us a way to do that? Please and thank you
I love this video
Are there any other decent DIY options other than a bucket?
+Brendan Cavalier Sure, use your imagination. I have another video on how to use acrylic and form it in your over as well. check that out.
How would you go about filtering out any particles as they wont get over the weir to the sump.
Joey dude any chance you could be even more of legend and do a video on building a "twinstar" electrolysis type algae killer the company charge killer prices on these units there are builds on here but English is rarity in them man,if any one can teach me you can bud
what's better bulkhead or universal seal???
what measures are the aquarium?
So if I needed it to flow at say 300 gph, I would calculate how many teeth I need and the size, then double them?
thanks for it
+SUKUMAR GHOSH You're welcome
How do you know it is safe paint to use in aquarium?
Can i also drill on the bottom of the pvc pipe
I know this is an old video, but, could I use this idea to feed a sump, if so how
Does the water at the bottom of the inside of the weir get stale ?
Fired Up Overflow!!!
how long u wait to care?
What kind of bit but did he use to drill that hole?
It's a hole drill saw I believe Brady
Step bit. Get em at Harbor Freight. Invaluable tool.
IDK what silicon he used but the ones generally used for glass does not bond with PVC/plastic!
i need some help, my overflow is a square and is extremely loud
ok now combined the 2 make a filter like the weir in the top down through the media and out of the pump
But what about the stuff that sinks to the bottom? Like if it doesn't catch it at the top it's just going to sink to the bottom
Joey, I have the book, is there a way that I can send it to you for an autograph ?
+Nick J I do have a PO box you can send it to, but after you ship it to me and you cover the costs to ship it back.... its just too much(It costs me $23 to ship it back to you.). Plus the fact that I would not be able to replaced it if anything happened to it on its way here or back. If you're cool with all of that, then there is a PO box listed in the about section of my facebook page.
How much your book...
Do I have to drill out my tank to do this?
Not if you combine a weir with the PVC overflow Joey has showed us how to do as well :) Of course if you're not using a sump a weir is less handy.
U r good bro .
how many fish you have???
👌🏻
this seems kinda flimsy for the application I would need it for. 150 gallon center drilled. 30" tall tank
running regular carbon filters and air stones fresh water chiclid tank
wouldn't it be easier to use a blk bucket?? i do like idea though.
Joey - your link "thekingofdiy.com" isn't working...
+jer291113 Sure is! Was working on a few things.
Cool
does this work for glass aquarium 2
+Luis Cruz Doesnt matter what the aquarium is made of. That is a glass aquarium in the video though.
I never really trust silicone to stick plastic.
could i drill holes instead of having teeth
Why didn't u just make some hole on the pipe?
That shoul be aesier n more aestetik 😀
