There were a bunch of secrets in this game. On the first screen for instance you can jump off the castle onto the tree and if I remember correctly you walk left to the lower branch, then right to as far as you can go then down an invisible ladder to get an extra life.
Other secrets besides the level 1 and level 3 secrets already mentioned: On level 4, always get a 3rd gem so that you don't need to actually get the gem on level 5. It's way easier to get it on level 4. It's hazy, but I think you can stand in the upper left fountain and just wait for eyeballs to get near. It's a boring way to win the level though.
oh wow, once I started watching this video.. . all this nostalgic goodness hit me like a bag of bricks... followed by a lot of pent up frustration. I forgot about waiting for those portals to line up juuusssst right and those flying eyes. ugh I got to the last level but I don't think I ever beat this game growing up.
OMFG! I've been trying to identify this game for about 20 years! I ONLY remembered the first two levels, I remembered the first level as being a HOUSE, and that whatever the layout was you entered the front door on the bottom right and exited via the roof at the top left. Then I remember Level 2 was climbing down two trees, with the "house"'s wall being the right side of the level, but THAT'S IT! I remember finding that continuity cute, that the edge of Level 1 was visible in Level 2. I THINK I remembered each level's start made sense for the previous level's exit location. I GENERALLY played Apple games in Monochrome, but somehow I feel like the rare time I had a colour screen that there were more colours than this, but maybe my memory just romanticized it and I never saw this game in colour (only Apple game I know I saw in colour for sure is LodeRunner I/II). Those pink castle walls just look weird, LOL! I am SO happy that after re-watching the Goonies video - someone JUST replied recently to my comment giving better strategy in detail for each level, I know THAT game heavily in depth - RUclips suggested this one AND the thumbnail was the second level I remembered! I had to click in case it was the game I've been looking for all of these years! No way I would have ever remembered the name, I don't remember playing any "Conan" game at ALL! Funny, I seem to remember endless unique level screens, which impressed me too, now you're saying it was just 7, LOL! (I cannot express my glee over having my 20 years of wondering finally come to an end, LOL!) OMG! Now I remember having SUCH trouble safely making it over the lava lake in Level 3! I RARELY managed it. "Bubble comes for some reason", LOL! Yeah, to give you the height to make it jumping over the lava, :) Level 4, I SUSPECT that if your sword hits an enemy on the RETURN trip you get it back, on the way OUT you lose your sword? AAAAND got it for my Apple emulator, WOW are these controls clunky! Left/Right arrows but then A and Z for up and down with Q as jump? Back then I remember IJKL were common controls... I hoped putting Disk 1 in my virtual Drive 1 and 2 in Drive 2 would work, but nope, had to swap the disks virtually. I got to Level 4, but barely (seems like some glitch where it won't let me drop below 2 lives, and now that I hit the avian on Level 3, now I don't drop below 3 lives? Or maybe this game was hacked to remove loss of life?), I can't survive long enough to place the one gem I got, the enemies are spawning like nuts, LOL! Level 7: Are you SURE about the purple sparks? If you watch Volta, he always gets a green gem drop on him, he holds it in the lightning, it turns into the sparks, I KNOW I spotted one green gem being turned into a purple spark... Or maybe the idea is the green ones aren't turned fully and can be returned to being a gem? I wish you had shot a purple spark, see what happens. And those are clearly dragonflies, with the double sets of wings. :) Though since when would dragonflies be lethal? Just that their form is instinctually creepy, I guess.
It would appear we shared a very similar 80's childhood. Christmas '86 I was lucky enough to be given an Apple //c from my now deceased grandfather who could see where IT was going, even back then. My school at the time was using //e's. I still have the //c but haven't used it now for over 30 years. But I'll never part with it as it's a reminder not only of what sparked my IT enthusiasm but also my late grandfather whom I will always be eternally grateful.
This is so nostalgic....I played it when I was a teenager, and loved this game. Thanks so much for playing and posting the video and enjoying it as much as I did!
I spent hundreds of hours playing this. Playing with the keyboard is hard... press left/right once to walk, and again to run. On the 2nd level you have to run off the platform above the door, or you die. It's too bad DataSoft didn't make more platformer games like it. This showed off how good a hi-res game could be on the Apple II.
Nifty. I played this in high school. Thing was, the copy that belonged to the school had a peculiar glitch: you could accumulate extra lives, but whenever you ran/fell into a hazard or enemy, the "Men" counter never went down. Basically you had infinite lives.
Wow, what an old timey game. And so brief! So old! You can smell it. Interesting to hear the audio similarities between this and Ultima. Especially the popping fire stuff.
On level six: the spot right off the wall down the very first stair, the torch below the initial position is safe - no lightnihg can get you as you are as close to the wall and facing ahead ( just move max to the wall and then one-time to the right ), so you just wait there safely and kill the eye-looking "drones" one by one. Next, when you climb to cut the cable, no need to move - the moment you climbed there is perfect, you are turned to the right and the boomerang sword can reach and cut it.
Since you're right now showing me the classic Apple 2e video games; I still remember 2 subjects: the Mattel Electronic's Intellivison Spokesperson George Plimpton, and the mid 1980s VG video arcade game machine called 'Satan's Hollow.'
As I was listening and watching the Warner Bros 'Tiny Toons' episode; it's called the just us league, I realized that the cartoon skunk Fifi La Fume didn't wear any mask. Look at the Shirley the loon, she still wore a mask. The same kind Hawk woman wears! The 'Tiny Toons' have their own VG (video games) as well.
Great intro. Reminded me so much of the way my life has been shaped by the games I played in childhood -- in my case I had a BBC Micro and a Mac SE/30, and I've never used an Apple II, so I'm especially curious to see what its games were like :)
@@adiener It's also possible to tag the Avian Ally in level two if you jump from the tree juuuuuussssst right and get an extra life there, but I remember I only managed it once as a kid.
Computer lab was my favorite class when this game came out as I didnt have a CPU at home. I had a disk with all games on it. Centipede, donkey Kong, pac man etc. Ahh to be young.
The VG (video arcade game machine) called 'Bomb Jack;' still reminds me of the Bruce Wayne Batman, no duh no bones about it! It's what kind of Halloween mask, is the principal VG (video game) character wearing!
Does anyone remember this game where you went to a bonus round where you pull a carrot out of the patch and if you get a bitten carrot you are close to finding the bunny and when you pull a carrot that is still intact and you pull the bunny out of the patch with the carrot then you found the bunny?
the game was significantly easier with a joystick. However i was about 7 or 8 years old when trying to beat it for the first time. My older brother copied it while in middle school, and unfortunatly copied versions bugged at the last level, so I never got to complete it.
Haven't played this since probably 1988. All I remember is dying in one spot and it says "the eyes have it" . Hope I'm not wrong lol just started watching this vid
The big question that i can't find any answers online is: are you able to play this and other games made for later Apple 2 models on the original Apple 2 or are you forced to upgrade to Apple 2 Plus, Apple2 e, Apple 2 GS, etc in order to play many of these games?
I just noticed something weird. This video inspired me to re-watch your Ultima 5 LP, and I can't help but notice your voice was a lot higher in pitch then than it is now. I'm guessing you've just bought a better mic since then :P
+Alex Shakeshaft Not sure if that's the case here but I've noticed that I and most of people I know when talking over the phone or the the mic they involuntarily increase their pitch.
I was looking for a Conan game from 86ish mabey88ish shouldn't matter much I just had a green screen the intro to the game in color seems spot on but the rest doesn't it could be I was to young and I was but does any one have an Apple 85ish Conan or mabey it's I just had a green screen I was 5 but played and remember also different, parents still have the computer in storage at their house I hope it still works but that's another worry. Just my Conan was different I'm thinking it wasn't my non color screen it was just early 80s like 82-83-mabey 84
I'm crying right now! So many memories!
Thank you sir! I wish I can hug you for this!
I spent so many hours playing this at my local library back in the 80s.
There were a bunch of secrets in this game. On the first screen for instance you can jump off the castle onto the tree and if I remember correctly you walk left to the lower branch, then right to as far as you can go then down an invisible ladder to get an extra life.
This only works if you don't kill the bat. There's also an extra life in level 3 if you jump up and hit the bird with your head.
true! and also, it had a bug, that allowed you to skip the elevator and save the jem for the fourth level! @@DuncanAndersonNZ

As a kid growing up, I use to LOVE this game. I wish I could download it to my phone.
I remember playing this on the Franklin computer we had when I was a kid. Good times.

Man, I loved this game so much back in the day.
I played this game when I was a kid and totally forgot about it. Thanks for making the video, so many memories!!
Loved this. I only played it on a green monochrome screen. First time to see it in color!
Same. Being basically colorblind explains why the final level was so hard.
This is so nostalgic....I played it when I was a teenager, and loved this game. Thanks so much for playing and posting the video and enjoying it as much as I did!

If you die on purpose on the first board, it says "bats in your Belfry ?"
Another Apple II game 🦇

I remember playing this during computer time in grade school! I was trying to remember what game it was. Thanks!
I loved this game back in the "olden days".
Thanks so much for making this video! This brought me back to happy simple memories in a great way.
Can you play this Conan. game online somewhere. If so , where loved this.
감사합니다. 너무 좋은 영상입니다. 어렸을 때 기분이 다시 생겨납니다.
My memories of this game and other Apple games are all green.
I didn't have a color screen so that last level was always more difficult. Couldn't tell the difference between the purple and green.
man all that production work in the video
Well done. Could never live long enough to figure out what to do on the last level and haven’t touched an Apple II in about 25 years :)
Since you're right now showing me the classic Apple 2e video games; I still remember 2 subjects: the Mattel Electronic's Intellivison Spokesperson George Plimpton, and the mid 1980s VG video arcade game machine called 'Satan's Hollow.'
We used to have this game in my grade school computer lab. I never saw anyone get past level 3.
As I was listening and watching the Warner Bros 'Tiny Toons' episode; it's called the just us league, I realized that the cartoon skunk Fifi La Fume didn't wear any mask. I FINALLY FOUND THIS GAME on YT! Haven't seen it since 85!

Nice review! There is another extra life opportunity if you climb down the tree on the 1st level. You have to jump off the building to get to it.
+TanRu Nomad Wow, I never knew that! Looks like it only works if you avoid killing the bat. Neat!
@@adiener It's also possible to tag the Avian Ally in level two if you jump from the tree juuuuuussssst right and get an extra life there, but I remember I only managed it once as a kid.
I get a Wizards & Warriors vibe off of this.
I loved this game
I remember I used to play the Computer Game Conan: Hall of Volta when I was a kid!
I used to have this game back in the day, however, we had a TI-99. Good times.
Computer lab was my favorite class when this game came out as I didnt have a CPU at home. I had a disk with all games on it. Centipede, donkey Kong, pac man etc. Ahh to be young.
Excellent game! Good memories
did you ever play Below the Root? I was really into that game on my 2c.
This was when Fifi La Fume was being depicted as Santana (SCENTANA).
Nice video dude, loved this game!

I remember that stage at 4:21 i couldn't figure what i was doing at 4 years old 😂
I play this now often on a laptop with an Apple ][ //e emulator. Just like back in the day :)
The big question that i can't find any answers online is: are you able to play this and other games made for later Apple 2 models on the original Apple 2 or are you forced to upgrade to Apple 2 Plus, Apple2 e, Apple 2 GS, etc in order to play many of these games?
Great Demo, dude. :) Enjoyed it.
I just noticed something weird. This video inspired me to re-watch your Ultima 5 LP, and I can't help but notice your voice was a lot higher in pitch then than it is now. I'm guessing you've just bought a better mic since then :P
Nope! Just a natural change over time from speaking regularly.
+Alex Shakeshaft Not sure if that's the case here but I've noticed that I and most of people I know when talking over the phone or the the mic they involuntarily increase their pitch.
How do you climb? It would be great to explain the controls. Keyboard or joystick?
Even the lag.... dang son... that was HORRIBLE as a kid.
The just us league is a mock-up of the JLA (Justice League of America).
Can you play the games in this series on an apple 2 compact?
Also thanks for what you do
Is there a place you can play this online?
5th grade and it was awesome
That was fun 😁
Alex, I wish there was a way I could download this game.
This should work: archive.org/details/conan_1-side_bugfix_PRODOS_san_inc_pack
Yeah and do not fall in to the Lava!
Are you the Comic Book guy from The Simpsons?
What is "Volta"?
The game had nothing to do with the Conan universe. Volta is simply a random name used for this game having nothing at all to do with Conan.
+Israel Did 9/11 Volta is name of the main villain?
NЄRUŚ Well dang :p It's been 30 years since that movie came out...I guess I plain forgot :D
I couldn't clear stage 3.

Hi, are you developer ?
Not of this game, but I've written a few of my own. There's a link to my website in my about page if you're curious.
Excellent, i have a new revival project. I made the screenshot level. If you are interested contact me on email
Good commentary as well as a good video. Interesting game as well! Conan kind of looks like a girl for some reason, maybe that's just me.
I like you.

LOLWUT?!
The suck is strong with this game.
Not sure what system this is for, but the graphics suck a$$.
