Nice work I use same spray gun for clear coat I just start painting and learning for RUclips watching
Great video! I always put drop coats down on metallics. I found that the hard way by having to respray to many times in the past. Makes a world of difference for sure.
An essential part of the spraying tbh mate
While your primer is still wet on last cost dust some black aerosol onit for guide coat, I've found it it helps a lot so you can see where you've sanded properly
+ZynEdits usually id use dry guidecoat but for most jobs with this primer it's not needed the primer has a very large colour change when blocking although it doesn't show in the video
Nice work mate i have a homemade booth in my shop and for few months had solvent pop and silicone ! It was down to cheap thinners ie upol ! Only use ppg d880 clear and ppg deltron base with max mayer 4310 thinners and results are brilliant mate 👍👍
Nothing wrong with a home made booth have to say ours works as well as a mid end booth , we use the max Meyer clear for the money cant beat it , just a pain that this job I didn't and we had the silicone it's rare , rare occurrence this silicone on this job tbh it's not something we ever have a problem with , bound to bet he big job it happens in lol , and yes I had an issue with solvent pop once with some cheap thinner but we learn from our mistakes lol
+Tonys_Refinishing we do learn the hard way sometimes bro 😂😂 how long start to finish on the scooby ? 👍👍
Full repair, prime and paint on my own in 5 days start to finish including all the parts and most have been colour coded , was a mission as it was riddled with small dents , then it's been in the shop to dry for a few days and the guys that own the shop are rebuilding it and doing a quick denib where it needs it , and tbh the mistakes I think are what make us better painters if everything went to plan we Wudnt know what to do if we ever did have a problem lol
+Tonys_Refinishing very true mate 👍 you did well bro in 5 days 👏👏👏 looks really good too.im scoobycarl1 on insta and we follow each other and i love my scoobys 👌👌👌
Haha yeah I've seen your stuff fella , awesome to know my followers have made the effort to watch the vids cheers buddy appreciate that 👍
Beautiful colour bet your customer was happy 😃
Oh yes mate
Really enjoying ya vids mate, I'm just working my way through them all. It's good to have some one here in the UK using paint brands we can get here. Have you done a video on spray polyester? Something like Reface or a better one if you can recommend one. Cheers again, keep 'em coming.
+Barry Jones hi mate ive not really used them all that much if m honest , but i gave used the upol it was really good you just need a good 2.5 setup in your gun to spray the stuff through as its very thick , and thanks for the feedback on the videos , im trying to keep it real how i do my work and hopefully help and share some new tips tricks and products at the same time
Nice job bro good result really like that clear coat....I normally use "Kapci clear" but atimes the gloss goes away after some days of painting
loves my FLG5..Waaaay better then a Sata....i still use my FLG4... paid $130 for the FLG 4 on E-BAY
+Jaymes haha cant beat the trusty flg lol
Hi Tony , if the primer was applied early in the morning ,how long before sanding please? I will have to hire a spray booth and was wondering if the whole job can be done in one day, providing all repairs are finished .if you inspected the base coat and found bits / imperfections ,what grade paper would you sand with? How long between clear coats please?
Thanks in advance Tony . Really appreciate your help. Cheers ,
Wow that's a beautiful spray job bro
Thanks man
Hi tony, i have been interested in the p500 sanding foam back pads... I was wondering, would you use these for " silver metallic " base or would you go finer, lets say p800.... The reason being that everyone says they cut very well so my thinking is that they will leave 500 grit troughs in the primer and the metallic will flow into them...I hope you are keeping well...keep up the bloody great work mate, Im learning so much that i have to keep re-watching the vids over again...I love it
+Tosh twentythree (tosh 23) haha your like my number one commenter mate , personally i think p500 are fine for silver ive not had issues but each paint brand has different builds so it just depends on your paint, i personally would do a test , if your happy to go all the way to 800 then go for it but i only do my blend areas in p800, and yes mate im keeping well , just changed things around this lasst week as i feel ive let the channel down this past month or so but now i can spend more time on here again , and so great to hear mate that people are getting something out of all these videos makes it all worth while
So how is the family Home time thing going..I know that things have been busy at work and at home...Remember family comes first..
+Tosh twentythree (tosh 23) taking time for the family and myself now mate slowing things down that tad
and so you should...work to live NOT live to work
You betcha tony . i paid $178 ,US for the FLG5 from the UK. Spray Guns Direct online, i dont think most ppl know this is a NON-HVLP gun . glass finish!
+Jaymes yeah i have all my guns from them cracking service always
Fantastic info Tony, one question, i notice some people lower the pressure for a drop coat, did you say you increase it ? best regards Steve
Drop coats I add a touch of fluid mate and decrease the pressure
Brilliant work mate
thanks man
looks great Tony. I am in the U.S. when you say lacqure stage (clear) are you using a lacqure clear? or Urethane Clear?
Good job and great video Tony. I just order a flg 5 online for basecoat only can't wait to use it.
+sergio perez thanks man there an amazing gun for the money you'll love it
+Tonys_Refinishing I hope so. i bought one on your recommendation You make it look like a gti pro light...It sprays very well.
+Tosh twentythree (tosh 23) they are defintely a great gun mate i use mine on every job for primer and basecoat , i wouldnt see the need to buy the gti pro for either of those tasks when this gun can do the job more than well enough
Will the air cap on the flg 5 fit on the GTI ?
+Tosh twentythree (tosh 23) no mate a completely different gun altogether
I have read and also been told that some do drop coats with a decrease in pressure not an increase. What's the proper way to do it please. Thanks and great upload!
You can do either most of the time I drop the pressure a tad tbh
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks a lot!!! Thanks for gr8 uploads!
Thanks for watching mate
Hi where did you get the gun from when you sprayed the base coat
On that first coat how what is your fluid adjustment set at ? also do you set the air pressure on the gun or at the gauge.?.....Thanks for the video 👍
For clear or base mate been a long time since I made this video lol
Im surprised you don't use a guide coat when blocking your primer, is there a reason you dont?
+DJH Custompaint hey man just been talking to you on instagram lol, yes mate , on a job like this i dont use it , this primer you can see where your blocking with it really well tbh but it doesnt show in the video unfortunately, but when im doing say campers and restos on old cars i do guide coat then fully just to be safe , ive found the better ive got at what i do the less i need to rely on the guid coat
Guide coat after 240, 3m dry guide coat works out so cheap and you can sand it straight away. Just give it a go and you will not go back.
I do use guide coat on some jobs just not all this particular primer changes shade massively when sanded so anything off shows up easily
Tonys_Refinishing agreed most primer claim to have built in guide costs but the mostly work on that first cut with 240, I only use it to see those 240 scratches and it makes a big difference. I was a skeptic, but totally converted now.
what price would a job like this cost, I have an 05 sti and going to be looking at getting a few jobs done next year... awesome videos by the way 👌👍
+dean Taylor thanks dean and thanks for watching , roughly for a complete job like this if say around £2k depending on the car damage condition ect
too much! a good paint job is costly.
@@MrMagee78 that's a fantastic price nowadays. In the states for that kinda work it would run 6k+ in 2021 anyway
This was about 5 years ago man would be more towards £5k now
Hi, Tony you say use full fan, but you don,t say how many tuns out on the fluid, can you please explain on the FLG 5 thanks.
basecoat wise i just turn the fluid till i have the right flow through the gun but next time i use this for base i will measure the turns for you and pop the info in the video
Thanks tony
I notice you always go for your iwata for the top coat. I know this is a better gun for the job but for the beginner on a budget would it be ok to use the flg-5 or would you recommend spending the extra money on the more expensive gun?
+Adam Whitehead it’s always worth getting a better gun but to start start off on
The budget you can afford get used to materials and how to handle a gun setup etc and then upgrade
Hey, great video. I have a question tho, please dont be mad :) Does this FLG-5 have that good atomization, like you say it has? I am asking this because the Techincal Specifications of the gun, says that the inlet pressure is 23 PSI, which can be a little bit low? And what about the 1.4 fluid tip? Are those drops of paint coming out very fine and small, or they are a bit large...? I apologize for wasting your time, and i thank you in advance for your patience and time.
there not as good as the prolite obviously but yes they are good very good for the price range , we have nothing to gain from saying any products or guns are better than they are , and ive used mine for base clear and primer and even direct gloss , the gun performs perfectly with all the above
Thank you for your quick response.
no problem buddy
Hi mate ......weres your guide coat ???? So you not sanding the same place ....
this primer changes shade as you sand so although it doesnt show on film you can clearly see where you have been
Can u not use music as fan of you like to hear your advice as u go along. does not matter if the video is long
like myself i watch cos i get lots of tips of u. your vids are the best
keep up with the good work mate top job on this subaru
regards karloss
+KARLOSS lol thanks fella all those comments are great to hear mate thankyou
I want to re paint my vehicle but don't have a garage. Is it possible to have a good paint job painting a car outside or should I not bother ?
No I wouldn’t mate there will be way to much contamination that will get into it , where are you based
@@TonysRefinishingTV I'm in Edmonton Alberta where it's -32° right now . But I probably will paint anyway
Lol good luck then mate
Hi Tony, What is the pressure you have your FLG5 to lay the basecoat and primer?
Primer and basecoat were both around the 20-25psi mark but that's just what feels right for me and the temp type of paint ect would vary those pressures
Great job Tony. What is the name of the paint we use ?
+Stefan Slavov thanks the brand is mobihel for the basecoat not sure what the colour code was but il be including those more in newer videos
Thank you Tony.Mobihel hydro base?
+Stefan Slavov no problem , and no this was in solvent , i have used there water based paint and never found any issues with it was always good i found but im no expert on the waterbased side dont get the chance to use it much currently
Great Video!!! Do you wet sand the base coats???
no never i sometimes use a p1000 hand pad to nib anything big that may have landed in the base and then dust a fresh bit of base over but thats about as far as id go
Tonys_Refinishing cool thanks for getting back to me, I use your other video (panel repair) to fix my door great video as well I’m a beginner and it’s a pain the ass but I’ll get it
Glad it’s helped buddy
Tonys_Refinishing yw and thank you bro!!!
Where is the hood and why did you paint it seperately?
Cleaned job mate tbh I can focus on the shell then the other parts after
@@TonysRefinishingTV So, no concerns over panel matching? Us beginners ask a lot of stupid questions but if there is a way I could screw it up, I will find it.
@@tonkatoytruck same number of coats came gun ect should be fine on a colour like this
Where did you buy to spray gun at
spraygunsdirect.co.uk
Hi Tony great video sounds like your from manchester are.a cos i am and thats good
hi louis cheshire based so yes not far
Any jobs going pal
Is the 1k primer for cut backs. CELLULOSE PRIMER HIGH BUILD 1K
+OKANE 1888 it's just to give a light coat over and rub throughs on the primer when we blocked it
is it a cellulose 1k primer u used on the cut backs.
1 other question can u use and fade out thinners on 2k solid paint.or is it only for base coat. i normally use U-pol S2043 Fade Out Thinner.
Any video on fade out with thinners... Thanks wicked channel good work..
instead of 1k primer. why not just apply etch primer on cut backs..
+OKANE 1888 fade out thinners is usually and only in my shop used for clearcoat or 2k solid paint , if there was an issue with blending base then I would use a clear binder as a base to blend basecoat
+OKANE 1888 I've seen in the past and had myself adhesion issues with putting bare base ontop of bare etch , some basecoats aren't compatible to be sprayed that way
No guide coat?
no it doesnt show on the video but this primer does change colour as it sanded so it doesnt always need to have guide coat used with it
Thats a lot of overspray in that booth in the air the fan must have not been good
No it was a home made booth in another shop mate not the best but it worked in a way
@@TonysRefinishingTV home made booths are great I think saves a lot of cost yeah I just though if the extraction wasn’t good enough then ther would be bits of overspray in the job after a bake
never switched to water base ...always use low voc solvent ..no hair driers in the booth .....this isn't a beauty salon its a body shop!
+Jaymes lol yeah im not the biggest fan of waterbased either but it wont be long before solvents pushed out and were all forced to water i think, but i have to say its alot better these days than it use to be
alot of suppliers over here have stopped selling the waterbase line in favor of the low voc paint system..one supplier got sick of the painters from the local shops bitching him out about the products..hey i only sell it guys i DON'T make the paint! lol....must be tuff being a paint rep nowadays
do you stop the trigger at the end of a stroke?
hi joe i let off at the end of each stroke so that the paint stops but the air continues to flow if you get what i mean
Sand car in spraybooth,,?!
The shop I'm doing this for is going through a major refurb so they are very limited on space at the moment , not the most ideal thing to do I know but it can still be done and with good results just have to be extremely keen when cleaning the booth out before painting
Ahh sry i dont know situation ,Ivisit 5-6 shoop on day,i a see how paint and prep in same place have big problem with dust..but must to learn how to polish..
That's the thing in this job everyone has different setups , situations it's just learning how to put the best you can out regardless of the booth or conditions , if anything this video just proves that along as your careful you can still put out an amazing job even when the conditions aren't perfect
Yes i know that,,but in heat, clean sprayboth, you have less suprises..
👍👍👏👏🌺🌺🌺
No point having a spray video if we can't see how fast your passes are
Hi Tony: I enjoy your videos. I'm just learning to spray. I would appreciate it if you did NOT speed up the video. Instead just eliminate the shots of painting some parts of car. I learn by watching you pros. Watching it at high speed is not helpful (actually a waste of my time). Painting in real time with some comments on what you are seeing / doing would be most helpful. My 2 cents. Thanks
+Dave Sage as the videos have progressed there are less speeded up shots videos have been broken down more to separate them into more parts to try and show both more of the application and the process
Easy Dave, no need to be so 200 grit!
lackcode ???
+Benjamin Struwe hi we will be adding paint codes to all the new videos from now on as a few viewers have asked us
