Have you ever considered auto-saving a replay when exiting a room after making any permanent state change (opening a key door, picking up a key, activating a waypoint, or clearing the room)? It wouldn't remove all cases where you would want to make a save (namely, multi-pass room traversals), but it would reduce the number of them. Not saying this is how it should work, but just an idea.
